Not to pimp my own show, but this week's 8-4play is up and we spend about 20 min gushing about dark souls.

What the? How can you even arrive at this conclusion? I mean...

I'm kinda fuzzy on how it looks in action, but doesn't he lunge in and then fall off his lava cliff at the end of the attack? The thought of luring a boss off of a cliff doesn't seem that wild to me. Is it super glitchy-looking?

LOL WUT! I need to see a video!

Wish I had one. It was after he got enraged. He did his impaling attack and, while being situated after, wound up being pushed outside of one of the side windows. He fell, and didn't die until I ran to the other side of the room. It was pretty wild.

So, how do people play a thief/parrying character? Do you not use a shield at all? I never tried it in Demon's Souls.
I still use the starting shield. The fact that it doesn't protect me from the full physical damage is a good reason to learn how to parry and counter. Was indeed thinking about dual wielding knives like a boss, but it seems a bit too much right now XD

You guys are too late though. The Souls expert Yoshichan has already spoken. 5/10, and the biggest disappointment in gaming history. :(

So I rented the game from Redbox to try it out,I love it! I had convinced myself that I wouldn't like the game because of the difficulty but I found the combat very addicting and satisfying.

My main question is about the bonfires. How far apart are they typically from the bosses? Is it equivalent to the Gargoyle bosses on the roof (the farthest I've gotten)? I was expecting them to be way farther away for some reason and didn't find it that bad (I think I made it more difficult in my head from the reviews). Also,is the hardcover guide worth getting as well?

duckroll said:
They're the hardest guys ever for me, because of my inherent impatience. I keep my shield up as they roll at me, but I'm used to enemies stopping once an attack is blocked, so after a few hits against my shield I'll always try to get an attack in while they're STILL spinning, and then take 5 hits from the ongoing roll and die as a result.

This enemy is truly a challenge on the mental state of the player, more so than anything else. :(

I think it's also their agro range is so far you will be engaged with one then his retarded brother will show up and roll into your back or sides.

I still hate them because it only takes one tiny mistake then your dead. I think I have died to those things more than bosses.

Here's what happened with me. Once the fight was initiated by me picking the items up at the far end, I ran like a baby to create some room between me and him. Eventually I ended up backing up against the fog gate, and I was kinda cornered. Then a tentacle strikes and I dodge out of the way to the right. I slash at the tentacle a few times and he withdraws it. I stand there waiting for him to make the next move, but instead the entire model just kinda slides off the edge and dies instead. It's super weird and definitely a glitch. There was no falling motion or anything. It didn't even look like the boss was in any danger whatsoever of falling off any cliff.

From Lost Izalith to Crystal Cave... what the hell is going on with this game? It's becoming such a bad game, it's not even funny. Just straight up constant bad design from one place to another... slowly but surely becoming a 5/10 for me and one of the biggest disappointments in recent history.
It was becoming a 5/10 if the game had kept on going (and followed its trend of bad design). It didn't really reach that stage of 'bad' and thank God for that.

edit: And come on! What if I thought the game was a 5/10, it's still my opinion damn it!

Man, you ran far if you ended up back at the fog gate. :lol

It's not really that far. The entire boss area is like, one long narrow cliff area with a tiny divided passage in the middle. My strategy for narrow area fights is always to move as far back as possible, so I can watch the boss approach me and learn how it moves!

lol, yeah, that doesn't sound intentional at all, then. Kinda surprised it wasn't fixed in the last patch, in that case.

I've seen this love/hate/love thing all through this thread. Even when you hate it, you just take a breather, come back and fall in love all over again.

regardless of any objective technical merits of the game, the fact it can stir such emotion is a win in my book. Its a flawed masterpiece like SotC. The flaws give it soul.

Wouldn't you need the
lordvessel to get the key from the curse-curing dude
? Or are you talking about somehow getting around the door?

What bosses do you guys recommend putting a summon sign down for at SL40? Been having issues getting summoned at that level, though I've mostly tried at Anor Lando.

duckroll said:
You have to block them if you're moving around in the tiny tight fuckcorridors under the Painted World! Looooooooooool. :(

Hmmm in that zone I just remember the ones in that dark room which was fairly open. The danger was getting caught by a few of them. When I was playing there was a player message warning to pull enemies so I was on the look out. :P

Duckroll and whoever else suggested using IronSkin + go nuts with dps, THANK YOU.

Got me through those goddamn
catbears
with ease, I was having a lot of trouble with them.

Yoshi you just dont like dying :). I love this stuff so much and love the design... different tastes I guess :).

I think he drops the key if you kill him, I haven't tried that yet though.

No, no, no. Do not bring that shit up, the later parts of the game was nothing that I would consider 'love'. Bad design is something I will never accept and go 'eh whatever, the game was awesome up until now', especially if this part was 40-50% of the game. I will never go back to Lost Izalith, Crystal Cave and Tomb of Giants and say "Now that I think about it, these maps are amazing!".

DkS sure did stir a lot of emotion but this was mostly because my hype was extreme. SotC was a flawless masterpiece, not even the framerate could scratch its surface.

This had nothing to do with it... also, I barely died in this game.

Got through most of
the Catacombs
last night. Did anyone else freaking LOVE that place? I mean,
there is an obvious frustration factor from the reviving skeletons and necromancers tucked away in annoying places
, but the visuals, atmosphere, and overall design were easily some of my favorite parts of the game thus far.

I used the master key to go the back way into Blight town and used hidden body to sneak up on the Anor Landon archers so I think my experience with this game ended up way more positive than most.

Endgame Spoilers/Questions:
Umm...okay. It's like they ran out of time and money, and the game just ended. Gywn doesn't say a single word to you, despite being the boss of the game (in some....vague way), and the credits just roll. This is one of the most disappointing game endings in quite a while. Nothing is explained (I guess he "linked the fire" judging by the achievement I got but...what?) and it doesn't feel finished. What was I fighting for/against? Why was I doing it? The basics I got were that...dragons were in control...and then Gods took over, but then people came along and the Gods died out or something, but to keep the sun burning, I had to "link the fire" to...prevent the darkness? But humans are the darkness? My mind is so full of fuck right now.

I'd like to see a talk show with Ornstein & Smough. Maybe have some Dark Knights on as guests, chat up Quelaag's SI bikini issue. Good times.

I hate them so much.

Yup, it sucked.

I'm 100% melee, and I'm trying to do it solo without summoning. I may have to abandon my own personal restrictions for this fight though.

I've no idea how badly that could go... I am 100% melee also, STR, END and recently VIT. I was overpowered for Anor Londo, so I thought I could simply stroll in. But the latter half of the fight was mental. I even found it difficult with phantoms!

You're over-thinking it :) Sen's Fortress doesn't require fire weapons, go in raw.

And I did and Sen's Fortress is now my bitch.

The
fucking Iron Golem took me I'm not kidding 40 odd goes. I'm a wanderer with no magic and my +10 Iiota was only hitting for 31dmg one handed. I finally beat him by dropping to a complete set of dark leather and just the Ilota 2 handed. Wasn't too bad in the end.

Now we're in Anor Londo. Praise the Sun! Where's the blacksmith and is this doable at level 42?

I agree with Yoshi, imo the game went from one of the best games I've played, to something...else... during the latter parts of the game. I'm still not done so here's hoping for an amazing endgame that washes away this bitter taste from my mouth. But I'm not holding my breath.

Blacksmith is down the elevator passed the
Gargoyle, and quite a few other monsters
. It can be done at that level, if you know what you are doing.

It's a really good thing that you aren't holding your breath =/ I completely agree with you though. The last couple of areas are really quite lower in quality than everything else in the game.

You didn't go into the narrow areas with the fake walls? Did you get the Annex Key?

my dear god fuck tomb of giants.
really starting to dislike the game the further i progress.
what starts bothering me apart from the shitty maps and cheap shit to make it "hard":
what the fuck am i doing in this game, feels like theres no purpose to kill any boss besides shitty loot not worth using. i mean i know who the end boss, but not why. starting to think about why and what really fucks it up for me.

Grats on clearing Sen's Fortress :D!

Enjoy Anor Londo, you seem good enough to be able to do it at level 42! Just keep the same mentality as Sen's Fortress... take it slowly. I'll be awaiting your posts complaining about the two archers, I'll be here to aid you :).

After Ornstein and Smough, I see a message: "Amazing Chest Ahead!"

...

I rated it up after what happened next. Amazing indeed!

Ok this worries me. I rented the game and got as far as the Gargoyles and having a blast, considering buying it today. What do you mean by 'something else'?

Let's put it this way, I find the level design of all of the early things, like undead burg, sewers , sens fortress, heck even blighttown were put together in an amazing way. The way everything was interconnected....*shivers* god the design is masterful.

Now I've reached places that look like somebody threw an atombomb in the "level design program", slapped his hand together and said "Done".

I wish I could say the same thing... the shitty place I bought it from keeps delaying it for some reason :/ Apparently they're now getting it in 4 days...

Don't worry, you've got plenty of amazing hours ahead of you (considering you've just reached the Gargoyles). Buy the game :)

Yeah, decided to go in to Blighttown as far as getting Iaito. Fucking WHAT at the frame-rate. Sod that shit.

I return to Darkroot Basin and on my way there, took a pot shot at the red dragon in Undead Burg with my heavy crossbow and ended up killing it in one go. What the fuck? I finally acquired a longbow as well but that was after I killed the dragon so I missed out on the Drake sword. My luck is awful.

At this point you don't need the drake sword, you can make stronger weapons pretty easily.

I hear the Iaito is very popular. I need better dexterity to use it though. Is it worth ditching my superior Battle Axe (at least at this point) and work on the Iaito once I'm able to wield it? It's an awesome sword and reminds me of Vergil from Devil May Cry. Love the R2 slash.
