Community S4 |OT| I Remember When This Show Was About Community College

Now THAT was a Community episode. Bravo.

Is it me or is Troy basically nonexistent this season? A couple one-liners each episode, and that's mostly it.

Donald Glover never seems to do interviews or go to things like PaleyFest. With his rap/comedy career doing well perhaps he's a bit checked out?

I remember last year during the rumors of cancellation that Glover said he hoped it was canceled so he could move on. Might be wrong, though.

Really liked this episode. If this season is doing one thing right, it's making me love and appreciate Britta again.

And this is season is turning me into a Jeff/Britta fan, too. The first three seasons had me thinking Jeff/Annie was the better pairing, but I'm really loving the Jeff/Britta moments.

It was always about Jeff and Britta since the pilot. I can't understand anybody thinking Annie is a better match for Jeff, other than being too focused on her breasts.

So why did Chevy not like where his character was going again? Because the last 3 episodes make him seem good.

Meh, if you ask me, him having a fight with the producers is probably the real reason why he left the show. The cast of a show will rarely say publicly the real reasons as to why a certain person left the show; best not to stir some shit.

Britta's story was amazingly sweet with Jeff texting "You've Britta'd the hell out of this thing". It had a lot of that old school Community charm.
Abed's storyline was predictable but Troy's description of Kat as a “toddler with a growing disease” and coat girl Rachel's TV knowledge were great gems from it.
Although I have not liked the current overuse of the Daybreak song this season, I have to admit that the muppet rendition at the end was incredible and super catchy.

I want Kat to myself. The other fake Abed can have the coat check girl. They're both good though. I feel bad for Shirley's friend who just got plain forgotten about.

Every time I saw Shirley's friend I kept thinking it was the actress who was Laura from Family Matters. I have no idea why, it wouldn't leave my mind.

So that song, Daybreak Battle Born said above, that happened in the post-credits teaser - is that a wildly known song? And if so from where?

Jesus, so many of the jokes fell flat for me. I laughed out loud once. Once. Rachel or Rachael or whatever, though, is the best thing to happen this season.

I don't think anyone even knew about it before Community. Michael Haggins wrote it (the Daybreak song) and I guess it's in one of his albums.

My sister met Jim Rash and got him to sign my copy of Season 3

Oh yesssss!

Edit: that's her hand not mine. :p

It wasn't gut-bustingly or consistently funny, but the heart was there. That was something lacking in the first 3-4 episodes. I had a smile on my face most of the time.

Loved this episode. I liked how they handled Abed this episode. Not too heavy handed on the references. Lots of good jokes all around. The tag at the end was hilarious.

Glover has always over-scheduled himself. Even going back to his writing job on 30 Rock where he was still an RA in college at the time. He's just one of those people that's constantly working and that means he's going to have to miss a lot of the non-mandatory parts of his various careers.

And I believe it was a line on one of his songs where he said that bit about wanting the show to be cancelled but I think that was more of a reflection of his being overworked which he often acknowledges in his music despite the fact that he continues to do it to himself. I don't think he genuinely wants the show to get cancelled though.

And my axe! err.. I mean and my wake up alarm on my phone. I have the 8-bit Community theme as my default ringtone. :D

I can't believe they got Brie Larson. I adore her so much. Can't wait for her to blow up in things like Short Term 12.

Holy shit, an episode with some real heart and feeling!

Unreal...I haven't seen that in a couple of years.

That was a classic episode. And Dean, other than his pointless black and white dress, was great for the first time since Season 2.

MORE LIKE THIS PLEASE.

Quoted because I wanted to praise this episode but was unsure of what to say.

This episode was cute but mostly just highlighted how wrong I think Abed's being written. I think that's mostly what's wrong with this season, actually, and it suggests something about where Dan Harmon's biggest contribution was.

I thought it was the first time in 4 years that he has had any growth. That moment when he could have kissed the coat check girl but didn't because that trope wouldn't go well with the genre he was playing was a great turning point for him. Nice to see him take something seriously for once.

And Jeff's text to Britta was great. Pierce has been solid for two straight episodes now, as has Jeff.

And Changnesia somehow hasn't gotten annoying yet. They aren't overusing "Kevin" at all which is nice. They ruined Pop Pop long before they should have.

The reason Changnesia hasn't annoyed me yet is because Chang is finallly in a sympathetic and somewhat likeable position. This is the best he's been since Season 1-Early Season 2 in my opinion.

I can't believe they have barely done anything with the fact that the Dean lives right next to Jeff much yet. I feel like that'll change by Christmas, but still.

Totally forgot about that.

And yeah, Kevin has been solid. He's just the cute little hapless Asian dude.

Tonight the extent to which Chang was reminding people of his Changnesia showed glimpses of the psychopath beneath the surface. I loved it.

Pierce telling Jeff to take it easy on Britta and let her be happy was possibly one of my favorite moments of this entire show's run. It just made so much sense.

I need gifs of Britta laughing and being happy in that scene. Then turning to smile at Jeff when he sent her the text. NOW.

Britta forever. :)

Agreed. Pierce has rocked these last two episodes.

I guess I'm not really interested in seeing these characters 'grow'.

But beyond that, I don't really see what happened to Abed in this episode as growth. Abed doesn't not take things seriously, he lived inside his head. His interactions are at a distance from the world not because he's a child but because that's who he is. I think this season has basically infantilized him (from which I guess he now gets to 'grow up' and be a real boy) and I find it all a bit distasteful. Harmon was walking a line with him (not always perfectly) that the new writing team is falling all over.

They've gotten good at bringing the heart but it's still not funny. In fact, all three comedies I watched tonight weren't all that great at bringing the laughs.

It'll be interesting to see how they deal with the lack of Chevy Chase next week (as it's an episode produced after the finale).

Was his behavior that different from being Normal-with-a-capital-N in the ep with Shirley's wedding? Or the Abed-as-Jesus episode? Or the Dreamatorium ep? Or the S3 ep where he wore the Batman costume again? Or "For a Few Paintballs More"? Or the first two documentary episodes?

I think the execution on Abed's dialogue was a little off tonight, but his plot felt entirely in line with all the stuff Harmon did.

I think in those episodes people *thought* they had to protect/manipulate/infantilize Abed, but he always turned out to be far more in control and self-aware than they gave him credit for. They largely directly contradict the notion that Abed is broken in favour of him being, in essence, the most self-aware of the bunch. In this season he's just being played as a kid in a candy store.

i don't think it's possible to run 'pop pop' into the ground. part of the joke is that it shouldn't get the reaction it does.

Well, I can see your point there, but in the S3 finale, the Dreamatorium ep, the Abed-as-Jesus ep, and most of all the mid-S3 ep where he got way carried away with the celebrity impersonators service (speaking of kid in a candy store...), Abed really wasn't in control. He got really carried away in a bunch of the Harmon episodes and he needed the group (or at least someone in the group) to bring him back. Shoot, even Harmon said that in the first two seasons they'd maybe gone too far with making Abed awesome and not showing the downsides of being Abed.

I actually still enjoy 'pop pop' to a ridiculous degree.
