CVG: Sony to reveal PS4 VR Headset at TGS

This will be hard to sell to mainstream unless the price point is right on target. At $300, its acceptable, but if they gave it to PS4 owners at $200, it should really take off.

People should stop assuming this has anything in common with the HMZ. This was a radically different approach and technology. Sony saw the Oculus. They won't release a 800 device weighting 3 times more lol. I mean.. i hope :p

Any idea of the cost breakdown of the HMZ?

Considering it's a very specialized proprietary display, there's no way to tell. What we do know is that the reason the Oculus Rift is so cheap is because it's so simple. It's a mass manufactured mobile display paired with simple lenses and a motion sensor.

Not crazy about this idea.
I have very little interest or even none at all in VR gaming. :-/

Well thats the wonderful thing about a console with options and not having a peripheral forced onto the consumer. If you're not interested then you don't have to pay for the device up front with the console, it isn't tacked on. It's a win-win situation if true.

This gets my

wow, so this confirms why Bithell took his oculus rift to PS offices like 10 months ago; and that Dan tweet... Damn, i think Sony is partnering with Oculus if not buying it...

MEGATON.

Well, this is interesting. If it's as good as OR and around the same price this could be big.

Then just ignore it. It won't be required.

Well I hope so.
Would hate to have a game come out that I would love to play, but be on a gimmicky device like this. (Can't even believe I'm using this term after I've disagreed with hundreds of people calling the Wii a gimmick as one example. :-/ )
Crimson Dragon for Kinect immediately comes to mind as an old school Sega fan. :(

The hell?
Stop getting upset over nothing.
Games will be made specifically for it just like there were for Move etc.
But this will not take away from the other games you would have been playing if the headset did not exist.
I cant believe you would get worked up over something that hasn't even been announced.

The one sad thing - my most wanted game for this would be a real Elder Scrolls game, but they seem to be focused on that lame-o looking online one for the time being :(

Interesting. I am definitely intrigued by vr since everyone who tried OR is amazed by it and if Sony can prodice something similar I am all for it.

Guarantee they've got their own prototype kicking around. They could always partner with Oculus Rift too.

It will be a harder pill to swallow though imo because they are already forcing one accessory on you.

Sony has forced nothing so getting an optional add on of your choice doesn't sound too bad.

Bethesda is making TES VI in secret. Zenimax Online is doing TESO. They aren't making the BioWare mistake of calling TESO "TES 6,7,8,9,10".

Mike Bithell tweeted about this news today and said Volume already has OR support maybe someone can post the links?

Mhh interesting,

another hint for OR would be Sony Online Entertainment. They have hinted OR support for Planetside 2 and Everquest next like with this:

Planetside2:

http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/1jqq6j/sony_is_working_on_oculus_rift_integration_in/

Everquest Next:

Would sound stupid if you need different devices to play Planetside2 and EQN in VR on two different Platforms (If EQN comes to PS4) ^^

I really don't see why Sony needs to do this. Why waste R&D finances on a VR headset that will more than likely only work with the PS4. If the Oculus is a success, which I hope it is, I'm not going to buy a dedicated headset for the PS4.

MS & Sony should just make the Oculus compatible with both next gen systems, plus it'll work on PC as well.

Famousmortimer in the other thread basically it is NOT the Rift, and Sony's VR kit has been in development before the Rift was announced.

Being he has been good on Sony info, I think everyone needs to check their "Rift Hype on PS4." This is going to be a Sony based, proprietary technology.

I would use it all the time. Might actually get me into fps mp.

I read a Kotaku post, one of their writers had it on for hours. The results, as he said, were cool at first, but it does not work for hours for the mind and body. He did complain about a few gameplay control quirks that may have contributed. Either way, don't expect it VR, even in it's current state to be a flawless experience.

I can't help but think this is the device that will finally break Sony's positive run since E3. I don't think Sony understands why VR never worked before and how to resolve it in the way the OR team did. HMZ revision 3.0, nice and light, super pretty OLED, and still a boat load of lag.

Oh man, this could be HUGE.

It could also fall completely flat on its face if it's nowhere near as cool as the Oculus Rift.

Plus, we need to know price, if there's positional tracking, resolution, etc.
