Cool Nintendo Switch ads in Tokyo Station

Hmm... okie doke. Must have missed the yearly update threads. Part of my interest is simply to establish the margin by which Splatoon has exceeded MK8, not intending to suggest that there is any doubt that it has done so (wouldn't have any basis for that kind of suspicion, no clue about sales figures for Japan).

Yes it easily outsold MK8. During it's first 8 months on the market Splatoon wasn't even bundled with the Wii U as Nintendo Japan wanted to maximize profit from Wii U/Splatoon Sales. So initially there was an MK8 Bundle that you had to buy to get Splatoon and after that there was a SMM Bundle you had to buy to get Splatoon. It worked out pretty well since both SMM and MK8 ended up with a few more sales due to this tactic.
In the end Splatoon was hampered by the fact that consoles are dead in Japan but still ended up with 1.5 mil physical sales and somewhere in the region of 110-200k digital(estimation).
Now it's coming on a console that's also a handheld - so I personally expect it to sell 5 million copies minimum in Japan, over the course of it's first two years on the market. Simply put the game has a lot of room to growth and for Japan it's the biggest game you can advertise Switch with. It's the main game that will push online subs in Japan. Since Switch also supports local it's going to be a big hit among school children and will allow them to play it with their friends locally.

That prediction remains as crazy now as it was when you first made it. How many games have ever sold 5 million in Japan in history? I'm pretty sure the list is tiny. I don't want to say it's impossible but to expect splatoon to sell that much is unreasonable.

I could see over 2 million, 5 million is Dragon Quest on DS territory. I doubt any game in Japan will ever reach that.

There are 10 games that have sold more than 5 million in Japan.
There is no console game that has sold more than 5 million in Japan.
Highest selling console game is New Super Mario Brothers Wii for Wii with around 4.4M copies.
SMM 3DS sold a million in Japan for the holidays compared to SMM Wii U that sold a million in over an year.
Splatoon would have sold more if the Wii U wasn't in it's final year during 2016.
Splatoon 2 is going to be a summer holiday title in Japan. It will continue to get updates, tournaments, events and promotion during it's first two years on the market as a major driver of subs.
Splatoon 2 is coming out on a device whose form factor is much more inline with the way Japanese prefer to play games. It will allow for far easier demonstration of the game compared to the Wii U since you can play Splatoon with your squad on the go. There is going to be kids in schools and parks this summer doing LANs.
Splatoon 2 Japanese Trailer is already the 9th most watched video on Nintendo Japan in less than a month since the reveal.
Splatoon 2 is the system seller for the Switch it's bigger than MK8D and Zelda combined hence the rush to get a sequel to the game ready for the Switch's first year.
I do expect it to have sold twice the amount the Wii U version did by the end of 2017 so at minimum around 3 million. It's also the game that has had the longest legs in the legometer and only due to the sequel and Wii U being discontinued that it ended up exiting the chart.

It will be over 3 million by the end of 2017 and it will continue to sell - Zelda and Mario might be bigger drivers of adoption outside of Japan but in Japan Splatoon 2 is going to be the system seller and sub driver. Hence it will continue to get a lot of marketing from Nintendo for at least a few years. Especially as Nintendo does want to develop Splatoon 2 into an eSport game - much like Valve/Blizz this is going to be a game that continues to get investments and the current tournaments are just a taste of things to come. As Splatoon 2 is build around tournaments, spectator mode, streaming and community building - it will be a far more interesting prospect to predict.

correction. over 5 million is Pokemon and Super Mario territory. not even the best selling DQ crossed 5 million. not even the latest Pokemon main games have done that either (last one to do over 5 million was Black/White) and only 2 Super Mario games have crossed 5 million (original SMB and the first NSMB)

i can see Splatoon 2 doing 3 million but over that would be insane.

The vast majority of 5 million sellers were DS games. Non-pokemon games that have sold over 5 million in Japan: New Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros, Brain Training 2, Animal Crossing DS.

Pokemon games: Ruby/Sapphire, Black/White, Diamond/Pearl, Gold/Silver, Red/Green/Blue.

I think Splatoon has a shot at Monster Hunter/Mario Kart numbers (3-4 million).

New leaf sold over 5 million too I think.

Edit: Maybe not, but it was definitelly higher than Pokemon

Those are pretty darn sexy, I must say.

I finally caved last night and decided to preorder a Switch (neon, naturally), so I'm all sorts of giddy about this stuff.

The mario kart one is so dope. Which reminds me... why isn't a launch title?

Don't get me wrong I have it preordered, but with such a soft launch they can't ship a port of Mario kart? It's stupid. Just ship a straight mario kart port for launch and offer free updates with extra content.
This is absolutely not a "soft launch".
2M unit, heavy advertising including super bowl commercial.
It's anything but a soft launch.

I wouldn't call that a good ad to be honest.
I agree it looks terrible and you can't even read clearly the message in the middle.

5 million seller for a title that's going to be near a console launch with few installed base sounds bollocks to me.

Splatoon on the Wii U didn't exactly have a huge opening on it's way to being the biggest console game in Japan. It's actually poised to have a much bigger opening on the Switch than it did on the Wii U.
