Contact lens problem. Has this ever happened to anyone?

I've been meaning to the doctor to check this out, but I haven't gotten around to it. And I've moved since then so I put it off even longer.

The problem started 4 or 5 months ago. I put my contact lens in both eyes like I normally would, and then later in the day, my right eye (and ONLY my right eye) would get blurry. Then maybe a day later, after wearing it for so long, it wouldn't stay on my eyeball at all. Whenever I would blink, my eyelid would pull it off of my eyeball and it got to a point where it became impossible to have it in at all.

So I figure that I need to slip in a new pair. So I throw that one way, open a brand new pack and put the right one in.

It only stays in focus for about 5 minutes -______-

So I figure that it'll adjust itself in a few hours.

It never comes into focus, and a few days later, it starts to slip off of my eyeball....like the last one.

So I figure that this set is just defective, and order a whole new set.

Same shit happens with the new set: Left eye is perfect. Right eye won't work.

This has never happened to me before. I've been wearing contact lenses for 14 years and I've never encountered such a problem. As far as vision is concerned, my right eye is fine. I wear glasses, and I haven't noticed any changes in my vision when I'm wearing them. So I figure it's probably my eye itself. Maybe it's warped =p

tl;dr version: Been wearing contacts for 14 years, and now, my right eye won't accept contacts lenses :(

Has this ever happened to anyone else? What did the problem end up being?

************************************

fake edit: I tried to self-diagnose through Google, and concluded that I had dry eyes...because my right eye HAS been kinda itchy lately....so I bought some drops. It solved the itch problem, but the contact lens still didn't work.

Also, I had my eyes examined right before I was issued my new set of contact lenses, and I distinctly remember my doctor trying to make me spend more money to buy a fancier (more expensive) pair of contact lenses. He said that they're "more comfortable", but I declined. Should I be suspicious?

I was going to suggest eye drops but you already mentioned it.

This is a long shot but are you putting the lens in inverted?

Did the optometrist measure the curvature of your eyes at all? Contact lenses do come in a variety of diameters and curvatures, but for your eyes to change like this after 14 years is odd. Maybe get a trial of a different brand and see if things improve.

happened to me after around 12-13 years
edit: curvature change, that is
did not experience what the OP experiencing

No idea. But they DID shoot puffs of air in my eye =p

But as for the trial thing: I was checking out the websites of some of the ones I see in commercials (like Acuvue). So I'l probably just try a new brand or something.

This would be my impression, too.

They're not inverted. And I just now just to be sure :)

I can't even wear an inverted contact lens; too painful. Plus, on your finger, an inverted lens has a different look to it, and I've only accidentally put one in maybe 2 or 3 times in 14 years.

I had a similar problem where they kept wanting to come out and felt uncomfortable. It was GPC(giant papillary conjunctivitis), which makes little bumps under your eyelids, thus pushing the lens out of place. It's very common. I developed it from wearing them for years and using those quick clean solutions instead of the kind where you put in that cleaning container overnight

The one that makes the bubbles/fizz?

Eyes do change in shape. It is called astigmatism. Get your eyes checked for that because if it has happened, what you think of as fine vision may be able to be sharper with correction for that.

I noticed that after about 13 years of wearing contacts, my eyes just started to act weird. They'd be completely fine one day and then other days I'd get a headache within 5 minutes of putting my contacts in and I'd have trouble focusing all day. I finally just got laser eye surgery so I didn't have to deal with all that bullshit anymore. Worth every penny.

I've just recently experienced this problem myself. I'm now unable to put contacts in either of my eyes, they just plop off straight away and refuse to stay on.

I only wear contacts for special occasions etc so it hasn't exactly been something I'm overly concerned with, but goddamn it's annoying.

I've been wearing lenses for 5 years now, never had anything like that. I occasionally had the difficult lens which wouldn't stay in place, but nothing which wouldn't be remedied by a new one. Maybe see your optometrist.

Came in to mention this, I had a case of astigmatism and had to change my contact lens prescription to suit the changing shape of my eyeball (had it in my left eye).

This shit is soooooo random.

I had 2 right eye contact lenses left. I opened it up, and the same crap happened (which prompted me to create the thread in the first place).

So for no apparent reason, I open the last one left, pop it in, and it works perfectly.

So I'm sitting there, pissed off and pessimistic, just waiting for it to go out of focus or slip off my eyeball or whatever. A minute goes by. Then 5. Then 10. Then an hour. And it's working like it normally would; I can see perfectly out of it with no problems whatsoever.

GodParticle: I was Googling GPC today and came across this from Yahoo! Answers: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110430114746AAwxQYK

This sounds exactly like GPC, Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis

It is very common among contact lens wearers, it's when the surface of the inside of your eyelids becomes bumpy when inflammed. I have this condition, it comes and goes. I can go for 6 months with no problems but then it resurfaces. If the inflammation isn't severe, it goes away on it's own.

Hopefully I'm in the "going" phrase. =p

I almost don't want to take my contact lenses out now because I'm afraid I might screw up whatever I did to make them work correctly :-/

That's only ever happened to me when I put the contact in inside out, but that's also accompanied by extreme pain, plus I doubt you've been making that mistake with each new contact you try.

I'd go ask your ophthalmologist.

Used to sleep in my contacts alot and had the same problem, went to the doctor and in the insidr of my eye lid had bumps on it, thats why my contacts wouldnt stay in place. He gave me some medicine and i had to wear my glasses for a while but it cleared up in a week or two.

Are you constantly wearing your contacts and not allowing them to rest by wearing glasses?

My doctor said that if you are constantly doing that your eyes may eventually reject the contacts.

I've been wearing contacts for almost 15 years. I've worn my contacts so much that whenever I try to put on my glasses I instantly get a headache. I think I just need a bigger frame though (cute, trendy square glasses don't do me so well).

What I'm getting at is that I've been experiencing symptoms like yours as well. Every time I blink usually the vision in my right eye will get blurry for a few seconds, but then start to clear back up until I blink again. I've never had a contact just pop out before though. So, the shape of your eyeballs could be changing, or you may just need to give your eyes more of a rest from the contacts.

I must be a mutant or something, I can wear those 30 day night and day sleep contacts for months by accident and have not experienced a single issue. Been wearing contacts for like 10 years too. Op, maybe its astigmatism, stress, or just a bad batch of that particular brand?

I have spells where my eyes are very dry and thus my vision is blurry. I've started wearing my glasses more and taking my contacts off earlier(like 6pm) if I put them in during the morning.

Also, a huge thing many people don't do is rub their lenses! When you take them out for the night, place each one in your palm, douse it with solution, give it a gentle rub, and then give it a spray again. This way you are putting cleaner contacts in to the solution for soaking overnight. I will also rinse my lenses before I put them in...sometimes.

Really? Shit, I've been wearing contacts for about 12 years, and I don't even own glasses.

I have dry eye syndrome, if I leave my eyes closed for too long (at least 20 minutes) then the contacts I'm wearing become ruined. Damn annoying. lol

I'd guess your eye isn't producing enough moisture. Has happened to me before where the lense just won't stick and wants to pop out. I found drenching my eye with solution while wearing the contact and blinking over and over fixes it and gets some of that solution underneath the lense creating the suction.

Wow, weird

I actually just stopped wearing contacts after eight years, because when I wore them, my right eye would get really red and I was able to do anything for a few days

I had something similar happened to me.

My optometrist found out I developed some allergies (like to pollen) and now I put in allergy drops every day before putting my contacts in (per her instructions) and it has disappeared.

Regardless, you should see your optometrist ASAP and talk to them. They'll figure it out for you.

Your conclusion is correct: you have a dry right eye.

The longer you wear contacts the higher the chance of this happening which most opticians will never mention (they want you to continue buying contacts after all).

Unfortunately, once you have dry eyes there is no cure and you have no choice but to stop using contact lenses. THIS IS IMPORTANT as continued wear will make your eyes worse.

I know this first hand because I have very dry eyes due to contact use and now I can always feel my eyes: they quite often have a light burning sensation and I've been told by eye specialists there is nothing I can do to improve them.

I was given drops but they caused further problems, I think my eyes became too reliant on them so I stopped using them altogether.

I strongly suggest you immediately stop using contacts for a period of at least 3 months, go back to glasses, and see if your eye manages to sort itself out.

Sounds like you have a scar on your right eye. I suggest you go see an eye DOCTOR (a in not an optician) and get it checked out.
