Contenders for best visuals in 2016

Too bad any and all games will lose to Cuphead.

There's waaaayyy too much chromatic aberration going on in this game. It hurts my eyes to look at it. I really hope they tone it down (a lot), because I do like the style of the game.

Even the menus in Persona 5 are gorgeous

That style tho. It actually makes me want to play Persona.

I don't agree with that at all, I think a lot of the visual punch that the Order has is diminished by the over use of post processing effects and the black bars, it's a great looking game don't get me wrong, but I still think Battlefront is on some next level shit.

Also note that when the first battlefront footage came out, there was a very small group who thought that was even possible. Then the game came out, proved many people wrong, while also running incredibly well.

Imo, aside from the character models and animations (which are spectacular btw) I don't even think uncharted 4 looks better than battlefront.

I'm gonna say fuck your GT and Uncharted and stat citizen and whatevs and nominate Dreams. Gorgeous, unique and the tech behind it is nuts.

In terms of art direction (which for me is always the most important factor than tech) :
Zelda U
The Last Guardian
Dark souls 3
World of Final Fantasy
Mirror's Edge catalyst
FFXV
Gravity Rush 2

I know OP clarified it but best visuals to me strikes a different connotation to what we're discussing here, at least when I first thought about it. I thought something more akin to the threads we have about game environments and individual moments. In this sense I hope Dark Souls 3 succeeds in this regard with some really cool locales. The leaked screenshot (spoilers)
with the bleeding sun is a good sign!
I guess I'm thinking of imagery rather than strictly visuals here.

Nothing will beat Uncharted 4 and Star Citizen.

Nothing.

And if something does... I'll eat crow and be one happy man to do so.

Uncharted 4, because it is the game that developers of other titles nod in agreement with.

It makes you go ooh aah when you play it and not just go oooh aah when you see it in a gif.

How do I know this, because Naughty Dog.

Technical: Uncharted

Artistic: The Last Guardian

It will take something special to outdo Battlefront and The Order.

The Order looked good, but still not as impressive as Battlefront, considering the console framerate and the fact that it was actually doing something gameplay-wise, rather than being an on-rails movie.

Probably not even as impressive as Syndicate or The Witcher 3, which are open world, massive, and great looking.

lololololol
what that has to do with visuals?

Uncharted 4, Quantum Break, and Ratchet & Clank have impressed me the most. All three are coming out in the same month, lol.

I'm sure it will have a huge draw distance, and play well, but Nintendo are definitely fans of the bullshot, and I expect this to be 720p with some rough post processing AA. Great art direction for sure, but not something I expect to fall under 'best visuals'.

Nintendo is fans of the bullshot? News to me. I mean, I know they've dabbled (mostly during the Wii era - remember Other M media?) but iirc all of the marketing shots for games like MK8, Smash, 3D World, Tropical Freeze, etc. were native res with zero touching up.

I'm just going to comment on consoles.

Technically speaking, to me the answer is far and away U4. Honestly I don't think it's even close. The reason being that when people compare QB, XV, Horizon, etc to U4, it seems to me people are only comparing the raw visuals. U4 doesn't seem to only have ridiculous good looking static visuals, but the combination of the visuals with the crazy physics that they showed, best animation ever, and amazing effects (fire, mud) just makes for an overwhelming technical package. Add to that the levels appear much larger than any previous ND game, and TLOU level AI, and the answer is clear to me.

Will The Order still have better raw visuals than U4? Will QB have some fancier effects? Possibly. I don't even think that's clear yet.

I think its the sum of all these technological parts that makes U4 blow other console games out of the water.

Edit: I should say I'm judging U4 based on the 15 min gameplay demo they showed. I'm assuming the full game will live up to that.

Cuphead, Star Citizen, and Quantum Break. Based off of my experience with Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2 I'll believe when Horizon and UC4 are running on my PS4 in front of me, I ain't judging now. Gears Of War 4 is also a pretty good bet in terms of amazing visuals.

You are forgetting about Quantum Break full scale physics and world morphing and also about its full real-time lighting when Uncharted 4 has baked lighting.
There is more to real time rendering than just the pretty cutscene, for example current Uncharted 4 engine couldnt make this scene:

Anything in VR will have the best Graphics. Simply because for once I will be in the world and see it for myself, instead of looking at it on a flat tv. HA! deal with it.

Quantum Break looks the most visually appealing to me because it combines art direction and tech in such a way that the end product ends up looking really unique and stunning. I don't think anything comes close.

Next up, Uncharted 4. It seems like it's going to be one hell of a technical accomplishment.

I value art direction over tech, so I'm definitely gonna have to list Firewatch, The Witness, and Unravel. Those games look gorgeous.

Also pretty excited for the PC version of Rise of the Tomb Raider. It looked exceptionally amazing on the Xbox One and I can't imagine what it'll look like in 1440p 60fps on my PC.

Then there's stuff like Horizon, Cuphead, Zelda U (might not come out 2016) that looks pretty great.

Oh shit, that was crazy.

I'll buy it at launch for Xbox One, but part of me hopes it's a timed exclusive like Alan Wake was.

I think each of the PS VR games will be potential contenders, not because they have the best graphics or art styles (I do really love RiGS's look) but because it will redefine how console gamers grade "visuals" from here on out.
