Season predictions, eh?

All right, here are mine for Cal:

Sat, Sep 4 UC Davis - W
Sat, Sep 11 Colorado - W
Fri, Sep 17 at Nevada - L (it's an OOC road game that we really should win, so odds are we won't)
Sat, Sep 25 at Arizona - L
Sat, Oct 9 UCLA - W
Sat, Oct 16 at (14) USC - L (yeah, it's Kiffikens, but we still can't beat these guys at home)
Sat, Oct 23 Arizona State - W
Sat, Oct 30 at (24) Oregon State - L (closest thing to a guarantee you'll get... Mike Riley owns us)
Sat, Nov 6 at Washington State - W
Sat, Nov 13 (11) Oregon - W (I think we have an excellent shot)
Sat, Nov 20 Stanford - W
Sat, Nov 27 Washington - W

8-4, 4th place, Holiday Bowl.

Other Pac team predictions:
-Zona wins it, having two conference losses but winning the tiebreaker.
-OSU goes 0-for-OOC, but still comes in 2nd.
-USC comes in "3rd", Kiffin looks like a jackass at least once.
-Oregon, going with Darron Thomas, loses at Tenn, pulls it together and goes through the Pac-10 like a buzzsaw, then Thomas gets injured and they lose the last three to come in 5th.
-Luck looks good but can't win as many games without last year's Heisman winner. Leaves early for the draft.
-Locker leads the Huskies to a surprising upset of BYU or Nebraska, but can't carry the team through the Pac by himself. Still, U Dub finally makes a bowl game. And Locker gets drafted before Luck.

Bold! But I could see it happening. So who would you guess in the title game with them?

WOOT! The Post-Tebow era of college football begins! Who will surprise? Who will disappoint? I don't really care, so long as my Gators do great.

Notre Dame sucks.
Michigan sucks.
I hate the Seminoles.
I hate you Volunteers.
Saban is the antichrist.
I hate Alabama too.
I hate ____ conference refs.

Gators will win the SEC!
SEC will outperform preseason predictions.
Notre Dame will suck.
PEACE.

USC Trojans
---------------

September
9/2 @ Hawaii -- W
9/11 Virginia -- W
9/18 @ Minnesota -- W
9/25 @ Wash St -- W

October
10/2 Washington -- L (Locker tears apart our shaky/thin secondary)
10/9 @ Stanford -- W (I think without Gerhart, Luck gets hit/shaken by DL blitzes)
10/16 California -- W (Bears just can't seem to beat us, and we're at home)
10/30 Oregon -- L (I think injuries have hit the defense too hard to deal with the Ducks offense by this point, and fans look to next two games as "recovery games")

November
10/6 Arizona State -- W
10/13 @ Arizona -- W
10/20 @ Oregon St -- L (we can't win in the state of Oregon, and Oregon State is usually a menace at this point in the year)
10/27 Notre Dame -- W (9 straight baby!)

December
10/4 @ UCLA -- W (Fucla, and their lack of offensive line + who? Prince? but I repeat myself)

End 10-3, 3rd in conference

Excited for OSU's new offense (we're gonna be the new Texas Tech/Houston), but afraid it will take 'til next year to gel.

Kendall Hunter will have a HUGE year though, I would be shocked if he's not 1st Team All-Big Twexas.

And guess what, FSU? YOU GOT COMPANY
WHEN IT COMES TO SHIRTLESS PICS OF PLAYERS

Also, our players have been doing ORANGE STEROIDS. GET SOME!!!!

They play Boise St. in a week or two as well. So much for the Pac 10's image :lol

Not to mention first year starter at QB? They better hope the Rodgers brothers go crazy.

My Pac 10 predictions!

1. Oregon - By default. Oregon got a little worse this offseason due to the usual attrition (arrests, graduation, NFL, etc) but I think Chip Kelly's offense will continue to steam roll. I think they'll be more efficient passing the ball this year as well. They go as far as their defense takes them. Predicted Bowl: Rose

2. USC - Still the most talented roster in the conference in my mind, the only problem is they might be the thinnest roster not named Wazzu. I expect the team to play more disciplined football this year (fewer penalties and turnovers). 4-0 start should be easily obtainable but the make or break stretch starts with the UW game. Injuries and inexperience on D will cost them at least 2 games. Predicted Bowl: None >:|

3. Stanford - Probably the toughest call in these predictions is 3-6, all four teams have their issues and I won't be surprised to see them finish in any order. So why Stanford at 3? I think they have the best coach in the conference right now and the most polished QB. I don't know if I believe Luck is the best QB in the conference, but he's the most ready at the moment. Their running game doesn't concern me as much as the defense. Predicted Bowl: Alamo (This is now the tier 2 Pac 10 bowl)

4. California - I waffled on them and Oregon St a few times for the same reason QB. Then I looked at the schedules, Cal has an easy start and a somewhat more balanced finish. Oregon St. has a brutal start and a brutal ending. I'm still not sold on Cal, but the Oregon St schedule has all the makings of an ugly season. Predicted Bowl: Holiday

5. Oregon St. - Two potential Heisman candidates, one of the better coaching staffs in the country and the hardest schedule in the conference. Oregon St. could either shock people on their way to a BCS Bowl or end up 6-6 or worse. Predicted Bowl: Sun

6. UW - Jake Locker supposedly could've been a top 10 pick this past year. He gets a second year in Sarkisian's pro style offense to show he's not just another fast, scatter shot mobile QB. He has plenty of help on offense but like just about everyone else in the conference tons of questions on defense. The schedule is brutal again (Nebraska and BYU in the first three weeks, followed by a trip to the Coliseum where they haven't won in awhile). I think there is enough there for a bowl game, but they're not challenging the next tier yet. Predicted Bowl: Maaco

7. Arizona - The Wildcats were a few plays away from possibly winning the Pac 10 last year, they have one of the top returning QBs in the conference, so why are they this low? Honestly I don't like all the attrition on the coaching staff. We saw what happened at USC as Pete Carroll lost one coordinator after another. Keeping your staff around in college is a lot more important than the pro level in my opinion. The Wildcats have a fairly favorable early schedule, with Iowa in week 3 and Cal and Oregon St. in the weeks after. If they can make it to mid October at .500 I think they'll go bowling. Predicted Bowl: The Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl

8. fucla - One of the few Pac 10 teams with more questions on offense than defense. They've installed the pistol to try and improve on their anemic performance from last year. Unfortunately for them they've lost a lot on their offensive line and their opening schedule does them no favors. They might not win a game until they face Wazzu, on the first weekend of October.

9. Arizona St. - Like the bRuins the Sundevils will probably keep themselves in a few games thanks largely to their defense, only to have their offense let them down. They've got several QBs with actual game experience, but none of them are particularly good. Schedule wise they have it easier than almost anyone in the conference to start. If they don't start 2-0 then things will get ugly fast. Sadly after those first two games they might not win again until the end of October, against you guess it, WSU.

10. Wazzu - Its hard to believe that Wazzu has played in a BCS Bowl more recently than a large percentage of the Pac 10. Or that they've actually been to the Rose Bowl since the end of the last World War. Pullman is the shittiest town in the conference and one of the most dreadfully lame cities in all of division 1 football, they'll never get big recruits so developing under rated prospects is a key. Paul Wulff does not seem like the kind of guy who can do this, I feel for the man as his life story is hard and sad and he deserves happiness but his happiness will not come this season at WSU and probably not any season at WSU. The Coug-its of the Palouse might improve enough to not rank dead last in every major statistical category, they may even beat SMU again, but winning a conference game still seems like a major hurdle. Any team in the Pac 10 who loses to WSU this year will be the laughingstock of college football.

Going to the Oregon vs. USC game this year - anything I should know?

Show up early if you are driving, parking is horribly limited. Park north of campus, not south. Keep a couple bucks in your wallet for after the game so you can get a bacon wrapped hot dog. I don't think they sell booze in the coliseum anymore so pack a flask or tailgate plenty ahead of time. If you want the quintessential campus pre game experience try to catch the TMB by Heritage Hall before they walk over to the coliseum.

Dunno what else you want to know. Two of the most popular off campus places to eat pre game are Chano's (a burrito stand) and La Barca (a hole in the wall Mexican joint). There's also the new ESPN Zone and Nokia plaza a few miles north of campus that has some slightly nicer type places that might be worth checking out. If you do decide to go there keep a couple quarters on hand for the DASH, it'll save you some walking.

Flip flop the UW and Stanford games and I think we agree. UW hasn't won in the coliseum in a long time (they did come close with a mobile QB one year but that was under Pete). As much as I want to beat Stanford I think Harbaugh is in our head.

How long are you going to be here?

In general, what bluemax said... get there early (several hours before game time), park north of campus (where the students live). If you can't find parking on the street, you may find entrepreneurial types selling their reserved parking spots for $10-$20. Higher prices the later you wait. Go to Heritage Hall or Tommy Trojan and get the Trojan Marching Band + Song Girls experience.

Eating wise you could go with Chano's or La Barca (or La Taquiza I guess -- get the mulitas) for Mexican food. If you want anything else it's gonna be mostly fast food on Figueroa, unless you have a car, in which case the world opens up :P

La Taquiza! That was the place I was trying to remember the name of. Its usually not as busy on game day as La Barca, but its also not as good.

There are also a bunch of new places around campus from when I was a student there but I can't recommend any of them personally yet.

Oh, I have heard that the Yardhouse up at LA Live/Nokia center whatever its called is a good place for food/beer. So if you want something a little nicer but not too far away that's a good call.

No clue I'm just bored with Florida and Bama and they seem like they've been about to turn a corner for a few years now...

Predictions:

Pac 10

1. Oregon - I'm a homer but I actually LOVE our defense this year. Call me crazy but I think they're going to carry this team. Spanish for The Michael is going to have a great year but I believe our D is going to surprise people.

2. Arizona - The offensive line is all back. The skill positions rock. The D is tough. I think this team is going to use that SHITTY Holiday Bowl to motivate them this year.

3. USC - Impossible to predict, really.

4. Stanford - O line is back. The D will get better. Harbaugh will lose at home to USC and Kiffin will ask him what his deal is.

5. Cal - I think this team doesn't have the talent but they have the motivation to surprise everyone. They remind me of Oregon 2007's Dixon squad because NOBODY outside of diehards think they're going to do anything.

6. UW - Locker gets hurt in the 9th game and they lose their final 4 games.

7. Arizona State - Erickson's final year nets them a 6-6 bowl! Oregon transfer Pflugrad catches 134 balls from that hippy they have at QB.

8. UCLA - Nope, not yet.

9. WSU - WULF WULF?

10. OSU - After losing by a combined 121 points in the OOC, the Rodgers brothers both get injured and 2 more lineman get tazed at the Norris Chuck Wagon near campus. 0-12.

Predictions -

Big 12 - Nebraska (perhaps out of sheer fandom, but if they can get a good offense going, they shouldnt have a problem, imo. They were the best D in the country last year and didn't lose much outside of Suh)
Big Ten - Ohio State
SEC - Alabama
Big East - West Virginia
ACC - Whhhhhhhhhooooooooooooooooooo Cares? (probably V-Tech)
Pac-10 - Oregon

Nebraska has the easiest schedule through the Big 12 that they have ever had and really should win it, since the south should cannibalize itself. It really just comes down to the conference title game. Will it be versus OU or UT?

I just hope they win all of their OOC games. Only UW should be anything worth getting worried about, though.

Yeah, I can see why you say that. They did lose both coordinators, and they've got that weird dual setup, and all (plus losses on D). But their offense is experienced and talented enough that I don't expect much of a dropoff, and Stoops has always fielded a decent D. Plus the schedule is extremely favorable, probably the best in the Pac-10.

Still... I could just as easily see them as low as 7, where you have them. 1-7 are a crapshoot this year. In any case, I expect the Pac-10 champ to have two conference losses.

You still have Alliotti, right? Hmm...

Do we have a Pick 'Em sort of thing going this year? I wouldn't mind running one. Ideally I'd like to keep it here on the boards instead of elsewhere (Yahoo, etc.) because I think it'd keep more interest and have people less likely to forget.

Our linebackers are damn good. The D has actually won every scrimmage :D

Also, thanks for the info Bluemax and timetokill. I actually live/work here now but I've yet to venture near the USC campus. I know it's in a rougher area so I don't want to venture anywhere too far, especially if I've been drinking.

I'd probably keep it simple, something like a selection of 10 interesting games where people just pick the winner, 1 point for each game, maybe a bonus game where you have to predict the score for a bonus 3 points for the person who gets closest that week, that kind of thing.

I'd just have the list in your thread (if you're cool with it) and just go through the thread the day before the first games and record the predictions, post results in the next week's thread, etc.

Go by the top 25 or top 15 and do it by confidence points. The one your most sure of worth the most points and go down from there.

Example, take the top 15 in the polls and say you know that the #1 team will win and you're mist sure about that pick, so its worth 15 points. Your next pick is worth 14 points etc. Then the person running the pool will take a game at random and everybody will call however many points they think will be scored in that game. Make that like a 25 point bonus for whoever is closest without going over.

Yeah, I've seen that system around (and played pick 'ems with it) and wouldn't mind doing it but I mostly didn't want to clutter the thread or confuse people who weren't familiar with it (though I guess many in here would be).

It also seems like something like that would really warrant its own thread. Which again, I'm willing to do, just wasn't sure if we wanted to really do that.

ESPN fantasy has something like this, we could create a group on there.

I'd be down with that. I agree that it needs to be its own thread, maybe 1 thread all season. You should make a thread and gauge interest. I'd imagine many people would do it considering the bowl pools we have every year are pretty popular.

We could, I just figured (as I mentioned to Cyan) that it would probably maintain interest and activity better if it was actually on GAF and not on a third-party site.

That said I am still not sold on doing the points thing as opposed to a more simplified method. Of course if most would prefer a confidence system then I'd be fine with doing that.

Let's do AP top 25 and have the winner of each week be in charge of the next weeks thread with the overall winner (either by total wins or best percentage) makes the offseason thread.

Just throwing ideas out there

I dont think we'll need confidence, as there is so many games in the season, seems unnecessary. In the bowl season it makes sense since there are only about 30 games.

Ideas welcome :)

However, I think Cyan does a great job with the threads, I don't really think that it's wise to rely on a ton of different people to make the threads for these things... people have varied schedules and time availability, and it's in general a LOT easier if one person just runs it -- just as Cyan is basically in charge of these threads, assuming he's not banned ;)

Yeah that's basically how I feel about it. And if we wanted to do the whole Top 25, I'd much rather not do confidence for that many games :lol

Also if you turn on ESPNU you can see the future of OSU football playing QB for Huber Heights, Braxton Miller, kid is beasting right now.

I'd rather have Cyan do the weekly threads, and doesn't the winner of bowl pick'em make the off season thread?

Regular season winner should get to make the bowl thread.

That kids supposed to be way ahead of where Pryor was at the same time. And he has a better arm and is more accurate.
