GAF is back, hooray! I read some comics last night and felt bereft when I couldn't immediately log in and share my thoughts.
So, I went and impulse bought the three issues so far of Catwoman, and I have to say that I'm really really impressed by the book so far. I was put off but the t'n'a controversy when it came out so I skipped it, and I'm really annoyed that I listened to the internet on this one, because it's a top-tier book that is not getting the love it deserves.
Firstly, I really don't feel like the book is sexist at all. I mean yeah, my penis maybe disqualifies me from having an opinion on the matter to some people, but I didn't find it exploitative since it really fits the nature of the character. She's sexy, she's funny and she's dangerous, that's how she's always been, but I feel that Winick has gone over and above many previous portrayals of the character to give her some depth not seen since Brubaker, while also amping up the hotness-factor, which a lot of writers maybe shy away from. The famous first couple of pages where a faceless Selena is dressing hurriedly don't read salaciously to me at all. They read like someone is trying to get dressed fast and GTFO of their apartment. It lent the sequence tension and dare I say it, humour.
Catwoman is a highly sexualised character, that much is for sure. But she's highly sexual in an awesome way. The later issues where she's flirting with Bruce are awesome, the pages crackle with mischief and fun, and I think Selena's overt sexuality give the book a really unique tone. She's not used or abused for her sex (although this is hinted at in the sequences from her past), she takes it and she owns it. Surely, part of this plays into a submissive male fantasy, but not all objects of fantasy necessarily have to be portrayed or read in a negative light. And then again, I can also see women reading this and enjoying the power fantasy of putting themselves in the shoes of an ultimate sexy badass.
And the story itself is great too. Tense, brutal, full of defeat and catharsis and revenge, with moments of real joy and slinky Catwoman fun. The violence is shocking but it kind of suits the character. When she attacks a scumbag mob boss, you have a real sense of her history and of her rage. The character is multifaceted, not just a male fantasy wrapped up in shiny leather.
But the shiny leather is good too, and Guillem March's artwork is stunning for the most parts. The man can draw some godamn sexy women, that much is for sure.
So yeah, this book is the shit. If you've been holding off on it, dip your toes in and see how you like it. I guarantee it's not what you thought it was.
