Dark Cloud 2 / Dark Chronicle |OT| A Picture's Worth a Thousand Gilda

Got to the forest dungeon or whatever, and it's getting kinda tough for me. I think it's because the combat is kind of stiff/basic. But yeah, status inducing enemies. And huge enemies that you can only kill with the robot, but the robot has 0 health.... Shit.

But yeah, 2 or 3 hits from an enemy really fucks me up.
It's not really that the enemies in Rainbow Butterfly Wood are much more challenging than thone found in the Underground Water Channel, it's more that these enemies just require different strategies to beat. I.e. walking up to them and attacking won't really work other than Monica vs. Himarra.

I would recommend guarding and throwing the skeleton nights, using the back flip against the plants, and investing in the Ridepod water cannons for taking down the tree enemies.

Loved this game when it was first released on PS2, now started to play it again and trying to remember best practices for weapon upgrades.

If I'm not looking to get perfect weapons yet by leveling wrenches for synthesis and just want to play the game fairly 'normal', but still get most out of the weapons... Would it then be best to level each weapon to about +5 / +6 before using 'Build up'? And just use crystals for the required stats?

Are you sure you have all the health- and defense-increasing items so far? You can pick some up in tiny chests next to Donny's tent, outside Cedric's shop, and there's one at the street corner across from the police station as well. They definitely make the second dungeon easier, and are sorta hidden.

Also, you can bring Cedric along with you to heal the ridepod (only once) and he can repair it by the train for free. All together, it's enough of a lifeline to get you through the early parts of the dungeon, but I agree, the difficulty spike there is pretty bad.

Is there any way to full screen this game? Its weird playing a cobsole game in a window on my tv.

Otherwise tge game is as fun as i remember it.

Each weapon has a max limit it can achieve in any of the elemental stats, so even after you meet the requirements to build up to the next weapon, you can continue to level it and boost its stats until it hits that cap, then you can build it up to the next weapon.

Spoiler for Sindain

I just looked up how to restore Jurak's Branch. Build a fence around the dwarf house and have someone live in a straw house?? How was I supposed to figure that out on my own? Once the second branch of this dungeon opens, is that when they tell me, or is this supposed to be trial and error?

I just called it quits half a dozen hours in. The story/characters/world are completely uninteresting so far and I don't think there's any way I can force myself to play more of the combat. The nostalgia was astoundingly powerful on this one. I can't even imagine what it would be like to go back and play DC1 now.
You've got way more patience than me, I just deleted it after trying to put up with the combat for only 2 hours. Maybe it's not fair to judge the game based on that little amount of time, but I genuinely cannot stomach the combat.

You have an unfinished path with geostones you have to come back to get

I find myself liking the combat a bit more then last time I played it. Different enemies do require different strategies. Also that pause when switching characters does start to get annoying.

just an fyi in post game you can get killed in two hits, bwahaha I love this game! You have to master spacing dodging and blocking at the right time for sure.

My tactic is to go up to to enemies as Max, keep circling around them until I'm facing their back, hit R3 to Even The Odds, and then just wail into them until they die. Currently in the fourth dungeon, and this tactic has yet to fail me. Never did the post-game stuff when I played the first, so I'm looking forward to enduring that.

This reminds me of another issue I have with the game, but maybe I'm just doing something wrong. The jump attack seems totally inconsistent. Sometimes pressing forward and attack does a jump attack, sometimes it just does a swing directly in front of you. Is there a way to force it to do jump attack or is it just kind of random/context based?

I think it's partially contextual, like in Rogue Galaxy how X is a normal swing unless the enemy you're targeting is stunned on the ground, which makes jaster stab instead of swing.

Edit: I think X attacks, forward + X will make you lunge and attack if the enemy is in range, and backward + X will make you dodge backward so long as you time the buttons right.

You can always go back to old dungeons and practice to get a grip on it. This game could have really benefited from customizable controls but L5 did things pretty bare bones back then.

A modern day RG2 and DC3 with updated design sensibilities would be fantastic.

I just got both Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud II, I played and finished the original back when it first released but never played more than maybe 10 hours of 2. Is it worth it for me to play 2 first or should I go through the original first?

Upon hearing the overwhelming positivity about the game from various internet forums, plus the small sale it's on, decided to pick up Dark Cloud 2. I remember not really liking Dark Cloud 1 back in the day, but from all reports I've seen DC2 is much better.

Pretty much Dark Cloud 2 does everything the original did but better, plus a couple new mechanics, all wrapped up in a more fun but also more interesting story. Dark Cloud 1 definitely has its fair share of good moments, but moment to moment you'll probably have much more fun with Dark Cloud 2. It's the Uncharted 1 -> Uncharted 2 jump.

So I'm stuck.

I'm still in Ch2, Sidain, but...
I need to restore that Jabusomethin guy/tree, and I'm working on the withered tree, it says to put the weird trees next to each other, which the game acknowledged, but I put a river in front and behind them, and it refuses to complete! I only put 6 river squares, but positioned the trees practically touching the river, back and than front, and still no dice.

I think you need 15 river squares.

It's been so long since I've played and it's all coming back as I play.

I'm also getting stuck in all the same places.

I'm in Chapter 2...where the heck do I buy items? I can't go back to town, and I can't find a store. Do I have to wait until I build one?

Talk to the people in/around the train. The boss dwarf sells materials, I think the miners sell bombs, etc. Get more characters, they sell more stuff.

What do you mean you can't go back to town? You can always travel back to Palm Brinks from the main menu.

both eyes and nose need to be facing away from the river, the nostrils is kinda hard to get in the right place. And you need 15 river squares.

15? Okay, I got to the end of the Rainbow Butterfly dungeon to Rainbow Falls, but can't continue at all, so I figured I stop and work on the geostone/Sidain quest.

Finally got paid and could buy this - one of my favorites growing up. I've always loved that song they play at the opening after you do the part with the circus and get into the sewers. Brings tears to my eyes, the nostalgia is very strong with this one.

Wait, but it came out on Tuesday. So you played it 2 hours a day, and then decided you don't like it?

Nooooo, just got a softlock, 8 mins into a floor T-T
I checked the inventions in the menu while I was in a Monica level, quitted the menu and bam

In the final dungeon now in the first game and will hopefully have my Platinum tomorrow so I can finally jump into this!

I'm in chapter 1. Last night I took 81 pictures in Palm Brinks, which I believe is everything I could take a picture of at this point. And I loved it. I think that speaks volumes of how much I'll enjoy reliving this game.

Should I play the first one?

Is there any connections, storywise, between those two games?
You don't have to, but you would appreciate the game more if you did complete the first one, especially near the end of the game. But the story is more or less self-contained.

As someone who love DC2, but never played the first game back in the day, I'm just now finishing up the first game for the first time.

Short answer: no, there is zero connection storywise other than some cameos and easter eggs from the first game, and some gameplay systems that are similar.

Long answer: I would not advice you to play the first game, as in my opinion it simply does not hold up very well today. Everything the first game did the sequel does magnitudes better, while also having far superior graphics, story and gameplay.

  • The combat is somewhat similar, but it's much more unforgiving in the first game. You get knocked down constantly, even while blocking, by cheap enemy attacks that are often unavoidable. Be prepared to swear a LOT and replay levels due to status effects like never-ending poison.
  • There's "build up the town"-aspect, but far more limited in the first game.
  • In the first game if you're not keeping your weapons repaired and "just play" you can get really boned. If a weapon breaks, it's gone for good.
  • Too many side-characters that you need to go through menus to switch in and out during dungeons. It might not sound so terrible, but it starts to drag towards the end when you have 6 characters with unique abilities you must swap in and out constantly.
  • There's fishing in the first game, but nowhere as advanced as in the sequel.
  • No Spheda (golf mini-game) in the first game.
  • No photography or inventing in the first game.
  • Minor annoyances that add up, like really high difficulty spikes, inventory management, curses on levels that can't be broken, and so on.

This is just my opinion of course, as someone who never played it when it was originally released.

For those saying there's no connection between the two games, you've all actually played through the second one to the end, right?

I actually never finished the bonus campaign in the second game, but I think I know what you're getting at. :)

Ah man, f*ck Spheda.
You're forced to do blind swing and try to guess where it'll land, then it just bounce off into the water every damn time.

I forgot how infuriating it is to take pictures for the scoops.

Fuck. That.
I've only had difficulty with two so far, but they were pretty annoying. lol

Camera (game camera, not the item) in this game kinda suck. Wish you could just lock it behind your character for combat holding L2. The manual pan is too slow and the auto camera is too squirrely and disorienting. Plus there's the inverted y-axis. I rate the game camera 4/10 "not good".

Just finished Underground Water Channel. I loved this game on PS2 but It's not as good as I remember. Combat is pretty lame so far.

I'm playing this for the first time right now and am 15 hours into it. It is such a dense game with so much shit to do all the time, I'm really enjoying it. It builds upon the foundation Dark Cloud 1 set up in a really good way. At first I kind of missed the simplicity of Georama in DC1, but after completing the first major town 100% I can see how this new system is great in it's own way. It's definitely gives you more freedom.

If you're not feeling the combat, I would recommend focusing on the Ridepod. With all the customization you can do in terms of both maneuverability and weapons, I would say Ridepod combat is definitely the most straight up fun combat in the game, plus the need to invent cool new parts pushes you to participate in the photography system as well.
