4. The Michael is Spanish For - duh

As a 5'7" guy myself I hope Jacquizz does it for the little people. Go Jacquizz!

If Arkansas can somehow win the SEC, I think Mallet will be right up there. I also think is Udub can mange 8-9 wins Locker will be in the running too. The Heisman is really wide open this year, just like the championship, no clear favorites, this is going to be a good year of football.

It is kind of a weak year for the SEC in terms of Heisman candidates, but then again the SEC has only taken home 3 Heisman trophies in the last 30 years. I suppose its no coincidence that 2 of those came since ESPN started hyping them as the best conference in the land.

I think I'll put together a list of candidates by conference tomorrow.

Don't you think it'd be easier to make a Yahoo Pick 'em league or something? Either way, thanks for keeping score.

.

Jacory is my frontrunner for the Heisman this year (and the Nr.1 pick next year)
I'm probably the only person that likes FSU and UF too
Too bad my ESPN America subscription runs out today, SKY Germany seriously want to charge me more than 30€ a month when I'm only interested in that one channel. Fuck'em, I put all my hope in atdhe.net(and the fact that I can watch most games at work).
Since we're all prognosticating, who are your preseason Heisman picks?
Like I said above: Jacory Harris, dude has it all. The arm, composure, the legs. Kinda like Dennis Dixon. Only needs to get a little bit buffer.

From the SI truth and rumors section:

Five months ago, UM's website called Nevin Shapiro ``an ardent, devoted, intense supporter.'' A student lounge was named in his honor. Now, facing years in prison for allegedly running a Ponzi scheme, Shapiro is writing a book about the UM football program in which he alleges former Canes players committed NCAA violations, said his attorney, Maria Elena Perez. Perez said Shapiro told the federal government about the violations, which are alleged to be major, but it did not investigate because ``that's not their area.''

Miami Herald

Uh oh.

OK, I was MIA for a while. And whilst I was gone, I saw that CU signed an agreement to play Ohio State.

I don't see how the caveat of "They have a tough schedule" makes up for the fact that we lose all the time.

Oh wait, 1.4 million. OK.

Go Dawgs! No good games this first week, but at least it'll be started and college football will be on TV. :D

Won't happen, Mallett is the best QB in the country but they're not a complete football team. They'll likely provide several upsets this year though and finish in the top of the SEC west.

LSU v UNC, Pitt v Utah, and UW v BYU say otherwise. :)

VT v Boise St should be a classic, too!

Well, I have season tickets again this year. Last year my son was only a few months old when the season started so I decided to only go to a few games when I could get tickets. I think he's now ready to go to all the games with me so I'm ready to start brainwashing him into thinking everything UGA = evil, everything Georgia Tech = good.

Take pics and post them here! I plan on doing the same (and so should other Gaffers). That would be kind of a cool way to keep the thread interesting on Sundays.

Washington coach Steve Sarkisian ponders the question: Does he see similarities in the career paths of two of his most famous students — Jake Locker and Carson Palmer, now a starting quarterback with the Cincinnati Bengals? He nods furiously.

"Yeah, very similar," he says. "Eerily similar."

And also, he hopes, prophetic.

...

Sarkisian thinks the similarities go even further, noting that USC went 6-6 in 2001 before busting out 10 wins in 2002, the true beginning of the Carroll dynasty, while UW went 5-7 last season.

"I'm telling you, to me, not only are their situations very, very similar, but for the programs as well," Sarkisian said. "I don't know what that all means. But I hope it can kind of recreate itself."

Locker confirmed for Heisman winner and #1 overall pick. UW confirmed for Rose Bowl and 9-10 wins and beginning of a 7 year dynasty atop the Pac-10.

There we go

Possibly making last minute plans to head to Lubbock to watch the first game of the Tuberville Era at Texas Tech. Pretty excited, haven't been back to Lubbock in a few years (last time was, strangely enough, another SMU game).

Baron Batch will be a household name by the end of the year. Dude is a straight up baller. BOOK IT.

I'm not sold on Tuberville at all. He won at Auburn based on defense+running game, and Batch is the only decent RB they have. And Tuberville's adventures in spread offense are what got his ass fired in the first place.

Try to play straightforward football against OU and Texas, and they'll get their asses handed to them. They'll still be dangerous, but I'm skeptical that they'll ever be as good as they were under Leach again.

Look at the differences in picks across everyone. And people were saying it wasn't going to be a good week in college football!

to be completely fair several of mine were contrarian picks just to go against the flow in games that I thought there was a reasonable chance for the underdog to win.

Do you know why I picked Oregon State? Not because of the football, but because I heard that they have only sold 40k seats at Jerry World for it. Its a completely illogical reason to pick a football game, but damn if that is going to stop me.

And people wonder why I am adamant that they shouldn't join the Big 12.

Contrarian picks rock. Made a lot of money picking games like Patriots over Rams (01), Ohio State over Miami (02), Pistons over Lakers (04), and Michigan over Florida (08) using that "logic."

Man, OSU doesn't play well in the early season. I reaaaaally don't see them winning that one.

That's just pretty much wrong. RB is probably the deepest position on the entire team. Crawford filled in as a starter admirably several years ago, and is a good power back; Stephens performed VERY well last year as a true freshman. True freshman Ben McRoy has been turning a lot of heads this fall as well and is expected to get some playing time due to his speed.

Batch is definitely the man, but to say that nobody else is even decent is the opinion of somebody who hasn't really been paying attention to the team. There are plenty of things to be concerned about for this team but RB isn't one of them.

That's why I didn't pick them. They have 1 non-home win in September in the last 4-5 years. Pretty sad.

This is why the Big XII doesn't want or need TCU. First game of a hugely hyped season, just down the road from the campus, coming off the best year they've had in decades and a BCS bowl, at possibly the best football stadium in the country, against a ranked opponent, and the tickets sold right now is about 20,000 less than the average Big XII game attendance level from last year (and higher than the average attendance of only one individual team, Baylor).

Tech, A&M, and Texas each probably have as many alumni in TCU's hometown as TCU has alumni on Earth.

The D lost a shit-ton, they have a weaker D-line than last year due to losses and they have no returning starters at linebacker.
Most importantly, they lost their coordinator. Maybe whoever was hired to take Stoops' place will keep the ball rolling, but I don't expect them to remain at the same level.

FSU wins the ACC this year and beats UF AND UM. I'm saying it now.

That's fair, I'll admit my knowledge of TTU is pretty limited to years past.

I also take back what I said with regards to schedule: Tech's is pillow-soft this year. Only games that will be tough are UT, @ OU, OSU (always a good game), Mizzou, and @A&M. They'll probably lose to OU and UT, and 2-1 in the remaining 3 tough games would be excellent. 8-9 wins is probably reasonable, considering the schedule (I count 7 gimme wins).

As for OSU, the fourth game (A&M at home) will likely determine the entire trajectory of the season. Win that, and 8-9 wins should happen. Lose it, and we're likely sitting at 6-6. :( I'm pretty optimistic, though--Kendall Hunter will absolutely beast this season, and I expect the offense to hit its stride by the A&M game (and their defense was terrible last year).

The home team in the Tech-OSU series has won every game since 2002. Also, OSU hasn't won in Lubbock since World War II. :P

I'm fairly confident in the UT game as well. Every year we have one of OU and UT at home, and we've played very well in recent years against whoever we have in Lubbock. I don't know that I would outright predict a win yet, but I like our chances. Also, no matter what team I was coaching I'd be scared of a night game in Lubbock.

I can only hope the players are ready to go into College Station and beat the Aggies this year after that embarrassing performance in Lubbock last year. One of the top 5 worst games I've ever seen Tech play. Tech has done pretty well for themselves in College Station over the last decade or so, and I'm really not sold on the Aggies. They are getting a ton of hype because of some names on offense, but their defense was not that good at all last year. People somehow forget that they didn't even have a winning record last year. Fun fact - A&M was 6-0 in untelevised games and 0-7 in televised games last year.

I hope Tuberville is more prepared for Norman than Leach ever was because we always lay eggs there.

El Arroyo? C'mon man. Its alright, but its not the best Tex-Mex in Austin, let alone best restaurant. Boo, Herbie. Do your damn research.

Well, if he is rolling into Austin on a Thursday it means he is getting dollar margaritas and a bunch of coeds at the 6th street location. I can forgive the mistake.

Also, I'm sure they never leave the downtown/campus area when in town. But yeah, El Arroyo wouldn't sniff the top 50 eateries in town.

edit: the real problem is Austin not being listed as a top airport. ABIA is a dream to fly out of. 15 minutes through security.. never have to walk very far, big open concourses, clean bathrooms and tons of stores/good places to eat.
