CNET Rumor: Hackers Planning Third Attack Against Sony, Publicizing Data

rpmurphy said:
How do sites verify whether an IRC chatlog is legit anyway?

They don't, so they either don't bother writing a story or very clearly say that they have no way of verifying whether the threat is legit or not. If legal, then they should provide us with the chatlog to read for ourselves.

I think any news reporting such ambiguous things like this should be required by law to do it like that. Doing it any other way is profiteering of off fear-mongering in my opinion.

A few posts above you, people asked that we don't wish rape on others. I think its fair to say that wishing rape is unhealthy.

lol I didn't wish rape on anyone

You also can't rationalize keeping a plaintext creditcard database dump lying around.

Just because the hackers were in the wrong doesn't remove all responsibility from Sony.

That's BS. Sony clearly said the CC info was encrypted. There's absolutely no justifiable reason to rationalize this action.

Why doesn't Sony just delete all the credit card and personal info while still offline. If people want to re-enter it, then that's their prerogative, but purge that shit now!

If this is true I'm guessing the hackers were able to go in and probably grab all the admin passwords to all of the systems so if any part of the system didn't have all passwords reset, it would be easy to hack into again. And theres the possibility that there are other security issues in the system other than the reported use of an old version of Apache.

I think this is a good idea. I'm not sure if Sony has the right to do that though (removing information without your consent).

If they want to "have fun with Sony" then go and change their main-pages to pictures of lemon parties, go write "We're still here", and some other crappy things like that.

But they going around specifically looking for credit card numbers, personal info, and similar data; to then publish it or try to sell it? Yeah...have fun guys.

You know what I say? Go for it. If anything it's just going to make this manhunt be so massive, these fuckers won't ever live in peace.

They'd lose all of their memberships. Its certainly an option, but they'd lose a ton of monies if they went that route.

What percentage of customers do you think would re-up? Hell, how many subscriptions do they have on the books for customers who have forgotten they even signed up?

These are the woes of e-commerce, and especially subscription services.

So wait...

They hack the PS3 console because they don't like how Sony took away OtherOS. Then they hack the PSN because they don't like how Sony responded to the hacking of its console. Now they're going to hack it again because they don't like how Sony responded to the hack. Do they not see the pattern here?

I don't actually think this story is legit, well, someone probably did say something like this in an IRC chat. I just find the rationale hilarious.

Hope it's back up just long enough for me to wipe myself off it first.

These morons hacking Sony will probably be the first to moan when it turns out their actions are helping pave the way for the death of Net Neutrality too, I'm sure. Foresight? What's that? They should just be rounded up, and hucked in jail.
Basically.

I find it amusing how easily people trust CNET's article based on information from an informant who claims he/she saw someone threaten to hack PSN on IRC when we've been telling people to disregard twitter and other forum posts saying PSN is back up for the last few days.

Quick, someone threaten to hack PSN so I can whine to CNET that the hackers are gearing up for a third attack on NeoGAF, too!

Well on the info of PSN going back up again we have trusted sources to check. ex: Playstation.com, PS Blog, etc. But on hackers attacks what sources can we trust? 4chan?

A group of hackers says it is planning another wave of cyberattacks against Sony in retaliation for its handling of the PlayStation Network breach.

So that's what the complete absence of logical thought looks like. Who knew.

Good luck. It will be massive arrests for sure.
Just like few months ago whereas the number of UK hackers (cos I know one of them) got jailed for attack in defence of Wikileaks (DDoS on Visa, MasterCard and PayPal)

I really do hope the responsible parties get arrested and do jail time. I won't wish rape on them, because apparently that's not the cool thing to do in this thread, but I hope they go to jail and have experiences typical of being in jail.

Life in prison is the only logical action for these hackers imo.
They cant hurt network or people in prison, and they wont be virgins anymore. Everyone wins.

All in the name of consumer rights! :/

Some people have way too much fucking time on their hands. "Hey, what are you doing this weekend? Oh, well...You wanna organize a large assault on Sony again?"

yencid said:
so anyone still defending these hackers?

I doubt those who did so before will change their mind because CNET decided to write an article about someone on the internet who supposedly threatened to hack the PSN again.

It looks good on the resume!

Did anyone actually defend the group of hackers who stole the personal information?

I thought their actions had met with widespread condemnation, along with Sony for not providing suitable security for their collected data.
