Maybe we should just change the NFL to a college bowl system and have NE and AtL play for the championship in two weeks.
*shrug* I never said it was a diplomatic system.
I don't mind the BCS, personally, because I don't have a horse in the race. The fact that every game of the regular season means so much more is appealing to me.
It's unique compared to the rest of the sports landscape where there's a second season. For example, I hate the baseball postseason because, in reality, you just need 2 starters to get hot to go on a run (see: Rockies, Rays, Giants). What's the point of winning 101 games? Now, that's both a function of how the sport is played. Basketball's the most diplomatic playoff 'cause there are 5 to 7 game series and the game isn't reliant upon a pitcher again 9 (or 10 in the AL).
It's a sensational TV product because of its flaws. Think of how much stronger conference grudges have gotten in the past decade? People fucking hate the [conference of your choice] or laugh at the [conference of your choice] because relative conference strength both matters and is so damn elusive.
So, again, I don't really care about having a "true champion," 'cause I don't have a horse in the race, so it'll never really matter to me. Not to mention that it seems to work out more often than not. I do think it's great that there's a sport where the pressure's on you as a team in the Top 5 starting from the first game of the season (Sunbelt team notwithstanding).
You're more than welcome to claim that 2003 USC would have crushed LSU that year. Or that 2004 Auburn could have handled 2004 USC. Or that this year's Bama team would crush team X. Again, I don't claim that the system is perfect or even fair. I think it's different and more interesting because of it.
If there were a playoff though, there's no way it would or should be a 16 or 8 team playoff. I can buy a Plus 1 system.
On a sidenote: In reality, I don't think we should put much stock into these bowl records because football, more so than any other US sport, is all about positional matchups because it's 11 on 11. Again, it's fun to talk about because we love conference pissing matches in the BCS-era. Not to mention a lot of these programs wind up being in transition or mess around with their playbooks to evaluate younger talent, especially in the lesser bowls.
