I don't know why people liked Mewtwo in the first movie. He was rather forgettable in the end.
It was totally new at the time to have a legitimate antagonist Pokemon. And unlike future movies, Mewtwo drives the conflict of the film because he wants it, not because of some misunderstanding. It makes him feel more credible as a villain.

Plus his voice is imposing and Mewtwo was literally the best Pokemon in the original games.

I thought that gamexplain's cloud trailer analisis was pretty bad. I say that because, not only did they talk way to much, they also assigned multiple moves to the wrong input (that's an assumption, sure, but it seemed pretty obvious to me :p).

GimR's analisis on the other hand... it's short (6 minutes if you skip the first 50 seconds, which aren't about the analisis), concise and extremely informative!! Ignoring the long intro, that analisis respects your time way more than other analisis that people have posted (while containing way more info).

Anyway, the video: https://youtube.com/watch?v=R-PtKZCjkQo

(a cloud analisis may be old news, but the video is good)

Yeah this analysis is much better, although Gamexplain's is probably better for people not into competitive smash since they won't care about frame data.

So I've been thinking a bit more about what Cloud means for Smash, and I starting thinking about what the music for Midgar might be. We got the normal battle theme, the boss theme, the opening theme, and the victory theme, none of them remixed as far as I know. For Ryu we got Ryu's theme, Ken's theme, and remixes of both so I'm not expecting too much, but I really hope we get some cool remixes of some FFVII music.

Also, let's get the AC version of One Winged Angel. Come on, the costume got in so it shouldn't be too tough to get the song as well.

Quote from Namura and Kojima interview with IGN E3 2006
This lead to talk about collaborations, which of course, lead to talk of Solid Snake's appearance in the Wii version of Smash Brothers: "That was very surprising," said Nomura. "Cloud won't make an appearance?" asked Kojima. "We didn't get an offer," responded Nomura with a laugh.

Guys, Mewtwo in smash is clearly based off the anime movie, in which he is a clear bad guy until the end. In the japanese version he even has spoken dialogue.

Apparently the evil laugh, dark energy, and literally being in an event that featured only villains isn't enough to consider Mewtwo a villain in Smash lol

Mewtwo is 100% considered a villain in Smash Bros.

Nobody said anything about manufactured hype? I said this generated hype- as in it got people hyped, and it did. I'm expressing my disappointment in the inclusion of a middling character in a great franchise littered with characters I'd prefer. Unless you'd prefer I just ballwash Cloud?

Ah, fair enough, you used generated as verb, not adjective. Your original post read to me like "(I despise) this (artificially) generated hype" instead of "this (has undeservedly) generated hype", my bad. I'm guessing others might have read it that way too and that is why they replied harshy too. Again, sorry for the confusion.

His Limit Break upsmash seems to trigger a Little Mac style OHKO. I thought at first it'd be a reference to an eject attack (some kind of whirlwind that removes players/enemies from the battle), but later found there are no such wind moves in FFVII (though I'm fairly certain there are in other games).

Now I'm wondering if that effect is in game or just trailer editing. Hmm.

Also, I think GameExplains analysis is more accurate than Gimr's. They make some very good observations relating to Braver, which I think are going to be relevant.

Also why has no one assumed that Cross Slash will be a multi input attack like Marth's side-B? It looks like something you'll be able to trigger the extra hits for yourself (side-B-B-B-B).

Just curious. Isn't Mewtwo kinda a different character in the JP version of the anime movie?

Very much so. 4kids thought either the stakes in the movie weren't high enough or American kids wouldn't be able to "handle" an ambiguous and sympathetic antagonist, so they made Mewtwo a lot more villainous and hammy.

You can read all about the differences between the versions here if you're interested.

Mew is too. Instead of being pro-life, he promotes genocide of the clones.

Hooray!
That is a fandom myth.

Whenever people talk about the differences between the Japanese version and the English dub, one of the things that's brought up quite often is this exchange:

Meowth: "Mew's got a good point."
Jessie: "What's it saying?"
Meowth: "Mew says you don't prove anythin' by showin' off a lot of special powers and that a Pokémon's real strength comes from da heart."

The rumor goes that in the Japanese version, Mew states that unnatural life - clones, basically - are inferior to the real things and must therefore perish. And that 4Kids mistranslated all that and changed it to the "real strength comes from the heart" thing instead to cover up Mew's desire to see other pokemon die.

The thing is...all of this is just made-up nonsense. Here's what's actually said in the Japanese version of this scene:

Japanese Dialogue
Japanese Dialogue Translated
Nyasu
Nyaruhodo Nya
にゃるほどニャ
"Oh, I see nya."
Musashi
Nan datte?
何だって?
"What is it?"
Nyasu
"Honmono wa honmono da. Waza nado tsukawazu karada to karada de butsukareba honmono wa kopii ni makenai"...to itteru nya.
「本物は本物だ。わざなど使わず体と体でぶつかれば本物はコピーに負けない」...といってるニャ
"It's saying "The originals are the real things. They won't lose to the copies if it comes down to a fight in which neither side uses any of their special powers"...nya."

With the famous "Ash's Butterfree dies in the Japanese version" rumor, it seems that someone misheard the word shison ("offspring") as shisou ("injuries and death") and went from there. But for Mewtwo Strikes Back? I have absolutely no idea what was misinterpreted in these lines to come up with the whole "Mew thinks the clones should perish" bull. Was there a shitty fansub out there that claimed that this is what was being said? Did someone mis-remember who said what and when? Did someone just pull this out of their ass? Or was this all some weird combination of all these things?

Whatever the case may be, rest assured that Mew is not the dick in the Japanese version that some claim it is.

I'd like for Nomura's art (if they make it, I don't see why not) for the Smash poster is more in the Style of TWEWY although it wouldn't make sense lol

Does Sony have any hold on FF7? People keep saying it's a Sony game, saw someone compare the situation to Banjo getting into Smash. It is on PC, which makes it a bit weird that it's never been ported elsewhere, I guess.

They had a hand in the Western translation of the game, and they published it outside of Japan. So yes, it does have slight Sony parentage. Whether or not it's still relevant, or precludes a release of the original game on Nintendo or MS platforms, I have no idea.

Smash events references LOTS of non smash bros stuff.

mewtwo is still just a pokemon species =P

Man, what if the whole point of this character is just Sakurai rubbing it in Sony's face that they'll never top Smash, hahaha

Don't forget that there was some sort of "legal issue" about getting Snake into PSASBR. It was never elaborated on, but it sounded to me like there may have been some non-compete section in the deal to put Snake in Brawl, keeping him out of similar crossover games. Not only is Cloud "rubbing it in Sony's face," but if they're really working on a Power Stone-inspired PSASBR 2, this would mean that they couldn't get Cloud, even if Square wanted them to.

I don't know if that's hilarious, or a dick move on Nintendo's part. At least PSASBR can still get Lightning.

I would say it's Nintendo killing PSASBR2 before it's even out, but Sony has done a spectacular job of that already.

Mewtwo is bad until the end? Did we watch the same movies

Damn Nintendo is pure evil

I never heard this before. I don't believe tgis to be true. Sound like bullshit.

Samurai has personally insulted the Nintendo fan community, and more importantly me, by announcing Cloud as a playable Smash Bros character. It is clear evidence of his incompetence that he has wasted a slot on this generic anime emo character that no one even knows about instead of ones that are more important to Nintendo history. Superior characters like Geno, Foreman Spike, or Tayce T.

Heed my words, Nintendo. If you do not cancel the release of Cloud by next week, I will only buy one copy of every Zelda game in the future. I will also cease my production of Reggie Fils-Aime yaoi doujins. You have been warned.

(I had the strange urge to type this. I don't know why.)

Why are we talking about PSABR2 when there likely won't be another, at least for quite some time? I doubt this move had anything to do with that franchise since Sony couldn't even get Crash into that game. This is more like Smash getting a FF rep since FF was pretty big on Nintendo consoles back in the day and even now in some cases. They happened to get the fan favorite FF character, regardless of his credentials on Nintendo platforms, he's the face of FF for many so he's in Smash. Good job Sakurai.

I never heard this before. I don't believe tgis to be true. Sound like bullshit.

It is bullshit. Seems kind of childish to speculate some war over 3rd party characters. PSABR probably didn't even have half the budget of Smash 4.

To think that Sakurai spent his time making decisions on this game and adding 3rd party characters to spite a last gen party brawler whose developers were cut loose is silly.

He's pretty great in the breakout scene.

But otherwise, he's just kinda a mope.

"WAAAAH HUMANS ARE BAD AND ABUSE POKEMON BECAUSE GIOVANNI MANIPULATED ME SO I'M GONNA KILL ALL THE HUMANS AND ALL THE POKEMON BESIDES MY OWN OH WAIT ONE HUMAN DID SOMETHING GOOD I GUESS HUMANS AREN'T SO BAD"

Cloud my dude and all but I kinda agree that his inclusion wasn't necessary, especially when there are still other Nintendo characters with clout that either should have been shoe ins or are more deserving, especially for franchises that have very little representation like Earthbound, F Zero and Metroid. Had Sakurai covered these bases properly, then I'd have looked at Cloud as "icing on the cake" since at that point everyone who absolutely deserves a spot would be in and the underwhelming representation for certain franchises was taken care of.

Had he done THAT, then I'd like to think people here would be more excited to have him aboard
especially for franchises that have very little representation like Earthbound
A series with 3 games in total that has 2 playable characters, that's like 66,7% representation! Probably the highest percentage amount in the entire game.

We're over 55 characters. Nearly every important(to sakurai) Nintendo character is in at this point so some branching out isn't too outlandish.

I think a lot of people are very, very excited to have Cloud in the game, as evidenced by the internet reaction to his announcement.

That said, I will say that for future Smash Bros. games your dreams may become a reality.

F-Zero and EarthBound are my favorite Nintendo franchises, and I think they are very well represented as of now, character-wise. I'd love to Porky, or Kumatora, but I think for the Mother series 2 characters is good enough already.

F-Zero DEFINITELY needs more representation in the form of music or stages though, its only new original song for this game was YET another remix of Mute City. Captain Falcon as a character represents the series by himself pretty well in my opinion.

Metroid has the issue of not having many characters that could be put in Smash, except Ridley, but doesn't seem Sakurai will add him.

Probably have more of an argument there with Donkey Kong, which is a pretty important Nintendo series, even though I personally think DK + Diddy is pretty good character-wise.

I can see the logic here, but at the same time Smash is sort of reaching the point where there aren't too many more characters that you can add from these series without reaching the bottom of barrel. The Mother series has 3 games to its name and there are no plans for more games so 2 characters seems like a perfect number. F-Zero is basically dead at this point and only lives on in Mario Kart DLC and Smash. Plus, only a handful of characters really stand out from its roster and we hardly ever saw them in action outside of driving.

Metroid is still a good-sized series and I agree that 1 more character would be good, but I feel that's why ZSS got added. Sakurai really didn't think any character other than Samus was important enough to be playable so he gave us another Samus just so Metroid could have more than one character.

The only series that I think is underrepped in terms of characters at this point is Donkey Kong. It's big and still getting games so a third character isn't some ridiculous request.

Don't get me wrong I think it's dope as hell to have Cloud and I'm looking forward to playing with him, I just feel like Sakurai should have maybe put in more deserving Nintendo reps before putting him in, that way having him there doesn't feel like he took some more deserving characters spot

I guess an example would be leaving out K. Rool, and failing to return Ice Climbers (which I understand was for tech reasons) but adding a character from a franchise that after SNES, Nintendo had gotten little support from
