Dark Cloud 2 / Dark Chronicle |OT| A Picture's Worth a Thousand Gilda

Was just about to get this on the EU store, now i´m unsure if i should wait and get the US version, or will they be the same perfomance wise?

I'm certain what I'm experiencing has nothing to do with that, having played other PAL PS2-on-PS4 titles. Expect the NTSC version to have a comparable dip in performance.

Does it actually let you pick a 60hz mode? The PAL games list doesn't actually include this game.

Edit: Ah different name in PAL land, and it didn't support 60hz. Unfortunately then the 50->60hz frame blending will almost certainly be contributing to that feeling of fps judder.

@above Yes, after looking into it, getting the us versions will be preferable most of the time for these ps2 titles, ohh well no biggie for me.

Played the game from start to finish(in the NTSC version), never had real complaints with the fps at all personally.

I hadn't with the PAL version either. I compared the PAL PS2 version and the PAL PS4 version, and it's straight-up running at a lower frame rate.

It might be contributing, but it's almost certainly not the only cause of it. The performance of the game in the emulator is straight-up not as good as the original game running on PS2, and it's more significant than a bit of frame-blending. I'm wholly expecting the NTSC version to be running at a lower frame-rate when it releases later today irrespective of the region-specific PAL issues that affect every game.

Yikes

How long do you guys think the grind is to the platinum? I loved the game and am looking forward to it getting all the trophies but my memory is a bit hazy how long it took me to beat...I definitely didn't do everything before like all inventions and and all the games side content

Haven't played the game yet but I love how its OST sounds exactly like the Professor Layton games.

I know it makes sense since it's the same composer but still, it's pretty fun.

To be fair, it's that the Professor Layton games sound like Dark Chronicle, rather than the other way around. The settings are pretty similar in atmosphere and aesthetic, too. I've always gotten the same warm and homely feeling playing both series.

Whats up with all the fishing posts? Never played DC

The randomly generated dungeons have multiple side parts to them. Optional to the main game, but required for the platinum.

Fishing, a Golf Like game, Monster Objectives, etc.

Edit: Basically, you either love the whole package, or you find it to be too much. But, like I said the vast majority of it is optional.
That platinum is going to drive many people crazy though.

This or Rogue Galaxy. I'm going to buy one today, but unsure which to go for.

Which is more about exploring/grand adventure?

That's a hard question to answer. Dark Cloud 2 has far more to it i feel than Rogue Galaxy, which is mainly about the story and going from place to place.

DC2 has far more environmental variety as well as backtracking and freedom to just generally go where you want at any time, as opposed to being funneled down a linear path(which isn't to say linear stories are bad, i just don't think Rogue Galaxy's was particularly engaging, especially by the end)

This.

Is it worth getting the US version then? I'm totally on board for this, despite the steep price.

It would cause the least amount of problems, definitely

TLDR: Rogue Galaxy is more about story and character development, Dark Cloud 2 is more about its mechanics (though still has a good story).

Long Answer:
That's a tough one. Rogue Galaxy is far more about its characters and story with actual level design (albeit a bit linear) and borrows a portion of the weapon upgrade system from the Dark Cloud games while adding in a team based Action RPG battle system. You go from planet to planet in a fairly traditional RPG, "you're the chosen one"-type story, with the first quarter of the game focusing on the individuals in your party, 1/4-3/4 of the story focusing on the main character's hero quest, and the last quarter focusing on the (really late revealed) "big bad". If that's what you mean by Grand Adventure, then that's what you're looking for.

Dark Cloud 2 has a pretty decent story as well with a compelling Hero and Heroine, but it's far more focused on its mechanics - weapon building, procedural dungeon exploration, all of the mini-games, and of course Simulation world building - than its story. The combat isn't quite as robust as Rogue Galaxy, but still engaging enough to not get boring. It enhances what Dark Cloud set out to do and delivers on pretty much all fronts.

Cheers for the thorough post. Rogue Galaxy sounds like more of what I'm after tbh :)

Depends on who you ask. Rogue Galaxy is trash IMO. I could never bring myself to complete it, and I tried three times. Just... not fun. Bad level design, uninteresting characters... etc.

Edit: I don't want to derail the thread though..

Rogue Galaxy isn't a bad game, but I just feel like the systems in DC2 kept me engaged while RG just kinda faltered more and more as I continued playing.

Hi, fair comment, but Rogue Galaxy is closer to the type of game I want to play right now.

I am terrified of getting back into this game. I played it for soooo long before I borked my save and lost everything.

Shhh, it's okay. Just imagine all the things you'll be doing. Georama, spheda, fishing, taking pictures, and that soundtrack. ♥

I wish it was 4PM already. Update please hurry.

Played until near the end of the first dungeon, I have noted all the missable photos/scoop so far, going to aim for the platinum <3

Also, regarding more missable stuff (some spoilers):

After beating Chapter 7 (the Moon Flower Palace) you can no longer visit that area to get its medals. Make sure you get those before beating the boss of that chapter, I assume you need them for the trophy.

I've always wanted to play this game since it came out but never got around to getting it. The demo kiosk at Target always made it look so grand and exciting when I was a kid haha. Most likely gonna get it when it drops today!

Is it just me or does the text look kinda blurry? Like its hard to look at it and read for long time. I'm in Russia so I guess I'm playing PAL version if that helps. I dont remember this weird feeling reading texts in this game on PS2.

I remember playing this game as a kid and I absolutely loved it, I'd probably buy this immediately if I had the time to play it, but I won't have much free time till far into February and even then February is packed with great games.

Definitely putting this on my list and hopefully I'll get to it soon enough :)
