Comic Con LittleBigPlanet gameplay vid + big hands-on

Yeah, but the delays are totally worth it considering what they've been able to put into this game. I was totally pumped even when this game was at the stage with no triggers, no enemies, no fire, ice..... Now they've expanded it 10 fold.

I will say it again when all the dust settles and if Sony really markets the absolute shiz out of this game
its sales potential is huge.

One thing that I think is very unique about this game is how transparent the development process has been. I can't remember any game in the past that I've seen so many videos, demos, etc. of before its release. And it's not just trailers, it's actual people (developers AND random people) just playing the game while a video camera is recording - most of the time it's accompanied by someone describing what you're seeing and explaining how the game works.

There are very few secrets about what this game is like and I think that prevents well-informed people from questioning it like most do when we only get screenshots and trailers leading up to a release.

I'm very excited for this game.

If I were Sony,

My 30 second Tv spot will be small demo showcasing the game's features with a narrator and showing people how to play it , there would be bunch of them focusing on different things in the game, and I would also have a real commercial to sum it all up at the end of the tv spot or as a seperate one. with the "Play Create Share" anthology.

If I were Sony I would show the customization and everything but a couple times throughout I would
make a nod to a mario esque designed level.

LittleBigPlanet is so in depth, so customizable, so personal that there’s no way to sum it up in words. You could say it is our generation’s Mario; 20, 30 years from now you’ll be telling your children that you got the chance to grow up with this game, and that’s an experience you don’t want to miss.

I'm REALLY looking forward to this game, but this type of hyperbole is reminiscent of GTA4's "Oscar-worthy story" garbage that was spewed by some review sites.

They better spend a good part of that 50 million profit on LBP's marketing budget :lol

:lol Definitely. Screw every other game Sony has LBP is really something special that could push
the system into the mass market much more than anything else. All the rest of the games we are
excited for KZ2, R2, Infamous were excited for because we are Playstation owners and for the
most part hardcore gamers. LBP is really the only game Sony has had in a long time that
could appeal to pretty much everyone.

go apeshite.

Bingo

I think LBP looks great and all, but what I don't think I'm getting is, where is the actual gaming? I feel like it's just one big level editor and physics engine. That's great and all, but I feel the need for some type of objective with the 'game', and I'm yet to see that in the demos I've seen.

Somehow, I don't think Evolution and especially Insomniac would be happy with the entire marketing budget for the fall going to LBP. :lol Plus, I really don't think LBP will be popular with the hardcore fanbase. It's too cutesy. Should it be popular? Fuck yeah! I just think most of those types will think they are too cool or whatever to play it. :(

Platforming and puzzle solving will be the majority of the gameplay.

vvv 50 as far as I know vvv

Nope, I strongly strongly disagree with that marketing angle. It's hard to take a risk with new IP but I do think that LBP is something that can have VERY long legs. They don't even need to market it just once; they can spread marketing over a few stages (Yes, I know this is pretty much AAAA treatment).. just like World of Warcraft with its recent B celebrity promotions.

If they want to market this to the mass consumer and casual gamer, a simple advertisement like the Dream Trailer coming out of E3 2008 would be good -- but at least 3-4 different advertisements featuring different levels and such would be better.

You don't want to market hard on "building your own level" or even "sharing levels". These aren't concepts which are easily communicable to the masses. And the hardcore are already fully aware of these features. If you market to the masses, you need a compelling hook and simple message.. the Dream Trailer is :

(1) A narrative ad based on the save-damsel-in-distress mould and is easily understood by all
(2) Shows off the crazy little cute decorations and level designs
(3) AMPLY shows off the cute emotions of the Sackboys and their appeal
(4) Has great music

This will get to ALOT more people than a "Mario" level would. I won't deny that the Mario tribute will have its positives, but you have only so much budget. I wouldn't mind multiple advertisements showing off different aspects of LBP but any focus on sharing and creating has to be accompanied with a brilliant ad. Rather than have a 30 second ad all devoted to exploring Play Share Create, something like the Dream Trailer would work far better.

It's a task ahead for Sony marketing and hey, I'm not going to do their job for them :D I'm willing to work for you though Sony ; ) Even though you rejected my work application to your Beijing branch... ;_;

This game would probably have lots of appeal to casual gamers.

Too bad they all bought a Wii already.

In fact, it might even be better than Mario Galaxy.

If it weren't for the fact that it was first and foremost a sandbox game

There is huge potential for creation of levels from other games

Except that the main character is still a beanbag with weird physics and the other companies will probably force them to take it off the server

Yeah, but so is SMB, and in that game your jump on goombas and get past Bowser to save the princess in addition to jumping on platforms. In LPB there just doesn't seem to be any objective other than jumping on platforms.

Thats actually a really good point and I think if Sony does indeed follow a layout like that it could
go really well for them.

My point of showing a mario level is just that if they are going to try and quickly show some of the
appeal for the game immediately a kid would really connect to that. I am not saying sackboy needs
to look like Mario but just that the mechanics of the level look familiar so people can clearly see
its potential.

But like I already said I think you bring up some good points.

Doing it with 3 other friends without the screen being chopped into tiny segments? Not to mention the endless possibilities of creation.

Objective: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/37356.html?type=

Seriously? When I was playing SMB as a kid I was NEVER thinking about the Princess or whatever shit. Just the jumping and dodging. Anyways, you can create your own levels with your own purposes.

there are substances that can kill you etc....mario had zero motivation to complete the game beyond getting by the puzzles...story was amusing but nothing etc

There are 50 or 60 levels in the story mode, plus some tutorials apparently, for those wondering above about the number of levels on the disc.

WATCH NEW VIDEOS.

There's death, 'proper' enemies (including a very goomba like one you jump on to kill), bosses (with one very similar to the final bowser boss in SMW, in terms of firing back what he fires at you). There'll be a variety of enemy brains to attach to your contraptions to give them various enemy mechanics (like the 'goomba' one).

Great news, but as I did say in about every thread regarding Gunvalkyrie once or twice... I hate pressing R3 or L3 (or the equivalent on the Xbox controllers) while moving the sticks and pressing other buttons around... :(.

Still, just about everything LBP wise looks hysterically enjoyable :).

I'm not trying to troll or anything, just pointing out some flaws in the "this will move PS3s" argument. IMO, this game could not be done on anything other than PS3.

Didn't get any hands-on time with it at Comic Con, but I watched them play it for a bit. Looks pretty fun, but I can see myself becoming bored with it fast. Had some major slow-down when lots of physics stuff was going off at once, but it still looks super polished.

Game has so much appeal though. Love the art :D

Ouch. Weird considering we've never seen a hint of slowdown in any footage so far.

See that's exactly what I wanted to hear. I don't have time to to sit around and create vast worlds for the game (although I'm sure that's fun). I just want levels already created for me that I can 'beat'.

There's a boss battle video from e3 here:

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/36988.html

It's a very classic three strikes, 'throw back what he throws at you' style boss battle.

This G4 playthrough also from E3 has a 'proper' enemy at one point. You capture the AI brain to kill the enemy (in the case shown, by hopping on it). A very simple mechanic, but there will be a variety of brain types apparently, and of course, you can attach them to any kind of contraption..in this case a thing with a spiky hammer swinging back and forth:

http://www.g4tv.com/e32008/videos/27098/Exclusive_Hands_On_LittleBigPlanet.html?keyword_key=319

The combination of even a small set of AI brains with the mechanical contraptions you can create should allow for a pretty great range of enemy creations.

edit- hadn't noticed specifically before, but there is another enemy brain type demoed in that G4 vid - the thing that fires the explosive projectiles looks like it's controlled by a brain that's triggered when you get up to it. edit 2 - actually, i'm wrong, i think! the brain was just on another thing to control movement, but it didn't have any deadly stuff on it itself..
