Clint Mansell to Score Mass Effect 3

I can only assume those who are skeptical have not heard Mansell's work. The Fountain's score is easily one of the best film scores of all time, and his work on Moon was phenominal.
He was also the creative lead/frontman of a fucking amazing band Pop Will Eat Itself from 86-94, too. He has been unbelievably awesome for at least 25 years.

Now that i think about it, i'm inclined to believe that Jack Wall and the other composers will still have work on ME3. Scoring a videogame is a massive undertaking. Hell, Hans Zimmer didn't even score the entirety of MW2, there were about two other composers with him for the project.

I'm going to be the divisive voice and say that this worries me.

To me, the sound of Mass Effect is closer to Vangelis than a classical orchestra sound. Mansell, as talented as he is, doesn't really evoke Vangelis to me.

While Suicide Mission is a great song, it didn't fit the feel of the series to me.

Maybe, though, Mass Effect just isn't what I thought it was.

I fully acknowledge that Mansell could do a crazy wonderful job, though. Just that I hope he turns more towards synth sounds than actual instruments.

That's laying it on a little thick, don't you think?

Edit: Ok I read "THE BEST". Either I'm going blind or you just stealth edited me.

So... Mansell - Main themes, cutscenes and all that.

Wall - secondary themes (battle, exploration, that sort of stuff?)

I'm in for that :)

moon has one of the best, most underrated soundtracks in forever. love the main theme so much. this is crazy news.

dude is like the king of broody/ambient music pieces.

Holy shit, he did Moon? VERY EXCITED NOW.

No stealth edit, but I genuinely believe it is one of the best.

Hahah, this guy pisses on the best soundtracks of all time from high atop Bad Motherfucker Peak. It's not even a question as to whether or not he'll bring it.

lol, fanboy much?

Let's see him do a game soundtrack then we can judge.

Hope he doesn't change the feel from the previous games too much. Harry Gregson-Williams did a nice job expanding the MGS themes from what the Konami Sound Team did in MGS1. i shall have hope for this transition.

It's not as bad as Infinity Ward hiring Hans Zimmer just because they could, I suppose. If Wall remains part of the team I wouldn't be as cynical.

Awesome news!!! I'll get the OST for sure.
Mansell's Requiem for a Dream score had a huge influence on my work.. his along with Reznor's music in fact. Too bad the guy scored Doom :P

TubeDubbed

The most overused track in history has come home!

I hope he can take some cues from Vigil and The Wards. ME2's soundtrack fell a little flat on me because I didn't get as many memorable pieces.

Exploring the Wards is my favorite track in the series.

lol, lol much? Mansell is an elite level composer. Even pretending that he might not be able to "handle" doing a game soundtrack, even though he's been knocking it out of the park for years in film, and in the music industry before that, is bad comedy.

I have the same reaction I have whenever I hear any hollywood composer is doing a video game.

It's probably a very good installment in a list of things I don't like. I liked ME1's soundtrack more than 2's specifically because it didn't sound like a hollywood soundtrack.

Fair enough. I've seen Fountain and Requiem, but I can't remember a single track from either, besides req's main theme and that's only because it was in LotR trailers and a Lil John song lol.

I'm checking out some of his stuff right now.

ME2 OST was way worse than first one, very forgettable, this should be good.

See, I thought it was weaker but in no way forgettable. I get a different sort of intensity from Wall's work on 2, like with Tali's theme and the Suicide Mission song, which worked well for the theme of the game. The first ME had to set the tone of the universe but you still get a bit of that synth in ME2.

I always get a smile on my face when I listen to the Normandy Reborn track(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXCM0lZxh4U), such an awesome overlay for a great scene.

Is that because it tried to be too commercial? It feels like ME1 had a bit more freedom with the music, I hope ME3's music doesn't become too movie-like.

Jack Wall is the shit. I dunno how I feel about this.

Jack Wall is a competent videogame composer (his fuckawesome ME1 score is far beyond the rest of his work). Mansell is a fucking musical genius.

Normally I'd agree, but Mansell just knocks it out of the park with everything he does. His scores don't sound like silly big 'Hollywood' scores.

I'm very, very confident this will lead to nothing but amazing things.

I'm surprised that there are people that didn't like ME2's soundtrack. I'll be honest, i found the first game's score to be completely forgettable. I don't remember much about it.

I'll go ahead and be contrary. I want Jack Wall and Sam Hulick back.

ME2 music was so-so, but ME music was one of the defining elements of that game. It was basically perfect.

Movie composers slumming it up on game soundtracks has been pretty hit or miss IMO.

Well there is no love between us anymore....

Loved his work with Kronos Quartet for the requiem soundtrack and now I have another reason besides Natalie Portman to check out Black Swan

I agree with this. And I love this Clint guy. HOW CAN I RECONCILE THIS APPARENT CONFLICT OF INTEREST

I found the ME2 soundtrack trying too hard to channel the classic blockbuster action movie sound.

While ME1 was definitely aping something (the sound of sci-fi from the '70s and '80s and especially Vangelis) it did a good job of allowing one to identify its source while also sounding totally different while fitting the world.

There's a reason I bought the ME1 soundtrack but can't bring to mind a single tune from ME2.

When Mansell is on he's on and among the best there is, but when he doesn't give a shit (a lot of the for-hire stuff) you can tell and it's pretty underwhelming (see: Doom).

I have no clue how this is going to turn out, so I guess the best I can do is be cautiously optimistic.

ME2's score was so fucking derivative and bland. Could accompany any forgettable summer blockbuster. ME1's score is also derivative, but its specifically derivative of Vangelis and is so fucking evokative and so fucking incredible and unforgettable.

oh wow, easily the most exciting thing I know about ME3 right now. like, heart-rate increasing exciting.

Jack Wall is amazing, and hopefully he doesn't get completely shafted. Clint Mansell is amazing though. Requiem for a Dream and The Fountain had amazing music.
