Dark Souls II' Was 'Unplayable And Broken' On Consoles Before Graphics Downgrade

PS3 version runs just fine. No idea where the complaints regarding framerate are coming from, it certainly runs better than demon's souls did, or dark souls 1 did on 360.

I'll take a lower FPS on occasion over screen tear, every day on any platform.

It does dip every once in a while, but it's very playable. I'm in the same boat as you too. I can take occasional dips into a lower framerate. Screen tearing drives me nuts.

This should have been on PS4 + X1 at least. Not happy I'm going to have to double dip for a GoTY edition later. I'm debating PC too, as is. So that's almost $200 for one game. Ridiculous. A port would have solved half this shit.

I agree. It's ridiculous that you blame the creators of the game for not having the patience to wait for the version you want. Blaming a company for personal problems is not really logical.

Then they shouldn't have passed off tech-demos as the real thing.

We're still not actually sure it was a tech demo made only to sell the game. It's entirely possible that could be what the lead PC build looks like. It's also possible the small slice of the game they showed using the old lighting actually did run fine on PS3 for the TGS demo, but every other part of the game ran like shit with the old lighting.

If the Forbes article is to be believed, FROM didn't build a wholly separate tech demo to only be used for promotion.

Yeah, like when Bioshock 2 & Last of Us got that massive level design & A.I. downgrades, practically no one gave a shit.
Lighting downgrade changes in Dark Souls 2 & the forum goes bonkers.
The last of us downgrade only happened from the e3 and early builds. All games are dwongraded from their early reveal vertical slice demo, this is expected, dark souls 2 was showing a superior build 6 weeks before release. Stop talking shit.

From Software must be the most incompetent developers around from a technology stand point

You're right, the lighting in this game is awful.

That's real time btw, not baked.

The fact of the matter is the lighting engine was upgraded noticeably over Dark Souls 1.
The saturation, placement & gamma of the lighting was changed significantly over the reveal (along with the level design).

The core fundamental of the lighting engine is still in the game.

You can't tell me with a straight face that the "atmosphere is still there". Well, yeah is there, but is clearly not the same.

Better graphics means better atmosphere. Both things come hand to hand, is pretty easy to understand. People who expected this level of graphical fidelity wasn't because "oh my good look at that tesselation!" because the dark series was a game clearly withold with technical limitations.

The best that could happen to Dark is, precisely, the PC port. The game looks way more beautiful and is just higher resolution and SSAO. Imagine witha full new engine and not being as limited as before.

This is just from the pure graphical point of view, of course there's the whole matter of false advertisement.

Classic Horror atmosphere vs. Modern cgi jump thrills say hi. Also ps1 resident evil and silent hill atmosphere vs. Modern atmosphere in those games. Atmosphere is sometime s enhanced or focused on more as a result of working within restrictions.

Why? I'm pretty sure bigger, best looking games didn't had that problem. Why not spend a little more in the sequel in order to have it be more than a cult hit?

Wasn't Demon Souls over a million & Dark Souls over 3 million sold?

Not a cult following by any means.

The hyperbole against the games tech & graphics is astounding.
Being playing last night & some of the areas kick the living shit of most, if not all, comparable 3rd person sword & sorcery games.
There is some jaw droopingly good locales in this game.

Someone explain to me why it wasn't developer for PS4?

because they can make more money by putting it out first on the consoles that have the bigger install base, then delaying and refusing to talk about the PC version so people get antsy and double dip when they might otherwise not, then putting out a "surprise" next-gen version

Let's just be painfully blunt.

If you're going to demo/showcase a game - meaning not behind closed doors, pre-alpha/beta/gamma unfinished version etc - then no, your graphics will not be expected to plummet. This is not an unreasonable expectation and a standard many, many, many people are held to in their jobs.

If it's a very early version, fine. Nothing's really set in stone.

If it's a small downgrade, fine. Some things are expected to change.

If by 'just fine' you mean ' certainly playable, but still really shitty' then, yeah the game runs just fine.

“This is what it comes down to: a playable framerate. The early builds that the screenshots came from were playable but only just so. The game was not in a state where it could be sold at that point. I strongly suspect that they were focusing heavily on delivering a top-notch experience on PC and underestimated the challenges the new systems would pose on PS3 / Xbox360. That’s my analysis, anyway. But, factually, the early builds played like Blighttown the entire game.
this sounds like wolf tickets.

The PC version has to be buyer beware at this point. They aren't showing any videos of the PC version and we know what the console version actually looks like now. I don't think that will stop people from being mad about it, but this is the Internet and sanctimony rules.

It doesn't help that they already consider this case closed either.

Namco Bandai has advised VideoGamer.com that it considers the Dark Souls 2 downgrade case closed and that it likely won't be issuing any further comment on the controversy.

I'm sure it's been said but the lighting isn't the issue, the false advertising is.

And the TLOU claims are absurd. Messing with the AI myself was just as satisfying as what I watched pre-release.

Yeah, PC preorder cancelled. Namco and FROM left the original a nigh-unplayable mess despite it continuing to sell well via sales on Steam and Amazon. Namco are scummy, FROM technically incompetent, and they've shown me that they don't deserve the benefit of the doubt.

I can't believe we're going to have to wait until launch when people start buying it to know what it's like. What a clusterfuck.

I havent said much on the subject, and I know this is easy to say now after the fact, but Ill still say it because its what I felt at the time.

I always thought the initial footage looked too good for current...err... last-gen. Like the first time with the bridge and all the dragons flying around for example, I thought it was ps4/xbone footage, and was surprised when I found out the game was last gen only.

Your telling me when DS2 was too much for the PS3 and 360 when we have games like Red Dead Redemption. Lol don't make me laugh. Either FROM's inexperienced and could not make it run on the machines or they were constrained by time.

The bit you mentioned still looks really good in-game. Maybe not as amazing but playing it feels good. Regardless of what the PC version does, having that at silky 60fps with higher resolution textures etc will make it even more impressive.

Either From were rushes for time or something else but you can tell they clearly had to rush and change some areas. It still looks great in places and rushed/poor in others. Simple things like textures and other weirdness just show a lack of attention to detail for the whole game but it still looks great.

vintage!

That might be true, but first Naughty Dog will need to learn to make a fun game, instead of Dragon's Lair clones and interactive movies.

Naughty Dog knows plenty about making fun games, and visually attractive aswell. Your achievement of fun seems to be remembering enemy spawns and patterns. Also getting killed easily by traps that work one time only.

It's okay I like that too. No need to diss on ND.

I feel like they picked a poor time to start developing an engine that (supposedly) has more utility for next-gen (which is now current-gen), yet choosing to work backwards from that and target it towards the PS3/360 without optimizing for their strengths. (Or at least, not being able to do so in the same way.)

It would have been better, then, to delay the console release and move it up for the next consoles (which might have had consequences for sales), or create a new engine for the following game instead. Comparing Dark Souls II to a single-console AAA exclusive title makes for a fairly far-fetched argument, though.

RDR also probably cost 100 million USD to make whereas Fromsoft probably had +/- a tenth of that to make Dark Souls 2.

That they were attempting to make a cross-gen game that supposedly was going to improve dramatically in the visual department and be PC-focused has always struck me as a lofty goal. The gulf between what most PCs are capable of and the ancient-assed Gen 7 hardware is just massive.

The worst thing that ever happened to the Souls games was the PC version, and especially the graphics fanboys that Durante's patch attracted. Before that, the Souls games had a nice community who cared about more about the experience than how shiny it all looked, now the conversation is dominated by talk of how the entire experience is worthless because it isn't running at a high enough frame-rate or with enough shaders in process.

Its pathetic.

I fuckin' love GAF.

I'm with yah.

There a limit to the amount of trolling you can get away with. Clear's got to learn to make it less obvious. And thank-you mods for granting him/her the tag they've received--there's nothing worse than trying to enter into a honest discussion with someone who's being disingenuous. Without that tag I'd probably have taken the bait.

What the fuck is that?! Did you take a picture of your screen with an polaroid camera and then take a picture of the polaroid with a shitty cell phone or something?

That's a pic from the strategy guide of No Man's Wharf when you light up the entire cavern.

Don't have a capture card & there are no sites that take reliable screenshots anymore.
So yes, shitty cell phone pic.

I was going through the first OT, and saw these. Man, I really hope the PC version does have these, even if I'd never get to play it.
