Clint Mansell, composer of such classic motion picture scores as 'The Fountain' and 'Requiem For a Dream' dropped the news that he is writing the musical score for the last chapter in BioWare's epic Mass Effect trilogy in an interview with The Quietus about his latest film, 'Black Swan'.

The website Badass Digest picked up on the news of Mansell's involvement in Mass Effect 3, which saw the composer asked about whether he does much work for other outlets like computer games. Mansell responded by saying: "I'm doing a video game this year actually. Mass Effect 3".

When describing what it's like to score a video game, Mansell said: "As I was saying about Public Enemy and re-working old hip-hop tunes for Requiem, and kind of re-working old ballet tunes for Black Swan, with something like Mass Effect you're more like a DJ, with all these elements. You've got the holding pattern, then the big explosion where you need the score to kick in. Then you need to take it off on a tangent. You've got all these different elements that change depending on what the player does. You have to figure out an overall symphony, but be able to break it down into component parts. You can bring the pain when required".

This is incredible news as Mansell is regarded by many as one of the most gifted composers working in the film industry today. His music is famous for being as epic as it is haunting. His involvement in Mass Effect 3 gives us good reason to believe we might be in for the most emotionally devastating game in BioWare's space opera franchise yet.

Thanks to Lifejumper, reposted from the ME2 thread. Clint Mansell is amazing, feel kinda bad for Jack Wall and Co. getting the shaft though.

This is seriously fucking amazing. He's one of my favourite composers. Goddamn this is going to be fantastic.

I'll just nick what I posted in the other thread.

I'm not too sure what to make of this as I'm not particulary familiar with his work, but Jack Wall and others have done a good job with the series so far so I'm sad to see that end. Still, if it's more like Mass Effect's soundtrack, I'll no doubt be happy.

Perhaps it could be a collaboration effort?

Oh wow, thats huge news.

I'm sad to see Jack Wall go but I didn't think 2's OST was as good as 1's. There were a few choice tracks on there though. Hhhhmmm, love Clint and it will be interesting to see what he does.

Kinda torn on this news.

!!

Moon = most underrated soundtrack of 2009. Listening to Welcome to Lunar Industries in celebration right now.

I just creamed my pants. Clint's work is the shit, I listen to one or more of his soundtracks a week, if not a day. Requiem and The Fountain soundtracks got me through college.

Edit: In honor of this momentous occasion Im gonna go watch Moon for the 100th time and hope ME3 has some massive emotional scenes where Clint can make some sorrowful magic.

Sample it, loop it, fuck it, eat it... and spit it out (out out out out)

I'm so glad people finally love you, Clint.

Awesome. I love his soundtracks. This just makes me think of the incredible soundtrack to Moon. :D

Emotionally devastating? Oh, games journalism.
Yes, ME1 and 2 really set the bar high there. I love the games and I'm excited for the third one, but "emotionally devastating" is one of the last phrases I would ever attribute to the series so far.

Wow, that's unexpected. I'm intrigued.

I LOVE the first Mass Effect soundtrack, but was less impressed by the second. There weren't as many epic themes, just songs that felt like "gameplay background" music. Hope we get back to that epic feel.

Goddman. Mansell scoring.

If this doesn't come with an OST I'm going to strangle everyone at BioWare. Hundreds of corpses will be left in my wake.

This may change the feel of the game. The previous composers did a good job and ME has established an actual theme and "sound".

I'll reserve my judgment until I hear some tracks from the ME3, but I am optimistic.

He wasnt talking about the ME series but ME series plus Clint Mansell who is a master as creating extremely emotional and sorrowful soundtracks that just move you like no other. It would stand to reason that they hired Clint because of this talent and that there will be some rather dramatic and heavy shit occurring in ME3

It better be good, he's got his work cut out for him. ME1 (Noveria in particular) is the best game soundtrack of all time.
Hahah, this guy pisses on the best soundtracks of all time from high atop Bad Motherfucker Peak. It's not even a question as to whether or not he'll bring it.

I really don't know how I could have been any more excited for Mass Effect 3, but this certainly seals the deal.

fuck, i want jack wall back! :(

Bioware hit the big time, they don't need no stinking video game composers.
Bring back the synth of the first game, Clint, and all is forgiven. I can't remember a single song from Mass Effect 2 bar the main theme.

I just hope it's more ME1 and less ME2 (Mordin/Tali/Legion theme being the exceptions).

More importantly, Faunts for credits again.

I can only assume those who are skeptical have not heard Mansell's work. The Fountain's score is easily one of the best film scores of all time, and his work on Moon was phenominal.
