Convince me to finish "A Feast for Crows."

Alright, here's the deal. I love the first three books in the Song of Fire and Ice series.

But "A Feast for Crows" is terrible. I'm at page 362 right now, and I am not compelled to finish the book at all. The sections with Sansa, Arya, and Cersei are good, but they are few and far between, replaced with awful chapters dedicated to ancillary characters and Briene (sweet jesus her chapters suck). The next chapter is Briene's, and I don't want to read through it.

However, I do want to see what happens with Sansa, Arya, and Cersei, and I want to be prepared for A Dance for Dragons (which will hopefully NOT have crappy filler chapters).

My question is, is there ANYTHING compelling in the next half of the book that I should keep reading for? Some major plot development of any sort? Or is the second half a painful sludge of exposition like the first?

Honestly I think you can just skip Briene's chapters and wont miss a thing. Hers were really the only chapters that drug for me and nothing of importance really happens in them.

I really enjoyed the Dorne chapters(though I dont know why he didnt just make them all from Arianne's POV) and the Iron Islands chapters were good enough for me(though again why not make them all Victarion POV's).

Yeah, but is there anything really "big" that happens in the second half of the book? There's been some good development of Arya and Sansa so far, but I'm hoping for something huge to happen. (without spoiling it, please :D)

Big? Not really. Just some pretty nice set ups fo book 6. So I guess you could just read the last chapter for every character if you dont wanna go through the whole thing.

While there are some significant events that occur by the end of the book, A Feast For Crows is more about setting up the remaining books in the series, Brianne chapters (which I enjoyed quite a bit) and all. I'd suggest you stick with it, if only so you aren't lost when you come back to the series later on. That said, don't expect an epic finale.

Well, I finished it. I'm glad I did, although I do believe this is by far the weakest chapter in the Song of Fire and Ice. And I would definately say there were a few "big" events that made it worthwhile:

Arya going blind and Cersei's downfall were well-done. I also like that we end the story with three seperate groups on their way across the sea to find Dany and her dragons: The Iron Islands, Dorne, and the creepy guy at the Citadel. Speaking of Dorne, I thought the implied revelation of the intended marriage between Arianne and a Targaryen (Viserys?) was pretty cool.

Although I am confused about a couple of things: What exactly is going on with Pate at the end? Is that supposed to be an assassin from the guild Arya joined? Also, what does Petry mean about the war of three queens?

Martin says at the end of the book that he wants to finish A Dance of Dragons this year. He better :D

By the way, I don't want to create a new thread for this, but are there any good websites with artwork/wallpaper/animated gifs or what have you of A Song of Fire and Ice?

The appearance of Pate is the book coming full circle. If you'll recall, he is the original POV that started this chapter, in the prolugue.

Yeah, I know that. But it's not him. I'm just confused as to who it actually it is:

I want to say its Jaqen or one of his guild, but that's why I ask
:D

Damnit all. Did they really have to include a sample chapter from A Dance of Dragons at the end of A Feast for Crows?

The sample chapter from ADoD was better than anything in AFfC :(

Bah, my mistake, I read that as you forgetting who Pate was.

Here's a kickass site with portraits with all the major players up to SoS: http://amoka.net/eng/gal/

That site does kickass. I looked at most of those portraits, but didn't see one of Bran Stark. There was one of Rickon though. You think it's mislabelled?

I didnt think so. I've read summaries for Dany's first 4 chapters and they all seemed pretty "meh". Same shit over and over.

I think the worst chapters are with Samwell. Borefest.

Ironborne stuff isn't that great either. I would tend to agree that this book isn't up to the calibur of the others. It has a lot of info on people we couldn't care less about.

Hopefully his next book will be out this year and will be much better.

I have yet to read 'A Feast for Crows' but I can't imagine that it won't be good. I mean, there were so many excellent cliffhangers at the end of the third book.

The cliffhangers are still there after this book, well most of them. Maybe the next book where we get to see some of the cooler characters in the series (IMO).

I finished it a couple weeks ago, and it is the weakest of the four. But I still enjoyed it and I fully expect the next book to bring this one all together.

If you need convincing to finish this book, just ask yourself if you plan to read the next one.

I kind of liked the Samwell chapters
especially when he gets laid
.

I'm in the minority also because I like Brienne too, mostly because I want to see her succeed.

I agree the Ironborn chapters are a bit dull, and the Dorne stuff didn't do much for me either.

Man, I loved everything about AFfC. I loved the Dornish parts and the Ironborn sections were pretty cool too. It helps that I don't mind Brienne, but shit her POV was a nasty, nasty cliffhanger. :lol

I do not understand the Ironborn hate. Euron, Asha, and Aeron are all interesting characters. I love how mad yet calm most of them seem to be. And their sigil is a kraken!!!

My wife bought this the other day... I'm really worried that this series will Jordanize itself, and some of the comments on here seem to affirm that.

I'll read it next month when I get some time so we'll see...

Hey
Cersie got screwed at the end and that made it really worth it
.

I really think Martin read the history of every dumb ruler and rolled them all into Cersei, Jeez what a moronic bitch.
