Colin Kaepernick didn’t vote

Colin Kaepernick began a national dialogue on issues of race and police brutality when he sat for the national anthem. But when it came time to have a say in America’s direction, Kaepernick punted.

Kaepernick, the 49ers quarterback who is an outspoken critic of racial injustice, confirmed to reporters on Tuesday that he didn’t vote.

In one respect, that’s not surprising: Kaepernick has been highly critical of both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. He didn’t think there was a real difference between the two candidates for president.

It’s more surprising that Kaepernick apparently also doesn’t much care about the difference between the two candidates for U.S. Senate in California, doesn’t think any of the state and local elections matter, and doesn’t think any of the propositions matter. Does Kaepernick really see no connection at all between any of those races and the issues he speaks out about?

If Kaepernick cares about police mistreatment of black men in America, he should care about the way America is governed. He didn’t care enough to vote.

Not saying he will, but people who don't vote and then take the moral high ground when the elected candidate does something they don't agree with by saying "I didn't vote for him/her" are assholes.

Yea I saw his announcement that he wasn't voting. Truly an idiotic statement that takes away from a lot of his recent efforts.

Protest voting that could hurt other marginalized groups is not something you do when you need allies. Fuck you, let me get mine or die trying.

His recent efforts were generally against the system as a whole. We were aware he wasn't happy with treatment stemming from both parties.

I don't want to get banned, so all I will say is that just like his protest, which is protected under freedom of speach, his decision to not vote is perfectly in line with our first amendment.

That said, even if he thought both Trump and Hillary were the same, there are votes for Senators and Representitives, votes on ballot initives such as the Death Penalty, ect.

A lot of black people didnt vote.
So the media of course is on tap to blame black people for losing the election for Hilary. Maybe you should have taken us seriously instead of nae nae'ing with Jay and Bey, Hillay

After four years of a president who openly says Blue Lives Matter. Hopefully midterms and 2020 are different.

So you're telling me Trump is President because there were even black people who were lazy as fuck.

Doesn't change the fact that people bled and died for him to exercise his freedom to vote which extends past just voting for the next president.

When these figures say they do not plan to vote they hardly ever add "but I will vote for our Senators and local figures."

Calling black people lazy? Did you type shiftless or uppity then erase it

Black people didnt come out for Hilary because Hilary didnt come out for them and had to send Obama to shame us into voting for her as a favor for him. Thats the best she had

Keep trying to single out and blame individuals for exercising (or not) their rights. Keep trying to reduce this outcome down into an explanation you can easily understand.

This strategy has proved immensely fruitful.

What the fuck is this black box that keeps popping up on my mobile gaf? Is Trump ruining shit already?

I mean, if people didn't vote, now they'll see the consequence of their actions. I guess all those minorities should've taken this election more seriously, because now the GOP has the House/Senate, Presidency, Supreme Court, etc. And the man in the White House is a billionaire. Hopefully things workout, but it just sucks. Because I really wish they (DNC) would've picked someone more likable than Clinton.

So he energizes a shitload of racists against his cause then proceeds to not vote himself?

Whatever moral high ground her had is lost now. I have no respect for that.

These (very heavily male, very heavily young) individuals keep exercising their rights.

They keep letting other people decide for them. People who set back progress decades.

I was completely behind his anthem protests but apparently he didn't realize the ramifications elections could have on local government and police and that's disappointing.

Taking a knee in front of cameras is well and good and conversation starter but, you eventually have to do SOMETHING.

If you're black, white, purple, orange, middle class, working class, Sports superstar I don't care and you stayed home TODAY of all days instead of voting? Yes, you're lazy as fuck and I really don't mind telling anyone that.

I mean what more could Hillary do? 10 percent voted for a man that said Blue Lives Matter. Besides she lost because of the blue collar vote.

Us minorities are biggest to suffer. If we didn't mobilize I feel the blame is mostly on us. But I don't think it mattered man. The rural/blue collar white vote is still too strong.

I mean, if people didn't vote, now they'll see the consequence of their actions.

No given individual should feel any responsibility or any sort of guilt, because no given individual's vote had the power to change the result of the election.

Guilt over not getting involved more? Sure. Guilt about not going out and helping to organize a rally, not trying harder to convince others, not donating money or time. Those sorts of things can have more far-reaching impact.

But not offering your one measly vote in a state with a difference of thousands, tens of thousands? No individual should feel responsible.

I'm trying to see it from his angle. The whole issue happened during Obama's presidency, and Obama was pretty much powerless to stop it.
I'm not surprised if he thinks both parties are the same. Not I think, but HE thinks.

Of course he might be regretting his action now.

If you didn't choose to vote just because you felt slighted, you can fuck right off. I don't understand how anyone can be that fickle.

Can't complain about white nationalism anymore now. You didn't try to fight against it.

I voted for the best option for the black community. To stay at home because you were bitter is a sign that you don't truly care.

I mean that's great but you know have Trump because you felt it wasn't worth your time or effort to vote so I hope you don't complain about policies he passes over the next 4 years.

I'm not sure why people are brow beating over kaepernick not voting, this is more bullshit to pat themselves on the back that he didn't protest in the right way and is a bad person for his protesting.

Well he is going to be kneeling for the next 4 years. Look at Trump's cabinet. Rudy is going to make sure stop and drink is back. All of them said the BLM was a thuggish group.

I'm he just did a disservice to people who supported him by not voting. There were measures on the ballot in California that could help the communities he claimed to be kneeling for.

There was nothing we could have done. The rural vote came down in droves.

But fuck, you at least could have submitted a ballot.

The new AG is probably going to be Rudy Giuliani who is going to support the legality of stop and frisk type policies on a national level. Really bad.

Do you have any data to back this up our are you just excusing not voting? Blue collar white don't make up a super majority of the US.

This is so idiotic. Beyond belief. It's great seeing GAF melt down in times like these when it's bubble is burst.

He's got a right not to exercise his vote as a form of protest. It does not discredit the cause he was advocating for by not voting –– he was not given a candidate to vote for.
