My sister watched Titanic like 6 times and I couldn't (and can't) comprehend how anyone could watch a movie that many times in like a week or two while it's still in theaters. Two or three times yeah..

Well, in defense of Titanic, wasn't it in theaters for like 28 weeks? You could spread it out quite a bit.

Another impressive thing about Titanic's success is that the film had a running time of 3 hours and 14 minutes, which means it can pack in fewer showings than a lot of other films.

Edit: Damn, beaten by seconds!

Or a dead heart-throb.

Pretty silly thing to say, since a huge part of Titanic's popularity was due to "heart-throb" Leonardo DiCaprio. Do you not remember "Leo-mania"?

Shit, then I suppose I should take it that my elaborate plan was not successful?

Good job completely missing the point. If you're going to try and trivialize Dark Knight's box office by claiming it's partly due to a "dead heart-throb", it's pointless to go ahead and compare that to Titanic of all movies, a film which got a huge boost due to a heart-throb. Alive or dead is completely irrelevant. The fact is that Leo was hugely popular all over the world during the Titanic days, considerably moreso than Ledger is now, and Titanic owes a great debt to that.

Relax. I did not trivialize anything. The death adds an air of romance or tragedy to an otherwise pretty normal action movie.

To the Joker character, sure. The guy basically looks like death, and he's played by a dead actor, so there's definitely a twisted yet romantic tinge to the Joker character. If that stretches out to the whole film, it's only because the film itself is quite dark and the Joker is so memorable.

I really don't think Ledger's death has had a huge impact on box office, though. Have some people gone to see it because it's Ledger's "last" role (it's not technically his last, but many think it is)? Of course, but I think far more people than that are seeing it because the film has gotten such excellent reviews and such dominantly positive word-of-mouth. Not to mention that a lot of people are probably feeling left out in some way by not seeing it.

Not to mention, A ticket to Titanic was only $8 and TDK is what $12-15?

GAF alone makes up half of "The Dark Knight's" domestic gross.

Lets get down to the real arguement, here:

Titanic
- Leonardo DiCaprio
- Kate Winslet's boobs

TDK
- Christian Bale
- Heath Ledger (in make-up, so not hot)
- No boobs

Titanic wins, because it uses the proper formula.

Chick flick + Thrilling Scenes + Boobs = Box Office Smash

Women will drag their boyfriends and husbands along to see the movie, and they are rewarded with boobs. They can act like they didn't like the movie at all, but they got some good looking knockers to look at for about 30 seconds, so it wasn't all bad.

TDK uses a similar formula, but it starts it out all wrong for mass market appeal.

Action Movie + Thrilling Scenes + No Boobs + Maggie Gyllanhaal = Box Office Almost Smash

Being an action movie cuts it's potential audience down, and the fact that Katie Holmes was replaced by Gollum ruins any chance of men seeing quality boobs.

So I repeat as I have in the past, this is all Maggie Gyllanhaal's fault.

Box office almost smash?

The fact of the matter is Titanic simply is a phenomenon that really doesn't adhere to expectations or trends in terms of box office, it flat out defied them on all levels, it's an exception not the rule to blockbusters.

So your saying TDK isn't a box office smash?

OP, you'll be pleased to know Florida State starting DT Budd Thacker has now seen it 6 times. He also dressed up as Batman for opening night/midnight screening. :lol

In 1997, most people were not buying DVDs or any other type of home movie. The theater is where you needed to see it. Titanic is more family friendly, which attracted a larger audience. TDK won't come close.

VHS? Blockbuster Video stores?

1997 was not the Stone Age

I think a ticket to Titanic costed me what... around $6? and now one to TDK costed me $9.00 with student discount.

Which means TDK would have to do 50% more than Titanic to really beat it.

Box Office Almost Smash

There is only 1 BOS and it's Titanic.

The number 2 chair is BOaS, and it's TDK.

TDK - Maggie Gyllanhaal + Katie Holmes + 2(Bare Breast) = BOS status.

I'm assuming you're joking and what not but I'll still take the bait. Why would breasts in an ACTION film cause this BOS status? I didn't realize the massive audience seeing TDK was all girls and it needed help getting guys into the theatre.

Saw it twice so far. I'll end up seeing it 2 more times. Imax Viewing next week ^_^. And when it hits the cheap theater by me(I pretty much will see any movie twice there, I just love the theater.)

I really do see some people seeing TDK short here, It does have a chance. It hasn't even been out for 3 full weeks yet:lol

I've seen the movie 4 times, and probably would have subconsciously called back to the big screen 3-4 more times by Katie Holmes' mammary glands.

This is like the Mariah Carey fanbase buying multiple copies of her new cd to spur sales. Just ask Mariah herself, she posts on gaf.

Titanic DID have a dead heart throb. The fact that Leo died in the film itself drew in more girls than Ledger being dead in real life. They could cry to Leo dying over, and over, and over, and over.

Yes, but when you go back and watch it again, Leo magically comes back to life!!

YAYYYY!!!!!

I totally agree, more people went to go see Titanic because the tickets were cheaper! So after we calculate out the improved sales from cheaper tickets, TDK wins hands down.

They don't call the Titanic unsinkable for nothing. TDK isn't beating it, but it'll hit $500m and probably end somewhere around $520-$530m.

And that would be fucking incredible.

TDK will definitely hit 500mil, and that would make it the 2nd film to ever do so.

I think Ledger would be proud of his accomplishment and I think he's leaving behind a lasting legacy with this masterpiece.

Man I've seen it twice already and I NEVER go to theatres, I usually wait for the bluray but this movie is THAT good. I will probably see it at least 1 more time, hopefully IMAX if I can get tickets.

the DVD/home theatre market is NOTHING now like it was 10 years ago with VHS. Have you seen the amount of money DVD sales/rentals pull in? Transformers made something like $300 million off the DVD release.

Titanic happened at the right time. It released and kept trucking during a lengthy blockbuster movie drought.

Plus, its soundtrack sold like the next coming, and that one track stayed on the top 10 for like a millennium -- it played on the radio after every 3 songs.

The turnover rate of movies in theaters and home video is pretty damn fast nowadays too. A film can do like $300 million blockbuster and then only less than 6 months later, in cast of Transformers, only like 4 months it's already on home video. Studios don't want to linger past anything on the fall/winter releases, there's simply too much money to be had with home video. Rush Hour 3 like broke even in theatrical gross, disappointing compared to it's predessors, but just on rentals alone in 2007 even with a December release, it did another $70 million!

No waiting for TDK for a year to get it home in this day and age, that's for damn sure, awesome!

Definitely Maggie Gyllenhaal's fault, no doubt about it. Why would you cast a lead that the audience HOPES she keeps her clothes on, I mean, there wasn't a single moment in that movie that I felt would benefit from her being naked, and that says alot about appeal and sales. :lol

It's kinda funny how people keep saying Maggie's ugly like their opinion is the irrefutable popular fact.

It's also a little sad.

They do? Where?

"Maggie is ugly. Don't argue. YOU CANNOT WIN!"

She's butt-fugly :lol

This is not debatable.

It's just my opinion

When adjusted for inflation, Gone With The Wind did the most smashing....

They just tried to get someone as close to Katie Holmes as they could. In a way.
