Cold weather isn't that bad if you layer correctly.

I lived in the Northeast for a while now. I was in Texas before that. For many years, I've always hated the cold winters. However, this year I decided to buy and wear more layers and heavier fabrics, winter grade stuff. Furthermore, I started wearing mitts and hats consistently.

For many years, winter would come and I would be freezing when I went out all the time. I hated wearing gloves and mitts since I would lose tactile feel. And hats would annoy me. But this goddamn winter made me finally compromise. Again, I still wore coats and sweaters. I just didn't layer enough and pay attention to having heavier fabrics.

Yeah, I'm a dumbass.

It is my estimation that many people who hate the cold, just don't layer correctly. Again, I lived here for years, but I hesitated due to my own idiocy.

Now I understand Canadians finally ;P

It's pretty common for a transplant to live in denial about winter clothes for awhile. My nephew just moved up here for school and he refuses to buy winter clothes cuz they're "not fashionable and lame" and doesn't want to look like the Michelin man. He wants to show off his skinny jeans all year. He'll come around eventually.

I love fall/winter just because of that. It's the half of the year where you can stunt on motherfuckers with your fashion sense.

Sorry, but cold weather sucks no matter how many layers you wear. I hate it and if it were not for family would leave NY for some place warm in a heartbeat.

I like four seasons. It gives each time of year it's own special flair.

Mono climates can get boring.

You look very fashionable in winter clothes.

You can also wear skinny jeans year round.. I do.

I think for me is was buying heavier fabrics too. I had sweaters, but dinky lightweight ones.

Do you wear long johns? I have no problem layering on my upper body but I don't want to wear tights.

I bought some corduroy pants and heavier wool trousers for work.

I wear tights under my jeans sometimes when it's really cold.

The last couple years have seen me actually start to buy appropriate winter and rain clothes despite living where I live for nearly my whole life.

You don't need to layer up your lower body to stay warm IMO.

Yeah.

However, getting nice padded boots help tons. Basically, paying attention to your extremities.

I knew this intellectually, but was stubborn lol. I like Spring Summer and Fall clothing too much.

Grew up in the Deep South, live in Minnesota now. I love the cold weather. Took a little bit of getting used to and learning how to dress, but now it's really not that big of a deal.

The biggest thing for me was a learning about quality and materials. Living in the south a offbrand jacket or coat will be fine in the winter. In Minnesota when it's negative 15 good wool socks, water proof shoes and a down coat go a long way.

Canadian born and raised but I won't wear huge winter coats either. Quite happy with my leather jacket.

Eh, yeah it's not that bad. Being a Minnesotan, I have about a couple of layers on and I force myself to endure the coldness just because. Put on a beanie, a scarf, and a pair of winter gloves and I'm good.

Depends on what you mean by cold weather. Something like -20 celsius is nothing but -35 with heavy wind is torture no matter what you wear. Not to mention stuff like it easily kills your car battery etc.

Just make sure to auto-start your car every few hours to let it charge.

you either like it or you don't

there is no "getting used to it"

you can adapt through clothing, boots and stuff but if you don't like it: you never will

Yep. I'm from the Caribbean and everyone who goes to university in the US/Canada complains about the cold, but it was really fine for me because I always just layered up.

Yup, as someone that has been living in Canada, I too this year came to this realization. I spent a good stack of money on a Goose winter parka before the Winter came, and for the first time since I arrived I don't complain about the cold at all.

To be fair, with global warming and all Winter now is actually not as bad as it was when I first arrived, but nonetheless

I've lived in the North East for my whole life, and yeah, proper layering goes a long way. When it gets really cold, I usually go for a lighter autumn jacket with a hoodie underneath. And as for lower, pajama pants or long johns underneath cargo pants.

Oh, and quick bit about hands and head.

A wool cap with a bandana underneath will keep your head really warm when it's both cold and windy, and fingerless gloves are pretty much the best unless it gets below zero.

winter is the best time to be fashionable

It's still terrible because you can't always be layered. Plus everything is ugly in winter. Going for runs is worse and less fun. The days are too short and you get vitamin deficiencies. No good video games come out, etc.

Midwest is also the worst region of the country in every way.

When I'm out in the cold I look like a god damn ninja, black wool cap, black hood, black jacket with black hoodie, black ear muffs, black balaclava, black gloves, dark shades, and glove warmers in my hands and boots.

I hate layering though. :( My body has a small range of temperature where it's comfortable so the second I go inside with heating I feel like shit. Sometimes I have to go straight to the bathroom to remove leggings under pants. Having to remove leggings and an extra shirt or sweater while also carrying around a coat gets annoying.

So I've learned to use less layers but maximize what a single article of clothing does. Instead of having to wear leggings underneath pants, I have a longer coat and longer boots so my legs are mostly covered. The coat I can easily take off. Instead of multiple shirts or sweaters just a heavy long sleeve shirt where I can roll the sleeves up.

I live in NYC so it's not even that cold. Can't imagine how I'd dress in worse places.

I only wear these when the temp drops below 0F.

Layering is utterly essential when it's horrible out. When it's sub zero, I gasket multiple layers. Socks then long johns, then another pair of socks over them. Up top, I'll wear a long sleeve shirt tucked between my long johns and my pants and another shirt over that. And I switch from a floppy long coat to a stiff, wool Hungarian military greatcoat when it's below freezing.

Nah, it still sucks. Layering properly won't change the fact that the cold hurts my face, dries my skin out, makes my eyes water, and causes sniffles. And while layering properly leaves me warm enough while I'm outside, it just leaves me with a million layers to have to carry around while I'm inside, or risk overheating.

Winter is shit.

This is why I wear a scarf wrapped over my mouth and nose, sunglasses, and a stocking cap (or two.)

Exposed skin is your enemy in winter.
