Compilation of Switch UI screenshots so far

I really hope that's not the case. It wouldn't be my first choice, but Netflix or another video app in Tabletop mode could be cool on the go. Better than my phone in all likelihood just by having a larger screen.

That'd just be an app from the eShop. Would be just like a game.

Hopefully there's a media player and an internet browser. The Wii U browser was pretty good and it'd be pretty convenient to watch a movie or play some FLACs (lol thats just an extremely unlikely wish) without wasting my phone battery.

When Laura (I think?) said the UI would be tile-based similar to Wii U/ 3DS I was honestly a little worried as I'm not really a fan of those.

This one however, is more in line with something like Windows or PS4 which I really like.
Can't wait to see the whole thing in action.

I'm glad they stuck with white as the main UI color scheme.

I really like how there's not:

"buy this game now!"
"pre-order now!!"
"Katy ParPars new single is out now!!"
"Sale! Sale!"
"buy the DLC now!"

Plastered all over the place. It's rampant on PS4 and Xbox One (more so on One). So annoying. Hopefully Nintendo doesn't follow suite, with their paid online system though they may introduce advertisements :(

edit: though on PS4 ads are usually only present in the PSN store.

rofl

and what pray tell would they be asking you to preorder, IOUs?

The icons at the top tell me that you can have different users on one console. The Japanese screen has a picture of a Mii so are they still around?

I hope you can change the size of the Game Icons. I like the small icons on my 3DS screen.

My guesses for the circle icons in the middle/bottom...
Red:Gaming News/Notifications
Yellow:eshop
Blue: No clue (probably something simple and I will respond with "duh" lol)
Grey joycon- Joycon pairing
Grey Wheel- Settings
Grey Power button- Well it's not a reset button ;)

Overall it looks sleek. I wouldn't mind themes though. Hopefully we can randomly rotate themes like with the 3DS

I thought the grey wheel looked like a brightness icon.
Blue icon might be themes or maybe game library? Looks like a Mario mountain scene.

That is the Album.

It's where the screenshots you take using the capture button will live. From there, you will be able to post those shots to social media.

Information is on the official Switch page.

So friendslist is really on the phone only right? Since i dont really see a button for it?

Right.

They weren't joking.

I don't see any evidence of an Activity Log yet.

Nintendo pls

It may be in settings, but you may be forced to use the Parental Controls app for that info.

The issue with the Parental Controls app is that it's whole console activity, not just your user activity.

What about those avatar icons at the top? That's either friends online or friends in your party.

That's users.

As in, the Switch will support multiple user accounts just as the Wii U did. That online stuff will be app only (for the time being).

Right.

That really sucks I hope they add it to the system later.

It will always feel empty without Miiverse. God damn it, Nintendo. Why?

I think they'd just genuinely moved everything like this to smartdevices, including Miiverse. You'll probably still have a Miiverse-like system but your Switch will beam this to your phone or upload it directly to said system but you'll mainly interact with it on your phone. They've also done the reverse, that your online/Switch friends can be imported from social media, so they've effectively abstracted out the whole layer of OS and moved it off of the system.

Don't be surprised if Streetpass also moved to your phone.

Guessing the red icon is a firends list as well as screenshots from friends and announcements from developers like in miiverse.

The thing feels a bit sterile, but would really come alive with animations and some chimes. Nintendo makes sweet music for even their system UI so hopefully that makes it better.

Also, Miiverse would have been nice :(

That sounds dumb and needlessly complicated.

With the way it's designed, you'll only be looking at it for seconds. You'll power up the Switch, pick the game you want to play, and then you're done.

No more interaction with the NS aside from the occasional system update announcement on the Alerts page.

Gameboy evolved, I'd call it, for better or for worse.

Nah, or at least I don't think so.

I've heard people talk about this/things like this for years now, like: Streetpass could just be a phone feature that you can sync with your 3DS. Thats an example, and I've heard it for various reasons such as: don't want to carry my 3DS everywhere, don't want to drain my battery, no one ever carries their 3DS everywhere, etc.

Miiverse with drawing and chatting (and integration with image captures from the Switch) would be neat to have on the phone for when you're not carrying around your Switch or don't want to break it out just to Miiverse. Also with the change/move away from the 3DS's screen and stylus, there's not even much of a difference between phone and Switch capabilities for drawing.

Etc...

They've also made Parental Controls at least partially mobile-app related, again for much the same reason as with Miiverse, it puts it in the parent's hand at any given moment. I think its fairly clear that their going in full with this method of smartdevice+Switch cooperation.

I dunno, the only reason why I use Street pass is because it's on my 3ds. A street pass for phones wouldn't work the same way because it would have to assume your phone has Bluetooth always on and the such. This also discludes people who either don't have a smartphone or not one current enough to run said apps.

Miiverse is already accessible via a phone and it doesn't seem like anyone is using it outside of the actual gaming console.

If I have to get on my phone just to set up a Minecraft or Marko kart with my girlfriend than Nintendo's failed.

Most of the phone online stuff is really lame, but a phone Streetpass actually sounds pretty great.

So, uh, they just hasn't loaded the Activity Log app in, right? Or it's in one of the user menus or Apps? I'm pretty sure I saw it in the parental app but it looked barer boned than the U's.

Also this thing will definitely have Netflix, Hulu, etc. I'm kind of shocked at the lack of Internet Browser though.

Hopefully there's an activity log in some way, shape, or form. It was probably one of the most low-key, but best features on the 3DS (we don't talk about the WiiU one).

I think Laura's reports of them wanting to "focus on the gaming aspects" first were true, and we'll see web browsers, streaming apps and more later on. They even made it clear that video sharing function was coming "later".

We'll probably get a Direct in a few weeks similar to the one they aired before E3 2012 for the Wii U that detailed the main menu/UX and the "Plaza" or whatever it was known as back then.

I like its minimalistic style.
Looks like a mixture of the PS4 and 3DS UI.

"Game News" is an interesting choice to have as a button there, as the first button even.
I still hope they'll integrate Miiverse into this somehow. Also a Web Browser.

Nice to see that the Screenshot Gallery seems to already be available (the 3rd button).

EDIT: People missing the friends list: Maybe they moved that to the Options menu, which we haven't seen yet.

What's with the discrepancy between "Time Is Up / Time's Up" in those two screenshots?

Anyway, looks sleek but a bit barebones. I like.

I think one is for when the alloted time is actually up and the other one is when the time limit is overdrawn.
Parental controls give you the option of putting the game to sleep when time is up or to keep it running with the overdrawn time shown on the Parental Controls app.

Actually.

This sounds better. Why waste your Switch's battery when your phone can handle all those features, then just push them to your Switch upon relinking? It'd be like how my phone pushes notifications to my smartwatch.

The more I think about it, the more it kinda makes sense.

So it sounds like and looks like capturing video is not going to be a thing at launch. I wonder what else isn't going to be available at launch. It would be hilarious if the free trial version of their online service isn't available day 1.

There seem to be stats in the parental app. If they are on there, I would expect the activity log on mobile too, if at all.

Yea! We need activity log for moments like this:

How long before they start rolling out themes, I wonder?

I don't think the Wii U had any but I thought it was a good addition to the 3DS.

Streetpass doesn't really work on a smartphone to smartphone connection. You'd need to:

1. Keep Bluetooth always on (this one's easy, but most people probably don't do it)
2. Keep the phone constantly in a visible state for other Bluetooth devices (on most devices I believe this only happens temporarily and after explicit user input) and/or scanning other devices
3. IIRC you always have to manually approve a new Bluetooth connection (not sure if there's even an option to auto-accept with jailbreak/root access)

I hope the thing runs with some efficiency. The WiiU was painfully slow before it got an update, and it's still slow after the fact.

This. The Wii U needed to load every single menu separately, so if you went to settings you would have to wait for the console to load. It was the low-point in games console OS history.

It would definitely be cool, but not everyone has a smartphone. There needs to be a way to do this stuff in the Switch itself.

Why did they remove Miiverse when they now have a dedicated screenshot button?

Nintendo works in mysterious ways.

I love that their are five images in the OP that are only supported by Chrome. Useful!

Because everyone loves sharing their sick Splatoon paint penises on Facebook.
