Dark Souls - New Screenshots [Update: Bosses Can Now Effectively Chase You]

Can someone give me a brief description on what had everyone raving about the original game and what additions have been made concerning coop?

This just seems like a really excellent game from what I've seen, and I love the fact that it seems fairly intense and difficult.

See here for the original game.

With co op I think it's largely the same. No voice chat and 'random' parties. The message system (where you leave messages for other people) will make a return and you will supposedly benefit from misleading people (as well as helping, I assume)!

-Deep combat system, with more realistic physics

-Incredibly dark and creepy environments, totally unique throughout the game.

-Innovative online multiplayer, and communication system to other players.

-Heroic sense of accomplishment.

Man that preview...Dark Souls is going to be the best game ever. I always joke around that it's a mishmash of genres, but it really does seem even more like a survival horror action rpg.

i don't want to make a new thread but there is dark souls preview by GamesTM, March 2011.

Miyazaki wants the players to experience tens of thousands, or millions of deaths."
"The combat remains largely unchanged from Demon's Souls, while the team concentrates on improving the elements of role-playing and exploration."
"You are no longer [able] to pick a character class from the start. Instead you are allowed to equip any armour or weapon you like, prising the potential for customization wide open."
"There are over 100 weapons, and players will be able to cycle through them in real time. A wider range of magic spells is also available."
"Miyazaki is careful to point out that the game isn't truly open-world as some media outlets have reported, but it will be less compartmentalized than Demon's Souls. There's still a hub - a campfire within a ruined castle - but you'll be able to leave through your choice of exits and work through the interconnected levels. We're told that you'll be able to travel to any location you can see in the distance."
"Secret routes and locations have also been discussed. From Software inadvertently reveals one to us in a place aptly named Trap Road"
"Player death does not have him transform into a ghost, but instead he finds himself in an alternate part of the area and discovers a tunnel to a secret location. Miyazaki is keen to point out the tunnel leads to an even harsher environment as punishment for slipping off the rail and dying."
"We are trying to provide an experience one or two steps ahead of what we did for Demon's Souls."
"Dark Souls introduces mid-level bosses that can pursue you in unprecedented ways, leaping over walls and climbing buildings to reach you."
DAM Bring it!

Wow this already sounds it will be so much better than DS...and I loved loved DS. I wish someone out there would make a shooter which has the difficulty of DS where dieing really makes things harder on you and defeating a level/boss really rewards you and makes you feel like a boss for that moment until you get your shit kicked again few moments later lol

This is going to be exquisite.

That should just apply to the whole game. Every single time you die the game just gets harder and harder O-o

That's the way Demon's Souls did it, wasn't it? With the black world tendency? I know they're not going with tendency this time but maybe each area will have an alternate death/punishment place where the player ends up as punishment when dying.

It only works if you had you body, at least now.

However, when the game launched in Japan, YES that was the way it worked. Every time you died the WT would got slightly black. It took quite a few deaths to move it all the way but it was kind of insane if you think about it.

The other versions of the game launched with the 1.04 fixes and it was never as issue.

You know what? I like that "genre description".

Before Demons Souls came into my life, the only other fairly recent game that cost me so many lives/continues was God Hand. DS was a whole other type of beast, though. :lol

Can't wait to go back into this type of world. I'm looking forward to another a game that's not afraid to make its bitch.

Some concept designs

So, apparently the world isn't truly "open." That is, you're always in one distinct level or another, and each level has a main boss, but they're interconnected and more expansive than DS's levels.
To me, it sounds a lot like a Zelda game, particularly the original.

I hope they incorporate enemies that follow you Nemesis-style through levels - that feeling of being stalked would add some awesome tension.

Damn this sounds great. I especially like the idea of not choosing classes. DS is already pretty liberal with its approach but I think the new system works even better with their idea. Bosses with better pathfinding/ability to follow you is also good to hear, although that means I will not be able to abuse the flaws and die even more.

I recently picked the original up for dirt cheap, a really nice surprise and one of the few PS3 games that really grabs me. In addition to what they're planning I would like to see the camera and the wonky lock-on feature fixed. Framerate issues were pretty heavy at times so fixing that would be welcomed. I'd also appreciate the option of a less brighter HUD. I'd even consider paying full price for it instead of waiting for the first round of price slashes.

If you still can't pause this would kind of suck.

Dude, I still remember that on RE3, so awesome. I now want RE1-3 remade :(. Either way, I hope something like this is in store for this game.

Now that you mention it I died once when my controller died on me and I was in body form and I had the Adjudicator 2-3 hits from defeat - I was not too happy.

I hope the targeting of enemies is a tad more intuitive though, it could be clunky at times. The combat was spot on but the targeting wasnt that great.

Seems like one of those things that is entirely fixable, and that improves the whole experience by more than you'd expect. (Kind of like the improved survivor AI, radio messages, and "map change" icons in Dead Rising 2.)

This game just looks/sounds better with every tidbit released.

I thought there were no class, too. But in the EDGE preview it stated that you still choose a class. Also, the totally open world just means no load times, or something to that effect.

At first sight, the new emphasis on roleplay will appear slight. As in Demon’s Souls, you begin by choosing a character class (currently one of ten, according to Miyazaki), which sets your basic attributes. Thereafter there’s far greater flexibility in the type of character you can grow into. In contrast to Demon’s Souls, Miyazaki and his team have worked hard to ensure these character choices prove more integral to the story that unfolds for each player.

In contrast to Demon’s Souls, the various regions of Dark Souls’ gameworld connect seamlessly. The team is hoping to eliminate all loading screens from the game (apart from when your character dies) in time for launch.

Hidetaka Miyazaki interview said:
The creator of Dark Souls does have at least one unique piece of desk décor: a Sony digital photo frame placed at the rear of his desk, facing outwards towards the neat rows of workstations at which his team toil away. You might expect the frame to cycle through images of his family, or snaps from a relaxing holiday to distract from the burden of fans’ expectations. Miyazaki, however, loaded the device with hundreds of pieces of user feedback on Demon’s Souls, quotations from players outlining what they loved about the game and what they hated, each statement sitting resolutely on the screen for a full 30 seconds before making way for the next.

I like this guy.

Do we know if Shunsuke Kida will be returning as the composer?
I think in general Demon's Souls had one of the best audio directions that i've heard in any recent game.

Please people our creepy ambiance and melodic demon battles depend upon this answer.

So I'm going to finally be playing the original game this weekend (maybe tonight). How long are the servers still going to be up again?

I also think the whole "if you see it in the distance you can go to it" might not necessarily be what we're thinking of, which is that it's something you can travel directly to ala Morrowind or similar games, watching the architecture grow bigger as you get closer, etc. It's probably more in the vein of "see that castle in the distance? well if you go through this catacombs level or this swamp level or whatever, you'll reach that destination." So the stuff in the distance would be acting more as backdrops. Remains to be seen, of course.

i hope they will improve the online system. I never really figured out the message system and invading-stuff in Demons Souls.

If they are able to improve that, i think it will have a huge impact on the lasting appeal of the title (at least for me :P ).

God, this game is gonna be even better than Demon's Souls isn't it? GOTY 2011 is gonna be one fierce competition. I like it.

umm, just last night i thought about how much i'd love a game to have enemies that chase you in surprising ways around the environment, and truly make you be afraid of them.

and they're doing that in my new favorite game series? holy shit do i love you From Soft... i am sorry i haven't bought much of your games before Demon's Souls, i'm so sorry :(

I have no problem with this at all. As long as the exploration aspect is there, and the game doesn't do anything to stifle me or hold me by the hand, I'm good. :lol

I can never quite put my finger on what made Demon's Souls such a mind-fuckingly brilliant game and overall gorgeous experience, but I can definitely see/taste/hear/feel it in the sequel. Super hyped.

maybe i was to busy dying but i never got the invading/coop stuff.

i sure knew how the general messaging system worked: If you leave a message, and someone else finds it useful, you will regain health.

But i never really got the coop system. You'll leave an "invitation" message on the ground, maybe and just maybe if someone stumbles over your invitation he can join you. Of course you have to be in body form and if other players where like me - this is rare condition. The whole coop system exactly worked zero times on my playtrough.

I never really bothered with the invasion stuff again after the first time i got invaded by some glorious super villains that impaled me with their spears in the blink of an eye. So maybe it was my mistake, but nowadays i am used to online matchmaking that is somewhat easier to manage.

Please dont treat my uneducated opinion over the Online System as a fact, its just my point of view. It simply was too complicated and too much of a hassle for me. So i abandoned it alltogether and just sticked with the SP - which was a blast.

This seems to be where you're getting mixed up. It's actually the player that joins someone else's world in soul form that uses the blue eye stone and the host in body form that sees their soul sign and can choose to summon them. Were you trying to use the blue eye stone somewhere when in body form and getting a fail message?

I can agree that the non-traditional online system in Demon's Souls could have been too cryptic for some players and a little too hard if you just want to play co-op with one of your friends but in other ways it added to the mystery and appeal of it. I hope that Dark Souls can find a balance between the two.

BTW did you ever beat the final boss of world 3 while online or did you try getting summoned by the Old Monk as the boss yourself?

Those new bits of information have me giggling like a schoolgirl. Chasing, relentless bosses? Fucking sold. I'm going to be scared shitless, but sold anyway.
