A man, believed to be in his twenties, is seriously ill in hospital after a car crashed and ended up embedded in a house in Suffolk.

Emergency services were called to Long Meadow Walk, Lowestoft, at about 01:45 GMT to find a red Audi TT had left the road and crashed into the home.

The driver was removed from the vehicle and taken to the James Paget Hospital with serious head injuries.

He has since been transferred to Addenbrooke's Hospital.

Three people were in the house at the time of the crash but no-one inside was injured.

Keith Shales, 66, who lives in nearby Cotmer Road, said: "When I got there and saw the car through the hole in the hedge I thought that looks serious.

"I've seen photos of cars going into people's houses before but from the pavement, through the bushes and the cars behind it - it was like a launch pad - it must have been for him to get that high.

"I reckon he must be about four feet off the ground, I've never seen anything like it."

Structural engineers are on site to inspect the property and police said the occupants had left the house while safety inspections continued.

Sgt Bob Patterson, of Suffolk Police, said: "Collision investigators will be at the scene today as we try to ascertain exactly what has occurred.

"At this early stage we could not speculate as to what has caused the crash."

The same thing happened to a house near where I live. They had to pull the house down in the end. It was just too damaged.

How the fuck did he get so high?

How fast was he fucking going to gain that much velocity @_@!

He had to be going some speed (in what would be a 30Mph zone) to skip over those cars and maintain enough velocity to pierce the corner of the house.

Guy was obviously going extremely fast. Work out your speed demons on a race track, not on a neighbourhood road.

Must have been going 40-50MPH right to shoot up like that right?

He bypassed the 2 parked cars, which is amazing

Notice the snow on the floor? Well in the UK we don't really get it very often so usually when we do get it we have a mixture of slippy-untreated roads and a bunch of morons that don't slow down to respect the conditions. I hope this lad gets better but stuff like this happens all the time when it snows in the UK and people never seem to learn.

See, there's 2 garages directly behind the cars. If they'd bothered to put them away they would just be a house down, not a house and 2 cars!

He was just going for a gentle cruise around the village and a leisurely pace and all of a sudden- a house came out of nowhere.

Seriously the guy must be a mess, if you're going to crash into a house the corner is not a good place. The drivers side of the car must be badly mangled.

Are you a federal officer of the law?

Wait. They have witnesses. He was drunk. He has a suspended license.

But he can refuse to go to the police station and is not under arrest?

Wow. Australia!

Ahh, was this because he was in a parking lot, and as it was private property, he was subject to different standards? That's the only thing I can think of.

But he still got a 600 dollar fine, 4mo of community service, and 3 yrs suspended license.

I think the laws were not definitive and needed to be clearly defined.
