Colin Trevorrow Exits Episode 9

I gotta hand it to Colin though, he obviously didn't cave in to whatever Kathleen and Co. envisioned. Even at the risk of being fired, he wanted to do what he wanted.

Oh I figured they had the plot and stuff nailed down, and the reason the clashed with Trevorrow wanting to go in a different direction.

TFA would never have happened the way it did if Pablo Hidalgo had been in charge of the story. He rather openly thinks it's too derivative of the OT and ranks it in the lower half of the films.

If I was gonna put money on a replacement, I'd say it will be a conservative choice who Kennedy has an established working relationship with. So Johnson, Howard, and Spielberg make a lot of sense.

He probably turned in some bullshit and got his ass fired.

Push it back to December
Get a woman in the director's chair
Finish out Rey's trilogy on a high note.

This was my gut reaction, but I think it'd be nicer to elevate more female
minority
directors rather than leaning on someone who's already making a name for herself in that context

Hell no. Jenkins about to eat over at WB and once a director gets in WB. They ain't going to leave for something with less creative freedom, less pay, and less name.

Someone call up The Totally Rad Show stat. Get Danny T to do it!

I can only imagine how things looked like at Lucasfilm after Carrie's passing - must be horrible to rewrite a story that apparently relied heavily on her presence. I guess there are only a few options how to handle it and it seems like they weren't happy with Trevorrows take. Geez, rewriting the script must have been a nightmarish task and I don't envy anyone whose job it will eventually be.

That being said, I'm quite relieved that he left Episode IX. Jurassic World was one of the most horrific blockbusters of the past years...simply terrible.

For the life of me, I don't know what Brad Bird and Spielberg saw in Safety Not Guaranteed that suggested that Trevorrow was a major talent waiting to happen, let alone the kind of guy that had the talent to breathe new life into franchises. I know Spielberg got a home run out of the early mentoring of JJ Abrams back when Dreamworks was first starting out and Abrams was one of their idea guys, but there was a good reason why most of the other talent he helped get into the mainstream were already well established directors with a particular style. I like Safety Not Guaranteed more than most, but any fresh indie director could do that film.

I'm strongly betting we see a woman director if not a woman writer as well.

They're also probably gonna have to bump this shit back to December.

Wouldn't the sure bet be getting an established director with a long, proven track record, to avoid all the bullshit they keep suffering.

?

Force Awakens is the best SW yet.

TFA is a great movie, but I wouldn't want him back again. He did his job. His job was to jump star SW and give us an intriguing beginning/set up for the trilogy. He's usually not so great at characterization and getting down to the meat/potatoes of what makes characters tick.

That said, he defied expectations and directed some fantastic character moments in EP7.

But there are far better choices out there, moving forward.

Agreed on both paragraphs.

I really hated JW. Aside from a few fun moments, that entire film was a bland/throwaway experience, IMO. Very glad his writing and direction are no longer attached to this project.

"And then, Kylo took Rey by the hand and embraced her in his arms, resting her head on his chest before gently kissing her forehead and said 'its over now, its all over'. The camera pans out, they're in the wreckage of snokes mega Star Destroyer. Fade to black.
Next shot is Rey holding her newborn baby, the camera pans out to reveal Kylo ren sitting patiently beside her, all smiles but then...the baby's eyes open...the eyes of a sith.
Cut to black"
"So Kathleen, what'd you think?"

A Wrinkle in Time comes out March 2018. Not sure she'd have enough time to work on SW given that it comes out a little over a year after that.

They'll bump it back to December. That gives her 18 months - and she can probably start work on it before March 2018 if she got the gig.

it'd be tight, but it could work.

Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have mutually chosen to part ways on Star Wars: Episode IX. Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ. We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon.

Guess that Book of Henry hit hard.

Give me a David Lynch Star Wars movie with complete creative control

won't happen so give it to Nolan or something that'd be cool

It'll be interesting to see who they go with. I don't understand the clamouring for RJ before we've seen TLJ though. Speaking of which, where's the damn trailer!

Good that they caught it early this time. I'm in the Keep Johnson camp but I doubt he'd be interested.

Other options:
Brad Bird
Jon Favreau
Denis Villeneuve
James Gunn (I know, it could be a tonal mismatch as bad as Miller/Lord but we know he can handle the scale)

Of course, they're all working on high profile sequels of their own except Villeneuve. So call Villeneuve.
