Ok, I just saw cloverfield and I couldnt help but notice a few things:
1. The movie is a FPS with out the shooting. The movement is from level to level and the entire movie is just one perspective where you rarely see the person behind the camera. There a a clear separation between levels ( scenes) and there are enemy encounters at the end of each level . In addition the script for this movie could easily have been a FPS like half life where you only know as much as gordon freeman and nothing more.
2. The monster is Sin from FFX with the head of one of the monsters from resistance. Granted the resistance monster is some kind of arachnid thing, when you look at both Cloverfield and resistance monster side by side they look VERY similar.
3. The monster had Sin Spawn which behaved in a similar way.
JJ Abrams said he got the idea for the movie while in Japan and saw the merchandise there. I wonder what other influences there are other than the obvious Godzilla.
