Turned it on about 20 minutes later...

If you're referring to the recent shipment of defective consoles, then it should only be a single red light for the HDD error.

The system is fine with what it offers software wise. He's had it for only 3 hours so his warranty in store is still there so he can go back and return it for a new one. The money was well spent...what else did you want him to spend it on?

I plug it all in, put my Wii back into its box, and turn it on only to realize I won’t be able to take it online because of cable issues. I turn it off and search around for a PC Network card, before I realize I can just go online later and play Crackdown by myself now.

This happens all of the time with consumer electronics. People get bad TVs, computers, iPods, cell phones, etc. It's not a big deal to run down to the store and swap it out. It doesn't become a giant pain when you can't just run down to the store and swap it out.
