Culdcept Saga Pre-order thread of Tators and love

God I hate that one green card with the paralyze effect -_-

Since then i've gotten one and put it in my deck but I don't have many "decent" green creatures to make full use of it(by full use I mean holding a green chain)

Anyway, I really hate how the matchmaking interface functions but it's better than nothing :s

50% is kinda the sweet spot for creatures early on, isn't it? Try and load up on spells that zip you around the board really fast. Or just spells, period. Items are great but you don't need too many.

good lord I'm telling you its not as bad as the ps2 version... I've been playing the ps2 version straight up until the 360 release and the AI isn't cheap like that. Yes stuff may happen a few times but never ever ever anything like the ps2 version at least not yet.
Oh, I trust you when you say it's better. I haven't played single player in the PS2 version in two and a half years, so my memory isn't exactly fresh. But it's still busting out the big cheat that lotsa folks bitched about in the PS2 version, and the AI is still wonky in other areas, so while it may be cleaner it still plays dirty. It's not like it's unbeatable or anything, and almost all my losses have been due to mistakes I made, it just has its annoyances.

early on... spread across all colors... when you build a sizable amount of cards focus on 2 colors and a few "special" non element cards. I typically use around 20-23 creature cards... the rest I put towards item and spell cards. I'm a defensive player so I like to have a lot of defensive type cards... things like attack first are great to throw your opponent off guard.

Thanks, I really appreciate the advice. i have been on a winning streak until stage three of the Colosseum. Time to grind a bit me thinks.

This one was my favourite. Won 11k to 2k ... :lol

Im stuck on Water map right now. Game went 73R and I ended last. Was a learning experience.

Online is hard to find, doesnt anyone play blind ranked? It seems that would make skill an important factor and would balance things out for people who don't spend time playing versus with themselves offline to "collect" the cards.

So any plans to set up a tourney? I would really enjoy a blind, 5000g, 20t tourney format 4v4 ... if anyone interested.

I was able to persevere and win Coliseum III last night. Having not played the PS2 Culdcept nor any other card-type games it was quite the challenge. I fell behind early as the bandit girl (forget her name) seemed to take every square in sight and her plethora of bandit creatures kept her in gold.

I had created a deck trying to balance creatures of different elements along with some spells and items. One thing I was able to do was lock down the stretch of board in the first area from the tower "north" to the dog-leg leading to the castle. This turned out to be key.

I wasn't able to get much going in the second area and the bandit girl seemed to own everything. What I was able to do was conserve some cash and I was lucky in that I didn't land in too many bad spots to drain my fortunes. The bandit girl did keep banging me with slow spells and holy word 1s that left me about a lap behind her and the champion.

For the entire beginning and middle of the match, she was far ahead in total gold. I was firmly in second place and the champ was struggling. However, as the match moved into the end game, I was able to upgrade that strip of prime property I had and it started to take its toll. The champ caught the bandit girl for almost 1,000 gold late but he gave a good chunk of it back to me as he rolled onto 1 square in my chain and then I used holy word 1 to force him onto the second square. Both the champ and the bandit girl didn't have many good creature cards left at the end either (or so it seemed) so that they didn't even challenge my tolls when they landed.

Somehow, at the end, I found myself up several thousand gold when earlier I had been down several thousand. It was a fun win - really the first time (by hook or by crook) that I'd really come from behind to win.

Congrats on the win, and what a great write-up UC! You can give detailed accounts of our tournament battles when we start having them, for our Hall of Champions!!! :D

LOL. Thanks. :D

So far, I haven't done any farming. Is it necessary to progress or are people doing it just to max out their decks? I have no idea whether I have a good card selection at the moment or not. Is there any resource yet that catalogs all the cards so I can see what I'm missing and compare with what I have?

Myself, as with most people at some in this thread, I'm stuck on the Coliseum III. I seen a few replies regarding advice, such as more spells compared to items, etc. I was wondering if there are any other tips.

Also regarding Land Leveling, when do most you level? Do you wait until you have a good chain going or specific creature that is quite strong?

On a side note, love the manual, very nice!

At some point I will be interested in playing online, just want to get a few more cards and games under my belt. My gamertag is SCHUEY F1

Then on your victory lap, the only good player in the game rolls exactly what he needs to land on your highest value land, and has exactly the right creature and item to exactly total the health of the defender, causing a 2000G swap and losing the game instantly, dropping from first to third place.

The computer did that twice to me on Saturday.

In the same game.
From the same AI opponent.
On the same lap.

Spend a fortune on a land to upgrade. Computer rolls, lands, wins, takes my land. Do it again next turn, he does it again next turn. Two level IV lands changed hands, I went from very far in front to very far behind on Coliseum III.

I quit after that and switched to Sins of a Solar Empire just to let the frustration drain. The AI cheats there too but it isn't so blatant about it.

I don't really have any advise but what worked for me was to concentrate on a few well placed lands rather than grabbing for everything that is out there. I was lucky to claim a nice contiguous strip of squares but I think that picking a few spots to level up and concentrate on is a good plan. There aren't any optional paths on that map so wherever you set up, the other players will have to pass through one way or another. Also, one lesson I learned the hard way, do not use an item when fighting a thief, she'll steal it. It was a lesson I learned the hard way! Thankfully, it didn't hurt me as much as it could have.

I'd love to hear what others do. What I've been doing is to level up spots that I've planted creatures that match the terrain, particularly if they're strong defensively. Wall of Ice is a friend of mine!

I agree. It was such a nice change to get a nice, thick, juicy manual for a change. It took me back to days gone by when the manuals that shipped with games were thicker than novels. :D

I wish companies would take more time with manuals :(

I also got burned by a thief as well. Another way I got screwed, which was my own fault is I changed my path when I crossed the bridge when I didn't one of the forts, so when I came back around the bridge took me back across to the other area instead of letting me turn to go to the castle. I had to work my way around again with very little magic.

I've been having an easier time now that I got more cards to work with. You really can't do anything about the luck part of rolls or what you or the AI/opponent draws but you can be smart about how you play and strategize. I played one game online and was just guffawing at my opponents. They would lay a creature everywhere they would land, regardless of land type and not manage their money at all. They would then be 2 or 3 rounds away from any fort or castle and not be able to play any cards or items in battle then have to give up land.

Then they would level up land with neutral or opposing land type creatures on them. And big time level up like 3 or 4. Of course I would swoop in and grab the land since they had no HP bonuses. In other words don't play loose with laying creature cards, especially in the beginning when you don't have much cash to play with. You can't afford to do that plus strategically its stupid as all hell. Also see where people land alot and try to grab land right before or after forts and castles and make damn sure the creatures get land and chain bonuses. Level up those lands first and try to buff the characters. Attack first helps alot too, at the beginning and middle of card collecting Lizardman and Vampire make wonderful land sitters.

Your opponent may have twice as many lands with creatures but that lizardman sitting on level 3 land will pay off after awhile. Especially if you keep an eye on opponents hands and learn to use holy words the right way.

Thanks. I think in some cases I was spreading myself a little to thin. I would match the territory with the creature though.

Love the Lizardman!

I don't know what it is about him but I always keep at least one in my deck. It's not that he's all that powerful and you do get better cards. He's just always been lucky for me and always kicks ass in just about every situation.

Centaur is a great alternative to Lizardman too. It has the same stats + attack first, but it will recycle items to your deck so if you use a sword or armor or whatever, you will get to draw that card again soon most of the time.

I'm no expert, but what works best for me is putting a really strong creature card on terrain that it matches up with and then level up the land as quickly as possible. It's just about impossible to lose it.

Don't attack everything you land on or esle you may end up paying out more if you lose. Sometimes it is best to pay up on the cheapo lands and just target a few lands to attack. Years ago, I had to learn that the hard way.

What kind of downloadable content is out in japan anyways? i'm wanting to know what to expect. :D

I asked that question... all the downloadable content that the japanese got is in this version of the game... so we got all the cards except 1... which was a preorder bonus.

I just ordered this game today; played the demo a liked it a lot. Seems like a perfect game to play while listening to a podcast; almost like a pick up and play for an hour or so.

That's what I've been doing. Although I often don't have the luxury of having a really strong creature in my hand when I start, I'll try to swap one into the land as soon as I can.

Well then. I'm glad I got this handy dandy mini strategy guide that actually is just a cliff notes of the instruction booklet that came with the game instead of a special preorder card. No really, i'm happy with that, just ecstatic.

You have a good strategy, but I don't stick so closely to the land/creature rule. I always focus on getting chains first, because a chain will raise your land value considerably at higher levels and will be harder to come by in later rounds. So I have no qualms about dropping a neutral or off-color creature on a land just to increase my chain. It doesn't cost me much since I usually use relatively cheap creatures and instead rely on items and spells to defend my lands.

More often than not, nobody even ends up landing on my unprotected (mismatched) lands, so the element isn't an issue. However, as you mentioned, I never level up a land until I have a decent creature of the corresponding color sitting on that land. For the first few rounds though, I'll usually drop creatures every single turn if I can and then swap them out or change the terrain later as necessary.

For me the order of importance goes something like this:

chain > land level > G (in hand) > symbols

Of course, that varies depending on the map and the situation, but so far the single-player campaign hasn't given me any trouble at all. Not to be a jerk to all the people who have been having trouble, but I think this game has actually been way too easy so far. I'm not very far, but I beat the wind and fire levels, and I have the water level coming up next. I haven't had to do any card farming and I haven't lost a match yet.

Here's a tip:

Use the Hellitic if you have it. It's a 20ST 20HP red creature that has a territory ability that does 20 damage to a target creature for 60G. I've been killing the AI with this card, just using its ability every time I pass it or land on a fort. Of course, all it takes is a Magic Bolt to silence your Hellitic, but I've taken a few level four and five lands just using Hellitic's ability.

Having some fun with the game, although the cheap comp play gets a bit annoying at time. Finished off the Colosseum III match last night after two tries. The first attempt I was still using the "Starter" deck, but saw that I was clearly outclassed very quickly, so I created a new "Balanced" deck to upgrade my critters and add new items. I was able to work some nice strategies as well. Having played a lot of Magic the Gathering helps to form some ideas for sure.

As for the cheap play I mentioned, it ticks me off when a comp will greatly upgrade his land that happens to be, oh say four spots in front of me, and when my turn rolls around I just happen to roll a "4"! Wow! Go figure. I also tend to have a lot of games where I roll a 1-4 most of time, with an occasional 5-8, while the comp players roll a 5-8 most of the time, and occasionally roll a 1-4. Usually when it helps them land on the most opportune spots on the board. I'm often nearly a lap behind it seems. It's quite frustrating in certain games when everything goes the comps way.

I have a dilema tonite. I wanted to get some time in on this game, but Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles is on @ 8pm. What to do? It's on at a really inconvenient time that would break up a match. Do I wait to watch it till tomorrow and risk them not having it on TV links? Do I record it and watch it some other time?

I found the solution:

IMG_0441.jpg

:lol :lol :lol

Hook up a mini-color ghetto-ass TV and do both! It's not like you need total concentration on the game while you play, right? I would have loved to stack it on top of the other TV ghetto style, but it would sure as hell fall off.

Edit: I love the banner ads for this thread
Wiccan
Pokemon
:lol :lol

I'll make a online hookup list for this game later in the week when I have more time since nobody has done it yet.

Woo hoo, i finally beat Colosseum III. It came down to who would get to the castle first, me or markt and thanks to some strategic use of haste, it was me. :D

Here is another question for you guys. I got this awesome rabbit guy named Domovoi with an oversized hat and an axe that is a rare card and has a territory ability to add "phantasm" to target territory. I can't see anything in the manual about what the heck this does. I really would like to add this guy to my deck just for badassery if he is any good.

I think in the PS2 game a creature with phantasm couldn't be hurt by spells like Magic Bolt.

I believe the in-game help has descriptions for every status ailment. On the second page of the Table of Contents. Enchantment Effects. Lists the type of enchantment and in parentheses the name of it. Phantasm is listed under HP Unchangeable. "The creature's HP cannot be altered by spells and territory abilities."

The help's surprisingly well done. I just wish you could access it from book edit. Or can you and I've missed it?

EDIT: Just checked the manual to see if it has a status listing, and all I could find was a list describing what all the status balloons mean. Which is still pretty nice. It's a very impressive manual. All color, very attractive, looks like it has tons of info. Not sure about the quality of the info, since I haven't read it, but I assume it's on par with the in-game help. Which means it's the best manual I've seen since...I dunno, this century? And for a 'budget' game. Namco Bandai have their good points!

Cool, good to know. I could see that being pretty handy with the right strategy since the bunny lets you cast phantasm on ANY territory.

Here is a little tip in return since there seems to be an utter dearth of info on this game on the internet so far. You can unlock a pretty sweet ninja mask for your character if you manage to win a match without paying a single toll. I find that this is quite feasible to do on the first map once you get some better cards.

Just a little bit of misc info just in case someone didn't know.

Pressing Y while you are selecting creature cards will zoom in on the 3-d model. You can press the left and right triggers to rotate the model. Also, if you press the X the narrator will say the creatures name.

ooo thanks... I really wish this game had a real guide... it seems the game has secret achievements like the ps2 game... but they don't count towards any points.

There's actually a running thread over at gamef*qs about unlock requirements for all the Cepter Parts. I think they've figured out about 75% or more of them at this point. Even though I don't post there, I think most of the threads for this game are civil and some are even worthwhile :D

I've been dominating the PC with a cheap little red deck. It's mainly built around Coaloids and that lizard with the ability to nuke everything on the board not fire. It's a beautiful thing, and I usually end games with the ai sub 1k tmp. I've also got a couple of cheesy neutral cards in there for good effect, that hybrid fallen angel is a great attack card.

Also: In any of the card menus you can hit RB to change the display and see some flavor text + explanation of all the abilities on the card, including all enchantments. Those domovoi's rock ass with the flame wheels that get +30/30 or w/e in combat on an enchanted land.

So when is supposed to arrive at PAL Land? someone posted something a week ago but cant find it and there is no sign of it coming at any shop.

I've been spamming Coliseum II with an all-Air deck for the past couple of days, but I still haven't gotten my collection back to the point where I could construct books around random suicide trips, setting monsters on mismatched lands that belong to monster types they nullify, and idol-ing the system entirely out of whack like I could on the PS2 version. Bleh. I guess I should just make do with what I have for now and build an honest book so I can go online and cause grief.

Fans of the last game will remember Kelpie....................I just got two of those for winning a match. :D

Kelpie makes all cepters land on it as they approach. The trick is to summon Kelpie on a blue land you upped to a good high level. Slap on a buff spell and rake in the cash!

Perfect for those long boards that aren't set up to generate a lot of mana.

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of that gamefaqs thread. Here is a list of everything that is known at the moment. You can unlock some pretty sweet stuff in this game! A lot of these look like they will be good side goals to shoot for when grinding. Apparently there is also a way to unlock new character models, like female models, demons, birdmen, and so forth.

That mummy mask sounds ridiculously cool, but correspondingly ridiculously tough. Can anyone imagine any rules variations that might make 90 freaking thousand feasible?

can anyone comment on how this game compares with the ps2 game? I still have a ps2 culdcept that I got for a few bucks, but didn't spend any time with it

It's like the ps2 game but much more balanced... some great new additions to change strategy up, a whole new set of creature cards that have 2 land effects... pretty awesome.

Monkspider! thanks for the awesome list man!

Fans of the last game will remember Kelpie....................I just got two of those for winning a match. :D

Kelpie makes all cepters land on it as they approach. The trick is to summon Kelpie on a blue land you upped to a good high level. Slap on a buff spell and rake in the cash!

Perfect for those long boards that aren't set up to generate a lot of mana.
kelpie can be terminated quickly though if the user isn't careful
