Clueless Gamer: Conan O'Brien Reviews COD Advanced Warfare

I made this a while ago for the COD games but I see it still applies.

I wish they 'reviewed' Bayonetta 2.

Oh good god I want him to review this so badly. That would be amazing.

I am hardly the first to recognise a generic laugh track it comes up every time for this guys vids, so i am just wondering if anyone knows for a -fact- it is genuine reactions, or blended or fake.
if its genuine the audience has the most 70s laugh sound ever, and are very easily amused.

Yeah ok, sure.

Pretty funny (I was worried because of the preview that it would be only "wow it's sooo cool ! " comments).
It also focused on the thing that bothers me in FPS single player campaigns : all those moments when you're not first-person-shooting. Paying respect and crossing the street ? Come on... at least if you want to insert minigames, puzzles or whatever, make them interesting.
Also is it just me or is the whole "soldier being left behind because he's trapped/wounded but sacrificing himself in a heroic gesture" getting old ? I get the impression I've seen it hundreds of times already, and I barely play FPS (must be all of those E3 trailers).
There are many dramatic ways to die at war without falling back on old hollywood clichés.

And yeah I liked the silly scores too. Maybe he's out of ideas for new ones. But no score at all is ok.

Edit: Audience laughter is usually prompted but not canned. They'll typically flash applause or laughter signs so that the audience knows when to react. They'll also often edit crowd noise from certain sections which may make it sound fake.

The audience is given direction to applaud and cheer at specific moments. It's usually done during the show's opening sequence to fill out the background noise and make the show sound exciting. They also direct applause when segueing into and out of commercial breaks, when the host is announcing the lineup of guests, or when the guests come out on stage. (Not specific to Conan, this is just for live recordings in general)

There is no such thing as a "laughter sign". If they feel the need to, they might sweeten the audio with additional laughter during editing, but it's not as common as you might think, especially in the realm of late night talk shows. It's better to just go with the flow of the audience.

Also, regarding jellies_two, even if they did sweeten the audio here, they would use cuts of laughter from previous recordings to match the acoustics. They would never use stock audio from the 70's.

I have a feeling Conan would prefer inverted y axis on the controller seeing how often he's looking at the sky or the floor.

It seemed like Conan has real trouble with the twin stick controls. I'd love to be behind the scenes when they film this and see how much footage is really him playing etc.

are you sure?
the laughter sounds exactly like scooby doo.

well ... maybe they had those guys that stand at the end of each row to pump the laughter. They use them for those late night shows..

edit: ok I went to google "clueless gamer laugh track" and - the accusation comes up all the time. If he really does record a live audience reacting, then it sure sounds like a laugh machine. What does he do, pay 100 people to travel in to sit and laugh at a 5 minute video then leave? I'm trying to imagine how that works.

Who? Conan or clueless gamer?

so Conan shows the clueless gamer clip to his audience before or after taping the show?
is that correct and someone knows that was what happened with this clip?

Also - what happens with those shows is they mix in laugh machines, using a "laugh guy", with audience reaction in order to get things nice and consistent, so either way, the really fake sounding generic laughter may not be the live audience. Shrug.

... my brain hurts.

You realize that Conan IS the clueless gamer, right? And if you watch his show someone, there are plenty of funny live audience moments, such as when a joke bombs and the audience goes silent

Lol great vid.

Yikes. I've been to Conan tapings before. it's not a laugh track. you should check it out sometime.

The only cues the audience is given is Applause for guests and commercial pauses. everything else is pretty much audience reaction.

This turned into my favorite Clueless Gamer segments ever. I sincerely burst into laughs on the "Frogger" level. I first thought it was a weird misplaced homage to "Frogger" until Conan found the bridge. 10/10

Need to watch more of these - that was actually funny. I lol'd at the Edge hat gag and the where is the "So, I guess you're single now" button.

That's what I thought its next gen frogger.

Another quality Conan review. The pay respects bit would make a good gif with conans comments as text.

For anyone wondering about the audience and how Conan plays, it's pretty obvious. Conan does actually play games, but he's "playing dumb" and slumming it for these segments to generate laughs. This is why he dies repeatedly and spins around and generally acts stupid. The audience reaction is more or less genuine, with these segments being edited to bits. You can tell it's real, as there are plenty of times where there is no reaction and he's going for laughs.

I've always found these sort of amusing, but some work better than others. The Hitman: Absolution video was probably the best. That one had some genuine laugh-out-loud moments.
