Culdcept Saga Pre-order thread of Tators and love

I think this game is fast becoming one of my all-time favorite games, taking that top spot from Card Fighters Clash for the Neo Pocket.

I am geniunely and throughly entertained by this game. For a grizzled veteran jaded gamer like myself, that's saying alot. The last time I felt this passionate for a game was in the 90s on the SNES, my first time playing PSO on the Dreamcast, and my first few months of FFXI.
This game is truly special and the only one of its kind (maybe sans Marvel trading card game) on consoles.

Nintendo should get on putting Mario Party 9 online, stat!

I don't know why the fuck I chose the green/forest level first. I hardly have any of those cards. Stupid bitch beat me twice last night. The second time was a last minute comeback. :(

The inability to save a game mid-game is killing this for me. People online will drop too much due to this and I fear it will be a killer.

You can do that when you Vs. the Computer.

It wouldn't be practical to save an online game. Everybody would to meet up at the same time to leave where they left off, just not practical.

man... I am so playing online today... the reason I wasn't was because I was trying to get used to the cards, and new gameplay system... i believe I'm there now... but first I need to go study for my test.

if they drop they are switched out with an AI... so its not that big of a deal.

yep.... I figured that out right after, it took me around 2 hours to comeback but I did it:)

I don't understand why so many of you are afraid to get your feet wet online yet. It's like story - win or lose, you still get cards. I bet playing online even grants you better cards in some instances. Besides, it's more fun playing with people anyway (when they're friendly, give tips and explainations, and talk anyway).

A lot of those online matches go on way too long. I can see when we all build up our decks to use the bigger maps, but for the time being, the first 3 maps are all we should be playing, IMO.

How does the symbol system work? One guy I played with said it works like stocks, but none of the maps I've played give you any of it, and I'm only to Coliesum III so the story hasn't gotten into it yet.

Also, one more ?: Are the maps that can be chosen for online play restricted by how many maps have been cleared in 1PL mode by the host?

Finally beat the wind level. I got lucky and rolled a 1 right at the start and had some yellow creatures, then they casted holy word 1 on me so I could get a chain right there next to the castle. Even when they had casted Waste on me for two whole laps I could still win.
Favorite creature cards so far:
Avenger
Sir Gawain
Sword Princess
Tengu

always appear in the earth element match or just the third match out of the four? It is kinda pissing me off.

It must be the third of the four. I had to deal with her and Wangon or whatever on the Wind level, after I had beaten fire and earth.
I havent done water yet.

I'll get online today.

The symbols are stocks... i have yet to get to a map where you can purchase them... you want to purchase them early while they are cheap. Lets say you purchase red symbols. If someone places a red creature on the red space in the area where you purchased a symbol... the value of the symbols you purchased cheap just went up. If they level up the land and make it more expense the symbol value goes up as well. Its like real estate value rising. So if you land on a spot that takes a big toll you can sell your symbols to aid you. You also get a symbol bonus in mana everytime you complete a lap.

From what I've heard the maps arent restricted... you can change the lengh of the rounds btw:D

It really doesn't help when you do your two primaries first just because they were first on the list. Now that shithead and his blob walls are raping me, along with this dumb bitch.

Everything I know about myself tells me I'm going to love this game, but after watching the fucking opening FMV last night I immediately took it out of my 360. Why do they have to tack on some cliché bullshit narrative onto a card game?

Back to SoaSE until my mood lightens I guess.

good lord... just play the damn game.

I finally beat Colosseum 3 last night, and the next stage after. Looks like the game is going to open up to strategy pretty deep now with more themed boards. I am totally addicted to trying to either get repeats of my good cards after a finish, or discover new ones that are better.

Dude, I kind of enjoy the narrative, actually. Lighten up.

I talked to my friend on the phone about this game suggesting he get it and he said, "I'd have to be single to play that game." :lol

Yea, hitting that start button to get past cut scenes is such a pain in the ass.

I played 3 or maybe 4 games last night and no one left(even if they were losing) in every single game. This is to say not a gurantee that people will never leave the game(especially when they're losing) but I thought in 2 games someone would leave but they stuck it out.

It also helps that you play in games that have a reasonable TG/round limit. A 3 player with I think a 8000G limit (and a I think a 70 second round timer) last night for me took close to 2 hours though ._.

I just tried to get a match online and I couldnt find one. Maybe I'll try again later on. I just crushed Ticomon at Alcyon 2, after finishing the 4 elemental stages, by like 10,800 to 1,300. Saved a replay of that one heh

I seem to win the short matches that are 15-25 rounds first place, but when it's a longer match with bigger venues I get dead last.

I got owned by two guys who used mostly starter cards, and I had a lot of big guns.

We need an official thread now. This game is way past the pre-order stage.

If your getting owned by starter decks, you probably didn't build your deck the right way. The "right way" can vary by opponent, the board you play, the cost to play each card, color balance, etc. Randomness can be a factor but isn't as decisive overall as some people make it out to be IMO.

And some cards just don't play well with each other within a deck. You have to have a strategy in mind when you build a deck.

I know, but people don't have the patience to wait around while you re-arrange your deck. And none of us have played enough to build enough cards to make more than one deck, so...

Just re-title this thread instead of making a new one. Someone needs to make a hookup thread in online matchups, too.

Count me in on the bandwagon for the Culdcept avatar. I absolutely LOVE this game!

I would, but I can't seem to invite people to games.. Hmmm.. What's wrong? Do they have to currently be waiting in the lobby too?

Is there a strategy guide for this game? I don't want to spoil myself on strategies or cards, I'd rather figure that out for myself.. But it would be nice to see descriptions of what some of the properties of things are.

I have never played CCG like Magic or really any in videogames either but I went ahead and picked this up. It has been really fun but the Colisseum III board took me some Vs. card farming and then 3 attempts and I *barely* very barely won.

Maybe I'm just completely lacking in any kind of strategy? It always seems like the AI is borderline stacked against me which nearly made me launch the controller at my LCD out of frustration lol - sorry I just had to vent. This game is a massive love/hate thing with me but I keep turning it back on and plugging away.

Any tips at all for a total card game newbie?

well since you are new... try having a lot of spell cards. more spell cards than item cards for now. If you have a good strategy you can nearly beat the cpu everytime. Thing is it takes knowledge of the cards to have good strat.... so expect to lose quite a bit. I've only lost 1 match of my 10 so far. You will gain strategy as soon as your knowledge of the game becomes strong... I still make mistakes every now and then. I can't stress enough that there really isn't that much "luck" in this game. The game requires a lot of strategy.

Ugh... so I just spent three hours on one game trying to beat Coll III - and I lost by 50 points.

While I don't think this is too bad for my first try, three hours? Dammit. Save or no save, you should be able to edit how long that shit goes for. I though 5000 limit was high and then they went to 8000. Ugh. That seriously puts a bad taste in my mouth. I really like the game but with the amount of time it wants from me is amounting to having a kid.

I am on such a losing streak! It is terrible.

I can't beat that damn desert map to save my life. The AI is still soooo dirty in this one. I lost two games in a row where my high rent land got zapped and on the next turn the AI rolled right onto it and claimed it without a fight! BOO. I need more yellow cards. I barely have any.

Game locked up on me when joining my first game, which seems to be a kinda common problem. I guess they didn't catch all the bugs during the year+ we've been waiting. I rebooted and the game was still available. There don't seem to be many people playing online. But it is late on a Saturday night. I'm sure all the hardcore Culdcept fans are out partying hard. I lost so, so bad because I'd made the worst deck. I was in tears.

Second online game was worse. Cuz it was against this guy who was somehow using his Japanese save with the US version. Checking his gamercard shows both versions listed, 48/50 achievements on the Japanese one, not a single offline achievement in the US one. And there's no way he got the deck he had from doing just VS matches over the last 4 days. He had this awesome deck that was all spell cards that warped him around the board, with some spudfolk and one or two other greens thrown in. I came within a turn of winning, but before I could hit the western fort he used a spell that warped me to the castle and I had to go alllll the way around the board again. He was just toying with me! It was terrible. I am sure he had many laughs. :(

I like trying to pit my two opponents against one another. :D

Holy Word 1 works well for this purpose. Just wait until they get next to a big land and slap them with it.

This is really not true... I'm destroying the AI in this game.

Just got this last night. I'm getting my ass handed to me by the first level...but I keep trying. Think I've already clocked 3-4 hours...at least you get to unlock new cards when you loose though, so it's not a total waste of time, and I get a bit closer to the goal every try. I can see many late nights ahead.

Is there beginner strategy I'm missing?

try using lots of spells... more often then not beginners have too many items and monsters and don't know what to do with them so you have to throw away lots of cards.

I had a tough time finding a match after 2:30am on Sat. night. Kinda surprising, since it was easy to find a match at that time Fri. Oh well.

Got my first spudfolk too. Pretty awesome card. I'm kinda surprised it's an N card though.

Vampire has to be my favorite card so far.

take note of the colors of the cards(if you haven't already), monsters on specific spaces with the matching element get a bonus. Also adjacent monsters give a +10 STR each bonus to each other.

Other than that, just going to have to keep going at it. I guess a useful tip is to NOT invade a enemy territory when you know for sure you aren't going to get it as you'll be slapped with the creature summoning cost to go into battle and the toll at the end. Not sure if this helps but I remember I was doing this when I first got the PS2 version

Is it possible to have two cepters saved? My wife wants to play her own character and build her own card collection, but when we tried to make a new one it warned about overwriting mine, so we didnt do it.

Also, Rilara can eat shit and die.

The gaf hype finally won me over on this one and I picked up the very last copy at my local gamestop. Just beat Rilara, soooooooo good, soooo good. I encourage anyone with this game to add me to their friend's list.

Had my first blind match with somebody from Neo Geo.com. Pretty crazy stuff and you get to use rare cards you've never seen before.

I'll add you monkspider.

Too bad I can't play this much online during the week because of how long the matches are.

I posted about this earlier in the thread. I had the same problem, and the solution is very confusing. Your wife needs her own 360 profile. It needs to be the only one signed in at the title screen - if yours was logged in first Culdcept will only recognize your inputs. That's probably why it said something about overwriting your save. So sign your profile out, let her sign in by her lonesome and do what she has to do. Have her drop back to the main menu, sign your guy back in, and now you can do your thing in VS.

I've considered doing all this in advance of my friends coming over to play because it would cut down on the wait, but you can't edit your appearance or name after creation, can you? I really regret the stupid name I gave my guy. I wish I could change it.

C'mon, man. The AI zapping your monster and immediately rolling onto the now-vacant land is the big thing people bitched about in the PS2 version, and it's still there. Only the mellowest of dudes could go through that multiple times in one night and not start cursing at the computer for cheating. Sure, maybe it isn't cheating! But I'm never that lucky. :(

My frustration during one of those games was compounded by the other AI, which was in last place, not using either of its Holy Word II or Slow cards on the AI that hit the TG requirement and had to make half a lap to win. He had a full hand! He kept throwing out cards! But he wasn't casting any spells! Stop the guy who's about to win, you jerk!@# I swear those two were in cahoots. Stupid bigoted computer!

How long is the single player? I've cleared all the element maps now and wondering how much I have left.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I still got the 'escaped the Coliseum' achievement even though I used the suspend save during that match, so you can still earn story-related achievements while using suspend. I guess it just disqualifies you from earning the weird gameplay ones.

@$#@#$

There's nothing like smoothly coasting in first place with your newbie deck in your second multiplayer game, with two bad players and one good player

Then on your victory lap, the only good player in the game rolls exactly what he needs to land on your highest value land, and has exactly the right creature and item to exactly total the health of the defender, causing a 2000G swap and losing the game instantly, dropping from first to third place.

The power graph showed a nice smooth ramp up until the end where I suddenly plummet to third and he wins.

That pretty much sucked.

good lord I'm telling you its not as bad as the ps2 version... I've been playing the ps2 version straight up until the 360 release and the AI isn't cheap like that. Yes stuff may happen a few times but never ever ever anything like the ps2 version at least not yet.

The cheating is still there...but I agree, I don't think it is near as much of an evil bastard as it was in the PS2 version.

I had a TON of problems with the map after the coliseum III level...the one where you fight that puffy thing....Tico something? Anyways, he was a cheating bastard for four straight losses before I finally tweaked my deck well enough to squeak by him. I then proceeded to the water level which apparently has given folks lots of fits and proceeded to wipe the floor with her about 9500 to 1000.

Here are a couple quick questions for our pros out there: what percentage of monster cards do you recommend i use in my deck? Also, do you recommend concentrating on maybe two colors or spreading your cards all around all four colors?

early on... spread across all colors... when you build a sizable amount of cards focus on 2 colors and a few "special" non element cards. I typically use around 20-23 creature cards... the rest I put towards item and spell cards. I'm a defensive player so I like to have a lot of defensive type cards... things like attack first are great to throw your opponent off guard.

Ohhhh.. Get a Paladin then cast mutate on him, then level up the land. Nearly invincible:D Regenerate offsets the poison downside of the mutate HP bonus. Muahah this game rules

Thanks. This seems complicated and risky ;)
For now my wife has just made a Book on my profile and plays against previous levels. I have a few hundred cards now so it took her like 2 hours to put together her book :lol I guess when we play Vs we will just use blind decks.

I've started having more success with like 60% creature, 30% spell, 10% item. I'm sure that these numbers will be different for everyone based on what cards are available. I started off with only 5% spells because it took me forever to get any that were worthwhile. Now I have some good item destruction spells. I got one card that will destroy all items from all cepters. Its pure evil and fucks the AI hard, so based on that card I have decided to limit my items.
