Cuphead |OT| 2 Cups 1 Screen

After taking some time off after I beat it then returning to it, this game really nails one of my favorite attributes about arcade games: feeling extremely difficult on the first play through, but seeming much easier on the second play through.

After my first play through with 348 deaths, I really didn't think I'd be able to A rank much of anything, and definitely not easily if I could. But I've managed to A rank all the stuff in the first two worlds with very little challenge, and haven't even needed to rely on Charge much.

Feels really good to only need a few tries on each boss, when the first time through many took dozens upon dozens of lives.

So there I was, fighting
Phantom Express
on Expert, while raging about the randomly-moving platform that always seemed to keep getting in my way. An hour or two later, I remember that no, that platform doesn't move randomly at all,
the pink bricks and skulls can move it.
How embarrassing.

Aye lmao.
One of the easier fights on expert too.

Currently trying to finish everything on Expert. The plane levels are by far my biggest weakness. I'm not really a shmup player.

You can also move it yourself by parrying on it.

Yeah the difficulty to rank S on those levels compared to the regular bosses is exponentially harder for me.

Ordered a cuphead tshirt from yetee. This game is too magical for me to not support it in more ways than one. You can tell the dedication and love that went into this game!

I'm going to start speed running it as well, which I haven't done with a game since I set records in punch out wii back in 2009.

Is it me or is the
donkey section
of the roller coaster fight way fucking harder than anything else in this game so far? It feels like way too often I'm in a position where there's nowhere safe to go

Finally beat it 14 hours and 401 deaths later (along with countless restarts).

Hardest bosses for me: (SPOILERS)

Robot
King Dice
Dragon
Devil
Bee

Also, those shoot em' up sections. Did not care for them.

With the donkey all you gotta do is stand a little ways in front of him. Either he spits the arcing ones which will miss or the straight across.

Last night I went back to play some of the early bosses and I had much more trouble with Goopy Le Grande than most of the Isle 3 bosses. Maybe it's just the way my brain works, his patterns have some built-in randomness to them that are annoying if you're moving in close to nail him with the spread.

Just King Dice and the Devil left now, you guys are making me shake in my Cuphead-esque clogs. I've given KD a quick handful of attempts and I'm afraid I'm in for quite the grind.

Some tips for the
Casino bosses!

Space 1 (Tipsy Troop): Kill the shot glass first. His attack is super finicky to dodge. Don't fret about the martini, she can only spawn two olives at a time. The whiskey bottle is simple, just sidestep his geyser attack when you see him move. Probably the hardest of the first three bosses.

Space 2 (Chips Bettigan): Chips is a simple fella; he'll just Shuffle himself back and forth till one of you dies. If you have the Smoke Bomb, this is a free win, essentially. If you DON'T have it, you can duck all but the lowest chip in his stack. Just note that only the blue chips take damage.

Space 3 (Mr. Wheezy): Another great use for the Smoke Bomb. Stay on the ashtray opposite Wheezy until a fireball is about to hit you. Run away until you hit the edge of the screen, then jump the fireball when it's low. When Wheezy teleports, get to the other ashtray immediately. The Smoke Bomb will let ya dash through the cigarette bats. Wheezy is a huge target; you can't miss him as long as you're facing him while firing.

Space 4 (Pip and Dot): Probably one of the hardest rogues in this gallery due to their spiky treadmill. Focus on survival and jumping those spikes. They have two attacks: a seagull that flies from behind and a D20 that ricochets across the screen. They're a big target, so just shoot as you dodge and they should go down soon enough. Try to avoid this space if possible.

Space 5 (Hopus Pocus): Tricky without the Smoke Bomb, pathetic with it. He has two attacks: a rain of card suits that can only be dodged by parrying the hearts, and a circle of skulls with a gap in them. With the Smoke Bomb, you don't even have to wait for the gap to open, you can just hop out of the ring. Cakewalk of a boss, try to land on him if you have the choice.

Space 6 (Phear Lap): Your primary opponent is the foreground; it obscures the action regularly. Phear himself has one attack: a large present that explodes into a ring of horseshoes. Just weave through the gaps. Watch the horse racers below: any jockey in blue will jump after you at blazing speeds. Another of the trickiest bosses in the Casino, in my opinion.

Space 7 (Pirouletta): Once again, Smoke Bomb is your friend. Her attacks are stupidly easy to Smoke through. Without it, Parry the chips to give yourself temporary platforms to dodge the dance and cover to avoid the roulette balls. Pretty simple to be so late on the board.

Space 8 (Mangosteen): He's a joke. He has one slow moving projectile that is obviously telegraphed. More dangerous are his chalk block pals. Just stay away from em and plug away at the 8-Ball's health. Probably your best choice of the three last bosses.

Space 9 (Mr. Chimes): The hardest Casino boss barring KD himself. Match two cards by Parrying them to make him vulnerable. Once enough damage is dealt, he becomes invulnerable and more cards must be matched. He speeds up if an incorrect match is made. Chimes suffers a strange bug in which he sometimes simply leaves the battlefield, handing you a free victory. If this happens, just smile and nod.

Fin (King Dice): Good luck. Parry his cards and don't panic. Try not to stand under his hands after rolling Fin; the battle starts IMMEDIATELY, and his dropping hands can and will kill you before the fight proper starts.

Just played this for the first time at a friend's house. We played for about 5 hours, beat the second world.

I really did not expect how magnificent this game was going to be. It hrabs me like most games don't do these days. Truly spectacular in so many suprising ways. It's the first game to make me wish I had an XONE.

For the final world, how can I tell if i beat a boss on expert mode? I noticed the other bosses in other worlds get a star on the list
. Probably missing something obvious lol

The problem most have is if the train and golden donkey align in such a way that staying on the ground will let the train passengers hit you but jumping will let the shots hit you. Only way out is if you have the smoke bomb dash and time it right so that you simply pass through the passengers and have enough time to position yourself in the gap between shots.

I got the Genie down up to the Marionette stage, the tiny bullets the hat shoot out get me though.

Also for some reason I play better if I turn down the sound and watch a show or stream on the side haha.

What are those pink things fired out by bosses? I just jumped and avoided them.

I can't be the only who was rapidly pressing the fire button when holding it down does the same thing.

Did you skip the tutorial?

They're parries, you can parry them to gain super meter. Anything pink can be parried.

The flag will have a gold cup when you beat the level on expert. Silver for normal.

The pillars in the genie level giving me the most trouble now haha, not the blades but me bumping my head because both D-Pad and analogs sticks have a tough time moving pixel by pixel.

That's the problem, I'll get there and then the train arrives and I can't dodge through its nose
Make sure you're paying attention to the background. You can see the coaster coming in the back a few seconds before it arrives. It definitely helps. Also, it's tricky, but if you get into a position where you need to get on the coaster while the yellow horse is spitting the horseshoes, you can jump and dash mid-jump to avoid getting hit. It's super-narrow, but doable.

Also, if you haven't already, invest in the spread shot. I think, with two exceptions, I beat the entire game using only the spread shot and the pea shooter.

As long as we're requesting features, I'd love an option to turn off the foreground in the airplane level (or at least make it translucent)s. So many times I've gotten hit by an enemy or projectile that I could never see because it was obscured by stuff in the foreground.

My first real attempt at fighting KD, I parried the first set of cards...and then he got stuck in his animation and didn't do anything else and I was able to kill him (also got the achievement for beating him without getting hit for it). Anti-climatic, lol.

Did one level to get an S rank. Don't think I'll bother trying for Expert. Doubt I'm good enough for that. Maybe I'll try to get the rest of the A rank achievements. Final death toll was like 1000+ (mostly from trying to play the game in co-op and getting destroyed).

Already got 1000 but I wanna get the last achievement too. All P ranks.

This shit harder than anything else in the game for me though and I got all S ranks on expert. I can’t even do the two levels on island I.

Got through World 1 yesterday. Such a damn good game. Despite being absolutely terrible at this sort of thing, like Dark Souls (I know, I know), I never felt like it was insurmountable. The complete lack of any real 'punishment' for dying definitely helps, if I had to go through loading screens or go back to the map after dying/restarting I'm not sure I'd have been able to endure as many deaths as I have (around 60 now). Beating that damn flower boss was one of the most exhilarating feelings I've had playing a game in a long while, I must say. GG MDHR, GG.

Also, any easy way to get a Switch pro controller working? I'd like to play some co-op and no way am I putting down £40 on another PS4 controller or, worse than that, playing with the keyboard.

I’m stuck on the second world. Can’t beat any boss there but I’ll keep at it.

The game continues to be wonderful, beautiful, satisfying and frustrating all at once.

Island II is definitely harder than most of III so if you can power through it you’ll probably have an easier time to beat the next couple bosses.

Especially on expert Wally Warbles took me like 3 hours to S rank.

Thanks Lima!

I’m going to treat this like Furi. I won’t necessarily go for the 1000 but I really want to beat it on the normal difficulty. With Furi I beat it on Furi difficilty - was so satisfying. Hoping for the same with Cuphead.

King Dice
was a nightmare for me. Finally beat him last night.

Tried the
Devil
many times before calling it a night. That second section after
you jump down that hole
is a nightmare especially after
the platform on the left falls down and the other enemies spawn.
I couldn't get past this section. Dying to try it again after work. Maybe I was just tired from playing all day.

Any tips or suggestions?

Last weekend aced the game in A+ and currently have 900/1000 points finally. Time for the Expert run and i just bested the Devil but was not able to pull an S rank, so i went to the first island and killed Groopy with the S rank. Man this game is fun.

Question, do we get something if we do all S ranks? (other than the achievement which is only for beating the game in Expert mode)
