They had three or four writers though, and were finally going to go for a deep story with an allegory to black friday?
Oops?
Ignoring the more obvious link to Dawn of the Dead, they hired that many writers to make a point that the first game already made with regards to consumerism and its impact on less developed countries. You can't make this shit up.
I'm starting to feel a little bad for DR4 devs since it's apparently not a bad game, but the shortcomings compared to the first one are undeniable.
I mean that maybe new consoles cpus could have an hard time running a game with advanced graphic rendering that has also the level of interactivity of Dead Rising. The new consoles don't seem to have a problem with all that stuff in the remasters.

All everyone needs to know is Capcom made DR1 themselves in Japan, then gave it to western studio Blue Castle Games (now known as Capcom Vancouver).
DR 2 was pretty good and resembled Dead Rising though
so I wouldn't try the whole 'Western studios ruined it!' shtick with that
I did not know this detail, terrible.Wait, you can't pickup random shit anymore in the new game?
Jeez they must have put a ton of work into the first game.
It feels like every time a game come out that is refreshing and fun developed by a Japanese developer becomes more bastardized as Western developers take over.
Dead Rising is the latest example but Silent Hill was one as well. You could argue Resident Evil followed the same path with the developers looking at the Western market appetite for MOAR ACTION BRAH!!!
Now it looks like RE is going back to its roots while DR will probably get another sequel similar to DR4 simply because it might sell well. Silent Hill has been a disaster since just after Homecoming and Konami dropping it like it hot because of Kojima.
I shudder if Dark Souls were ever to be made by a Western developer.
I wonder if this is an effect of focus testing. Like they probably ask to people if they care about these details and most answer that not.
A lot of these details can be quite time consuming and put them when most people don't care may seem like a waste. Also some of them can be attributed to different design philosophies, like the crowd control mechanics in DR.
Overall is a shame, but considering their vision of the series is normal they don't care about those things. Basically what I'm saying is not a case of "japanese devs are the best and western sucks!".

The problem is every step of the way they were saying 'We reached out to old fans. We wanted to appeal to Dead Rising 1 fans. We're bringing Frank back(which isn't as impactful as they think because they already did that twice). We're bringing Williamette back. But then the old fans were like 'this looks nothing like Dead Rising 1. This looks like Dead Rising 3.' They wanted to make a mainstream generic open world zombie killing game but they also wanted to rest on the merits of Dead Rising 1 because its the mostly fondly remembered of the series with the highest metacritic of the series. They wanted their cake and wanted to eat it too. They basically wrapped Dead Rising 3 in a cheap pandering shell hoping they would get both fanbases.
Had they just said 'this is a sequel to Dead Rising 3' I think a lot less people would be bothered by it. Because that's what it is. It's that continued direction. At this point DR1&2 and DR3&4 might as well be two different series.
It's the video game equivalent of the special editions of Star Wars.
Resident Evil 'going back to its roots' is ripping off a Western developed video game

First Dead Rising is such a polished and good looking game. It honestly holds up visually more than any of the others. Texture res is the only blemish. It's hilarious how garbage the rest of the games looked in comparison. Actual good art design and great use of color is absent. I still don't understand why the original Japanese team gave the game away to another developer.

If that's what the market wants, devs will happily provide it. I've seen tons of people saying they can't wait to try the series now that the timer is gone.I rather think of it as the industry going backwards.
I can't be the only one who actually prefers 4 to the original. I was always put off by the timed gameplay, even though I did almost beat the original on the Wii. I enjoyed that story more though until it started dragging at the end. I had a rental copy and gave up near the end and watched it on YT. Personally, I like being able to explore at my leisure and I like not having to be stressed out by the timer.

Well that's just the unfortunate side effects of video game writing.
They had 4 real writers though. Not Videogame writers...actual writers.
That shitty DR4 interview was such a goldmine.
I watched the first 45 seconds, could see what point it was making, hen skipped through the rest of the video doing the same.
At some point does it get funny?
Is there a freeroam mode in DR1? Something where the clock just freezes and you can wander around doing whatever you please? I remember playing it back in 2006 and being annoyed that I had this enormous playground but "NO FUN ALLOWED" blaring at me the whole time.

I hate myself for thinking this (and I did not even know this was the case beforehand), but as soon as I saw the difference in how the player character animated and how expressive it was and full of energy, and how stiff and dead looking the other game looked, my first impression was "Wow, didn't know DR4 was made by a western developer!"
Dead Rising 1 looks like a next-gen sequel to Dead Rising 4.
