I need some opinions: I'm trying to focus on a Battle-Mage, and looking over the stats for Parameter bonuses it looks like an Enchanted Iaito +5 scales pretty well with Intelligence at a B-rating. Also Strength & Dexterity at an E-rating. So I plan to raise my Strength to 16 to use the Drake Sword, and my dexterity to 20 to use the Iaito. Then focus entirely on Intelligence with Vitality / Endurance / Resistance at a decent level.

My problem is I have the Enchanted Ember, but I think I also need the Magic Ember... not sure the guides don't specify and that seems to be located much further in the game. Would this be a feesable build? A Battle-Mage based in Enchanted weaponry and mainly a spell-caster.

Was killing time trying to take down the drake and accidentally got a Drake Sword. Didn't even know it existed.

Now it really feels like I'm cheating. Gargoyles, Capra Demon, Gaping Dragon all down without much of a problem (though Gaping Dragon was an easy enough fight that I probably didn't need the sword for that one).

Damn, so how many
Lords have you killed anyway? I'm done with Seath, Bed of Chaos, and Nito. One to go for me, I think?

Uhhhhhh... None? :D My character isn't that bad, he just takes a good amount of damage from those enemies when I have my back to them.

You can absolve it, I did the same thing and paid 68k souls (SL34) to get back in, get what I wanted from them and betrayed em :D

Is there anything actually IN the Demons Ruins after
you beat the Ceaseless Discharge? I started exploring but the seven Taurus demons and assorted Capra demons kind of make that a tough thing to do.

I'm a warrior and I'm focusing on strength, dexterity, endurance, vitality, and resistance, in that order. If you don't want to use big heavy weapons then there isn't much point in jacking up your strength, though, just put those points towards dexterity. Personally I want to be able to wield a multitude of melee weapons from Ultra Greatswords to the Iaito so I'm leveling strength and dexterity instead of just one or the other.

For those of you who pre-ordered the Dark Souls guide from www.bookdepository.com , I sent them a tweet yesterday asking what the deal was with the guide not being shipped yet and they replied today with "hiya - some of the books got stuck in customs, we're expecting them today, sorry". Hope it ships today.

I'm in undead burg, and I can't even fucking beat the first black knight. I just beat Demon Souls this week as well and didn't have any problems, fuck I never used backstab or riposte in demon souls as well

Ah, thanks, then I'm on the right track. STR is mostly for big heavy weapons then? I want to use swords that go well with shields (but are good two-handed as well).

I wouldn't fight that black knight until you have a shield with 100% phys block. His swings do too much damage even when blocking otherwise. You don't need to backstab him to beat him but it does make the fight easier.

Also, why does Blighttown suck soo bad!

I'm Soul level 10, with the starting armor and weapons. Too early?

Yeah it seems like strength is really only important if you plan on using heavy weapons. Of course there are a lot of weapons that also get a stat bonus from strength so it's nice to have it decently leveled but chances are those weapons also get a bonus from dexterity. The reason why I would suggest dexterity if you aren't interested in wielding big weapons is because a lot of the curved swords and smaller, quicker weapons get great bonuses from dexterity but little to nothing from strength.

There are a lot of weapons out there though, so there's probably plenty of good options for any build regardless of how you level strength and dexterity.

But yeah, those stats you mentioned are the only ones I've touched so far and I'm SL 50 right now.

So, I guess I fucked up on a certain NPC knight in a cell.

I didn't talk to Laurec before beating the Bell Gargoyles, and now he's not in his cell. Am I screwed out of his quest later?

WHY IS THIS GAME SO GOOD, WTF?

I didn't talk to him either and then he appeared in Firelink. I think you can still proceed on his questline, you just miss out on summoning him and a reward for letting him out.

I'm seriously considering starting again as I'm not sure if my Pyromancer is that great. I'm not too aware of what stats I should be focusing on levelling up with this class, so I feel that I may have messed up.

Also, do people have good farming techniques around Darkroot Gardens? Taking in to consideration that I have yet to fight the boss there or the gargoyles.

That's what I've been wondering for the past week. This game has managed to kill my desire to play any other game, I don't even feel like going into other threads on GAF.
Same man, wtf!

Sorry if this has been answered already, i searched and scanned threads, but I'm still a little miffed at the way the scaling for weapons work. On my initial Thief build, I stacked the hell out of Dex, I think it sits around 45 right now. I noticed as I was leveling it up with both the Longbow+6 and Iaito+5 equipped that the damage scaling REALLY slows down in the 40s, to the point where it's hardly noticeable.

The thing I'm wondering for those of you keeping better track of this, other than eyeballing, does the Stat Bonus of a weapon effect the maximum scaling? For instance:

I have a sword with Dex Bonus of C, and a sword with Dex bonus of A. Will the C sword stop giving noticeable damage upgrades earlier, at say 20 Dex? And the A sword, does it keep giving better consistent damage until say 40 Dex?

Again as far as the bow goes, I was watching the damage increase per point of Dex, and in the 20's it was giving me 3-5 damage per point of Dex, but then when i hit 40, i could sometimes go 2 Dex points without getting a single boost of damage. This whole thing just confuses me.

*Disclaimer* I was not a min/max player in Demon's Souls, so this is really the first time I've taken an advanced look at weapon upgrades.

Does your shield have 100 phys block? Are you a knight or barbarian? I think those 2 classes start with such shields. Also, if you're doing 10 dmg to him then it's going to be a long and frustrating fight. If you're doing 40-70, then it's manageable but still long.

Fuck yes. Got past the goddamn gargoyles, used my Master Key and stole my way into Blighttown backwards, and walked out with the Shadow Armor set and Iaito. Well before you're supposed to have either one.

Fuck you game, I win.

1) Get to the first bonfire and farm the
walking tree things
. They only give 100 souls each but go down quick (especially for a Pyro) and drop some important herbs.

2) Get 20k and farm a ridiculous number of souls/minute behind the glowing sealed door.

Is it possible to get the astora straight sword from the darkroot basin side of valley of drakes? I was there briefly before I was killed and I'm pretty sure there was a gate blocking the way. Not entirely sure, though.

This guy is unbelievably stupid.

No way is that real. How can he play so much and not understand how it works?

Where's the first bonfire in the area? The only exit is covered in fog, unless there's a bonfire behind it?

Oddly I feel exactly the same! I was ultra hyped for Forza 4 and this game has killed all my hype for every other game!

Not even been in any other GAF thread today!

Wow the
Moonlight Butterfly
was a joke, first boss I beat on the first attempt. Easy to dodge attacks that don't too much damage and she had low health herself. After I creamed her I was totally expecting her to transform into something more dangerous.

Ok, onto the questions, thanks in advance Dark Soul GAF gurus. I'm down in the Darkroot Garden / Basin. I'm spoilering everything just in case but they're tiny spoilers at worst:

1. I received the Butterfly's soul as an item. Do all bosses give up souls and are there certain criteria for each? The description mentions I can create an item from it, do I just use it for the option or do I have to take it to a specific NPC? Are weapons created from boss souls top tier weapons?
2. The enemies behind the sealed door in the forest are tough as balls. I don't want to cheese them into falling to their doom, any suggestions to taking down the invisible knights? Not being able to lock onto them is annoying as hell.
3. Is there anything back behind the door outside of those annoying enemies? I'm probably just going to come back later after leveling up either way.
4. Speaking of which, the hydra keeps on kicking my ass. Is there a trick to getting him make physical attacks so I can actually hit him? I basically just run around the water with until he roars. Along the same lines I'm having a rough time dodging his physical attack as well. I can't roll out the way in time before he plasters me.
5. Valley of Drakes. There is an elevator down there before the hydra. Anything worth risking life and limb back there? Is this an optional area or will I be forced to head back this way eventually?
6. When do I get the option to join the Princess Guard covenant? I ran the first bell and will be heading to Blightown after I clear out the forest.

EDIT: one more

7. I remember reading somewhere that there is an NPC who invades ur world before a boss fight. What boss? Want to make sure I approach it while human.

Once you get the seal from the Blacksmith for 20K, break the wall to the left of the door and it will reveal a Bonfire. Use it then head down the spiral starcase and get the attention of the 4 Human enemies in the next room. Run back to the stairwell and hide in the right corner. Ready your shield and the enemies will run up the stairwell and jump / fall over the cliff. 7K Souls in about 3 mins. It's cheap, but it works. Then just go back to the Bonfire and make them respawn.

It's like this game is operating on a completely different level than other videogames in my mind. Seriously, I was looking through the weapons and armor in the guide last night and I was just in awe. When you consider the upgrading system there is just so much content here that it's stunning.

Haha, but it's still not as good as I wanted it to be. Remember how big my expectations were? xD
