Bleeding Cool: James Asmus and Christos Gage speak out on rumors of looming 'Generation Hope' and 'Avengers Academy' cancellations

Short version: Asmus has been assured repeatedly that GenHope will continue through at least issue #17; beyond that, sales will determine. Gage warns fans of self-fulfilling prophecies when it comes to books on the cancellation bubble, and points to X-Factor as a series that's defied convention for years -- and implies Academy will follow its example. He also speculates that X-23's cancellation had less to do with sales and more to do with Marvel looking to take the character in a new direction.

AA is great I hope it sticks around, currently on issue 15.

Guys, which are your picks of the year (TPBs or one-shots)? I am looking to get something nice for christmas. At the moment I have only the second Chew collection on my list.

Get Batman: The Black Mirror, coming in hardcover next week. It collects Scott Snyder's incredible run on Detective Comics, and it's really really good.

ha, I was about to post the same thing. Probably run of the year, had the best "Fuck yeah Batman!" moment of the year.

If you're feeling like splashing the cash you maybe might like to get the new Parker collection that's coming out, super oversized Darwyn Cooke goodness can't be bad. Daytripper by Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon makes a great collection.

Everything else I can think of hasn't been traded yet, like Animal Man, Batman, Batwoman and Catwoman from the new 52. Next year these books will be the best things on the shelves though.

Edit: it's actually kind of telling that I threw out almost every new comic that I bought this year apart from a handful, been a pretty mediocre year until the new 52.

Also, dunno if anyone's in NYC, but Jim Hanley's Universe is doing a 30% off the entire store Tuesday and Black Friday.

I just redeemed my first DC Comics digital comic code (damn these things are loooooong!). Is this right that I have to be logged into my Comixology account in order to read it? I can't read it offline?! What the hell, this sucks.

I regret not picking up all of Snyder's run. I was turned off after Detective Comics 873's ending and didn't start picking them up towards the end. I like the floppies more than the trade paperbacks but it's looking more and more like I'll just get the tpb over searching for the single issues to fill in my run.

Hmm... I missed it, too.

Yeah, I'm SORELY disappointed by having to be logged in/online in order to read the digital DC comics. So essentially I'm paying to be able to read them online, instead of actually having a digital copy. F'ing blows.

I use comicxology so this isn't an issue for me. I have migrated to digital comics for several reasons and I have found the iPad a really good reader. It takes a bit of time to adjust but its a good reading device. I can't speak of how it compares to other digital reading devices.

I don't understand. Doesn't DC comics use Comixology? Are you saying that Comixology does allow some sort of download/offline reading option?

well i download comics to my ipad, so I'm not sure how you're reading them, but i don't have to be online to read them. And the comics are tied to comixology so they can be migrated to multiple devices.

Ah, I've been reading them on my netbook. Just started today. Will download the app on my iPad and give that a shot. Hopefully it's more convenient.

is the iPad the best tablet for comics? Thinking about getting one and reading comics on it would be a big part.
Tough call. Really it comes down to whether you prefer iOS or Android because it's close.

iPad Pros:
-Best single comic reader app in ComicGlass (imo)
-Widest selection of various comic apps: file readers, standalone graphic novel apps (like Meanwhile & Operation Ajax), and storefront apps like Comixology.
-Great screen quality.

Android Pros:
-Supports Flash so reading Marvel Digital Unlimited subscription is possible.
-Removable media on many tabs supports loading comics via SD card or USB.
-Screen aspect of 10.1" is closer to "native" comic book page aspect.
-Quality of screen varies per tab but can be as good as iPad.
-Possibly cheaper than iPad but make sure the screen is good.

Alright retro 80s Marvel fans, the Monday 99 cent sale is Secret War. This is one of the early Marvel events I know loosely from synopsis and cliff notes (ie symbiote suite) but is it worth a read? The premise does seem crazy fun.

I've read two chapters and this Operation Ajax is fairly amazing. It's the best merging of cinema and comic I've ever seen, at least on the comic side of the fence.

So far I'm tempted to say this could go down as the landmark work of the motion graphic novel, if the art form ever catches on (and I hope it does).

If you have an iPad, download this book NOW while it's free!

I came to post the same thing! Ajax just sucked me right in, the subtle animation, the minimal sound effects. Goddamn, I want all comics to be like this!

I don't understand how he even got his own ongoing in the first place. At least x-23 has had some sort of character development into someone who is likable.
Daken, like his "sister", was just riding Wolverine's coattails. It's like those kids that get into good schools cause their parents went there, or some shit.

Eh, I don't think it's a must-read, to be honest with you. It's really overwrought, and a lot of the characterizations are really off-base, especially if you're used to the current status quo.

Also, this is the first Secret Wars, so there isn't even jheri-curl Beyonder to gawk at.

Good week for DC comics.

I was thinking the exact opposite, there's nothing at all that I want this week. Sucks.

Ah, Marvel picking up the slack though. Wolverine and the X Men! Also, does anyone know if Fantistic Four 600 is going to be day and date digital? I'd love to continue reading that book.

Daken, like his "sister", was just riding Wolverine's coattails. It's like those kids that get into good schools cause their parents went there, or some shit.

Probably. X-23 needed a decent writer to get any sort of characterization. Daken is just a piece of shit at this point though.
