Cloud announced for Smash Bros

Why? A Nintendo fighting game featuring Nintendo characters on Nintendo consoles...why wouldn't people have a problem with the PS1's biggest poster boy in the game? Personally, I think it's completely ridiculous and degrades the integrity of the series.

Integrity is important in a cartoon fighting game roster.

I hope they don't go the Marth/Roy route and actually dub Cloud in English

I know it's different with Cloud having an established English VA for years now, but I can't help but be worried.

Why do people like that character? I really don't get it.
because he's all about that thug life

1) He was in 2 good DKC games
2) DK doesn't have a villain rep in Smash

That's about it.
Also if they focused on the blunderbuss from DKC2 (easily his best appearance) he'd be a heavy-type character focused more on projectiles which could be neat. Plus, a fourth-wall breaking FS where he summons fake Smash Bros. credits while he plays dead would easily be one of the coolest move ideas.

I guess if you look at the whole Mario universe, K. Rool is the second biggest baddie of the games.

Which is interesting, because the character is not that consistent. He's a king for most games, but for others he's a pirate or an engineer.

The older Rare games played up the idea he kept resorting to different persona's from game to game to avoid dealing with his constant failures, which I think is a pretty neat idea for a platforming villain.

DK64 kinda muddles it by having the boxer trope only come into play during the final boss fight, and then after Rare left Nintendo always just fell back on him being a king again for his cameos.

Yeah guys K Rool is a total nobody, noone in Japan wants him, and his various appearances would lead to a boring moveset.

I guess ill take Gonzo's place in defending him now. Just like how i rooted for Pac-Man to be in Smash while everyone around me said otherwise.

I think the main reason people hate K Rool is because he has obnoxious fans; as a character design he's not particularly offensive beyond Rare's usual hideous 3D rendering style.

There are people who think the Rare Killer Instinct designs are better than the Double Helix/Iron Galaxy ones; I think those people are on serious drugs.

You talk like EVERYONE has a villain rep in smash !
Right now on smash 4 there are just TWO franchises with villain reps, Mario and Zelda.
3 if you count Dedede or Meta Knight as villains...and that is stretching a LOT

Not even Fire "oh god not another character from" Emblem or Pokemon have villains.

So do people just forget like every game studio's attempt at 3D renders during the 90's were fucking terrible or does Rare only exclusively get shit for theirs because they were way more popular?

K Rool is going to be announced next month and he's going to be great.

Pokemon has Mewtwo
Kid Icarus has Dark Pit
Star Fox will have Wolf

Donkey Kong is a big enough franchise to deserve three reps. K Rool fits right in. Ideally, every franchise would have a playable villain, provided they aren't too big or something.

Street Fighter and Final Fantasy are some of my favorite series ever. That's probably why I'm excited for Ryu and Cloud. All we need is Bayonetta and/or Wonder Red, a Castlevania character, and Phoenix Wright and you're looking at the best roster of any fighting game ever.

k. rool was a boxer for 10 minutes in DK64 so expect his down B to just be Mac's counter

can never have enough counters in smash bros.

Sakurai is very aware of everything surrounding Ridley and has played into it in the past. I think over the years Ridley is the most demanded first party character that still isn't in the game. I know there's a contingent that want K Rool (and I wouldn't mind him) but I really do have a feeling that Sakurai finally might let Ridley be playable in this series.

Story-wise that's not the real Ridley in Pyrosphere so disregarding the other occasional times Smash fumbles with plot points of particular characters maybe that's how they'd explain away Ridley being both playable and a boss.

I don't remotely expect him to be DLC either way.

Probably unlikely as it would involve having a character that's also represented by a larger version of itself as a stage hazard.

I don't know if Wolf will come back. It's clear Samurai doesn't care if a series has villian rep or he would have included them already. He's looking for characters that people will pay for DLC, and not just the hardcore, but the casual fans as well.

I want Kraid over Ridley. The Smash community's collective meltdown would be the greatest thing ever.

Well in all fairness isn't Roy a bit of a hard sell to the casuals?

Anti-Heroes or neutral. These aren't villains. There's only Bowser, Ganondorf, and The Koopalings as actual evil characters.

they're close enough

mewtwo is as evil as a pokemon can get. he was pretty evil in that first movie.

dark pit is an evil pit. hades would be a cool playable character I guess.

and wolf is definitely a villain. andross ain't happening.

we got roy back

I think it's clear that, slowly, we'll get everyone from melee/brawl back. I fully expect wolf and pichu to make a return.

Mewtwo's not really evil in the games so much as it's angry and uncontrollable. X and Y imply it was mistreated and just wants to be left alone. It does function as an antagonist though, especially in Pokemon Stadium where it's the final boss.

The most evil Pokemon in the games is Darkrai in the Mystery Dungeon games. Speaking of which, Darkrai would be pretty sweet, though probably broken with his emphasis on putting foes to sleep.

Not at all...

I'd also like to point out that you can currently play Donkey Kong on a stage that features a Donkey Kong stage hazard (75M).

Magus from Chrono Trigger? He does some pretty awful stuff.

I think he only has a body count of one, though. He ruled the monsters out of necessity, not because he agreed with them. All he wanted to do was summon Lavos so he could fight him, but he was woefully underpowered and unprepared.

Smash seems to make a point of its DK not being the original DK moreso than other post-Rare games do, but that's not particularly 'off' either.

... Duck Hunt Dog's a stage hazard and he's playable too. :Y

Right, so one again this is just a made up "rule" that isn't even true.

"Ridley" being on Pyrosphere doesn't stop Ridley from being a playable character.

Even if he led the mystics out of necessity, he led a war that killed some number of soldiers. When you get to the boss fight on the bridge, there are soldiers being stabbed by skeletons IIRC. Plus, he presumably allow his troops to devour people. I don't think he can be held blameless for that solely due to circumstance.

It was either that, or he would get killed. The game goes out of the way to try and remove as much blame as possible from him.

Ike also lead an army that killed a ton of people.

So did Marth!
