The vertical parallax trick in DKC2 is a piece of magic.
I just got a cart of it yesterday. Seems alright so far. Haven't played it since back in the day.Not that GAF doesn't know already but that entire game is magic. Resolution aside that game still holds up today.
Chrono Trigger
Any games that use fancy chips ain't count. (Is this all that the m2 chip was used for?)
Vectorman
You should see it on the real hardware. That gif has lower frame rate.OMG! That is insane!

Every time I look away and back, it spins in a different direction!
Afterburner 2, an early Megadrive game with crazy levels of sprite scaling and rotation. So fast and smooth.

Isn't the Neo Geo technically 16-bit?
Isn't the Neo Geo technically 16-bit?
Nothing technically about it, its absolutely 16 bit.
Yeah there are a lot of cool effects in the games.
Had to make a gif from Red Zone:
24 bit powerWell, there aren't any Neo-Geo examples in the thread yet anyway...
Konami, actually. That's Axelay, which really deserves a sequel or remake.Early Treasure title?
More from another beauty...Tales of Phantasia is probably the best looking RPG in the 16 bit era. Shadows cast over the environment as well as light sources creating shadows on characters with water having reflections and effects.
I can stare at some of those GIFs all day.
Here's one from Probotector (aka Contra: Hard Corps) that simultaneously looks awesome and hilarious:
The weird part here is that I can actually hear the music in my head.
the image is still cool enough to postDon't have a gif of it but the mana fortress from secret of mana. Like a crazy light show all over the place.

ThunderForce IV had the coolest parallax I'd seen up to that point:
Ah, i remember loving this particular effect.
Everytime the parrot changed direction the screen would flash as the flashlight was momentarily in your face.
I remember hearing that they removed this flash effect in the VC version or something?
Not the best GIF, but Rocket Knight had these cool reflections.
