[Confirmed] Microsoft to launch Xbox One in China

That's fun. Because obviously you don't know the truth.

In China, PS4 is much more popular than Xbox One in grey market.
And those who love playing video game and have the ability to afford those consoles and games, most of them know it would be stupid to act like what you've said.

I'm not sure, As a Chinese gamer myself. I can see PS4 being more popular than Xbox one among hardcore console gamers, due to MS screw it up with DRM and being less powerful etc, but I don't think Xbox as a brand is much weaker than PlayStation in China.

And I'd say Chinese gamer's taste are not that close to Japanese gamer's. like, Monster Hunter is very popular, but Halo is equally popular too. and call of duty more welcomed them both above. and I can say elder scroll is more popular than FF here since last gen

That being said, I don't believe the number of hardcore gamers in China is great enough to call itself a market. and even with the ban lifted, I doubt the gov will allow to have video game advertise outside of websites and game magazines, there's no big gamer retailers like EB or gamestop as well. there's few ways the consoles can reach the masses.

As for the PS4, XBox One and Wii U. My opinion is PS4 does not stood a chance, simply because it's a gamer's console, which is the last thing you want to be when trying to tap Chinese market, most Chinese parents are anti-gaming and they are the one with buying powers, their kids (Even maybe already in Uni with a part time Job) unlikely able to afford one themselves. Which is why most Chinese youth gaming on PC, you tell your parents you need one for your uni work, they will happily buy you one, you don't tell them what you actually want the PC for.

Xbox one may have a slim chance in this regard if it able to have local partners on on demand Movie and TV, or maybe just partner with Tecent as a local agent. but it will be much more expensive then other TV boxes. Kinect may have certain appealing to adults because unlike in Japan, Most Chinese family in cities have big enough room to play it. but the cities don't have enough spaces for people to exercise outside. still the price having to be really affordable for people to even consider it (like at about 200 USD)

Can not talk something detailed about it due to DNA.
But when you have Apple TV, PlayStation, Xbox and even something like OUYA in your house operating great , Tron is useless.

Wait. A Chinese company, made you sign a NDA? rofl

Really not because of that, you think we Chinese like Americans? hell we even don't even like ourselves.

I'm just saying; there are still some serious mixed feelings with Germans around Europe.

It's only been 70 years. That's not very long

ps3 is actually pretty big here in the grey market, and a lot of those xbox 360s that come with hundreds of games pirated on them. i doubt after years of being able to find easily pirated grey market shit, the general public is going to dish out so much for non-hacked retail consoles.

PS4 has streaming features & channels, too.

Yeah, everyone who thinks Sony is going to do super well in China has forgotten about the entire WWII thing. The X1 may not do well, but I'm not sure China will even allow WiiU & PS4 to be publicly sold, will they? (Black Market not withstanding)

@zhao3gold - I'm not sure this is aimed at the current market as much as "put console in market, hope developers start using it / creating stuff for it". The X86 architecture makes moving PC games to X1 in the future much easier than other consoles. Also, the market for what games are popular in China could easily change once consoles becomes more common place and China moves into the position the US currently occupies in terms of middle class wealth over the next 20-30 years.

Um Nintendo handhelds have been allowed to sell in China forever. They have a Chinese distributor iQue.

And german products are still one of the most imported.

You guys can't make arguments like these, the potential buyers of consoles probably don't give a shit where the console does come from, more important is what games can they play on it, and so far both cinsoles have nothing really fitting and interesting for the chinese market

After living and working in China for the past 10 years, here is what I have noticed when it comes to gaming in China

1/ 95% of gamers in china are divided into 2 categories. Mobile gamers (mostly female demographic) and online PC gaming (mostly male demographic)
2) Console gaming is mostly non existent
3) Brand awareness includes mostly Playstation and Nintendo (via their iQue brand)
4) Consoles, while banned since the year 2000, have been widely available in china's grey market since the PS2 era
5) Since the Wii generation most console owners, except for a small minority (similar to the small xbox hardcore community in Japan) just buy consoles for party games

Reasons why I don’t think the consoles in their current format will succeed in the Chinese market

1) Content. Most content found on current or next-gen consoles does not appeal to the Chinese audience.
Actually, the PS2 was released in China a couple of years back, but failed utterly to grab any market share from PC/mobile gaming.
2) Censorship. Most games released today would not see the light of day in china without being heavily cut. Which in turn would make the console a less attractive gaming format.
3) PC. Even with the right incentives (as in free content), it would take a long time, if ever, for gamers to migrate from PC to consoles.
4) Price/Piracy. Although most city dwellers can nowadays afford a console, why would they spend a large portion of their salary for games they can play for free on their PC?
Also, current consoles business model includes too much paid content. Chinese people are too used to get everything for free or for very little money.
For example, you can watch the latest American TV series for free and LEGALLY on Chinese streaming websites such as youku.com or sohu.com.

IMO, if Sony and MS hope to succeed in China they have to revise their business model from the ground up.

NB: Sorry for any mistakes. English is not my 1st language.

This, so so much.

The global business model of consoles, outside of maybe IGC is untenable in the Chinese market that sees almost no merit in paying for software.
