Dark Souls PC 1080p. Confirmed, like, for real.

Does it matter if it was an accurate translation? It was all the information that was available at the time. And there are still quotes coming out, like in the Eurogamer interview from 2 weeks ago, saying they aren't improving the PC version's framerate.

The first one less so, but the second one is how it should be.

There's no reason they can't have developed higher res assets and scaled it down for the console release, but still have them lying around and simply use those bundled along with the game for the PC.

That's because they are honest people. They aren't improving it, PC hardware is.

In my experience, quotes from game "journalists" about technical aspects shouldn't even qualify as rumours.

What they have said multiple times is that the game is not being optimized for PC. This is unequivocally NOT the same thing as an unimproved frame rate, which will still be achieved through better hardware.. something the developers have also stated.

I'm assuming you've never played the game, or you'd know that the UI can indeed be hidden, and that quick loading is most definitely not needed. And would potentially fuck up several of the games core mechanics. If that sounds horrible to you my advice is play something else.

It isn't so pointless. You just pointed out the textures are increased. Dark Souls won't have increased textures apparently, 'cause it was never made with PC in mind. And they don't care to go through the source files and output high resolution ones, if they even have them. Not saying it's right or wrong because actually I think the game looks great in the videos. It must just use a ton of tiling textures or something.

Again the textures alone aren't the reason Max Payne is 30GB, not even close. It's a pointless comparison because the reason Max Payne is 30GB is all of the prerendered video. Almost any time you're not in direct control of Max it's a prerendered video so that the next level loads and it's a seamless transition from video to gameplay. And there are a shit ton of videos. THAT'S the main reason why Max Payne is such a big game, and it's a apt comparison to Dark Souls which has all of 1 cutscene.

It's like the people who say "I don't understand how Max Payne is 30GB when Skyrim is much bigger and is only 4GB."
 
Okay then. Sniper Elite V2 is 6gb. Riddick is 10gb. Starcraft 2 is 8GB. Ass Creed Rev is 9GB.

The fact of the matter is, for such a high quality game 4gb is pocket change. I could load the entire game into ram for chrissake.

Taking the loading times between deaths, warping, starting the game, etc down to 1 sec or even half a second would increase my affections for this game 10 fold. I like my transitions and performance to be smooth as butter.

In the same way that while the slight delay between switching world screens, or bypassing a cutscene, or entering and exiting levels on the XBLA version of Super Meat Boy isn't bad...the PC version's quickness in these areas makes it hard to go back.

I don't really know what you're getting at. We knew that they did not rework the assets before we ever had any idea how much storage the game would require.

Ok? They already stated they didn't redo textures or anything so why would you expect it to take up a vast amount of space? And chances are high the 4GB quote is how big the packaged file is not how big it is once installed.

Also again the above have much more cutscenes and voice work than Dark Souls does.

By quickloading I meant restoring save-states - eg. saving in the middle of a boss fight and reloading right there if you die. Faster load times are most welcome :)

SEv2 has ingame cutscenes iirc, voice acting is pretty much the same as monster voices. If anything is different, it's model detail and textures.

I'm pretty sure this game will bomb.

It's already a niche game and being released on the PC much later with crippling shit like DRM and obvious port qualities I don't see it doing too well.

If it does "bomb" it will be due to lack of interest. Taking the latest information into account the port looks solid, and GfWL hasn't stopped other games from selling well.

Anyway, I'm still more hyped for this than most releases this year, and I'm sure that it will do well at least in Europe. There are a lot of people here that this game should appeal to who don't use consoles.

I don't agree. Other games do well being released on GWL if they are well optimized and released day one or close to it. Being cagey on details of the game and releasing a year late make people reconsider double dipping or jumping in.

They're scaring people off with this nonsense. Namco should be on top of this stuff even if From isn't aware of it.

I know ideological purity is part of being a Real PC Gamer but I just don't see why. I bought Dark Souls on PS3 but if I can play the game at 1080p and/or 60fps and it runs when I click on the icon then who cares about the rest?

Regarding bomb or not, if Real PC Gamers are the hardcore real gamer types they claim to be then it should have no trouble finding an audience.

Only thing weak about it is the graphics from what I can understand. Your CPU and RAM are more powerful than my desktop and I run Crysis and TW2 on this thing.

Dude, I'm sorry that you can't read Japanese or whatever, but come off it with your "confused interview" and "translated from Japanese" stuff as if something was lost in translation.

The interview by Famitsu with the game director had the following question:

――PC版は、PS3版、Xbox 360版を忠実に移植しつつ追加要素を加えたものになるのですよね？
So the PC version is going to be a faithful port of the PS3 and 360 versions with some added elements, right?

宮崎英高氏(以下、宮崎)　はい。基本的には忠実な移植になります。解像度に変更はありませんし、フレームレートが60になるということもありません。

Miyazaki: Yes. It's basically a straight port. There will be no change to the resolution, and the frame rate will not become 60.

Not a whole lot of room for misinterpretation. Obviously, Miyazaki could have been leaving things out. However, when talking about "texture resolution", the common term would be "テクスチャの解像度", and not simply "解像度", which is the term that is generally used to refer to screen resolution. He could also have been thinking about Blight Town when he said "the frame rate will not become 60", simply meaning that they won't be doing anything special to improve performance there. All of this is a bit of a stretch, though.

When we could only take his words as he put them at the time, it sounded like they were locking the frame rate and rendering resolution. Nothing got lost in translation in this discussion. Japanese message boards exploded in a similar fashion in response to this interview.

Regardless of how ridiculous a locked frame rate and rendering resolution is, that is the information we were given at the time, so stop trying to twist the events to make it look as if people were unjustified in their reactions.

Either the interviewer, the interviewee, the person transcribing it or any combination of them were confused. We know this since the resolution at least has been very clearly and repeatedly denied and even physically shown to be untrue since then.

I'm sorry, but that analogy is stupid, pointless, and is not similar to this situation in any way. It's not a matter of "don't believe everything you read." There was no reason to doubt the source--he is the goddamn director of the game, so you would think he would know what he was talking about. Second, he came across as very negative about the PC version situation in the interview. Given the context, there were far fewer reasons to doubt the statement than to believe it.
 
Can we use a controller with Dark Souls PC? Also, any word on if the framerate will exceed 30, or if it will at least be 30 locked?
 
Since it sounds like it's not locked, I'm guessing there's either some level of ignorance with computer hardware with that statement, or even on very high end systems places like Blight town will decimate 60 FPS, even if 90% of the game runs at that reliably. Or he could be speaking about minimum requirements, and the game isn't going to be optimized in a way that would've made it 60 FPS if thrown back on consoles.
 
So basically what they're saying is that they're not really gonna further optimize the game for PC. A powerful enough computer will probably be able to brute force a better frame rate.

I don't think this'll be as big a deal as some people are making it out to be. I doubt any of the console ports (that is, 80% of the non-indie games released on PC at this point) released these days have ANY PC optimizations either. Given the low system requirements for this game, I don't think it'll be an issue except for low-end rigs.

Yeah, this would've been a big deal back in 2007, but nowadays so long as the port is EQUAL to consoles and doesn't notably fuck up like SR2's it's going to come out just fine on most recent-ish computers. And personally, if my computer WERE barely good enough to run console ports I'd be mainly playing them on consoles anyway, making it a moot point.

well at E3 it was having frame rate issues when it was running at Origin EON11-S PC (very high end PC that uses GTX 6xx gpu),it can be very unoptimized port.
 
The E3 systems were having frame rate issues when they showed the DS demo for pc.

They have pretty much 6> month old hardware. If that kind of system has issues, everyone's gonna have issues.

so yeah GTX 6xx having framerate problems at 720p and if a new and powerful hardware like that is have problems the then port is most likely a complete clusterfuck.

Hmm. Going to wait and see what people think when they get their hands on it, could be a few weird spots where it hiccups, or it's an older build with issues that had been solved since, but if it's giving people trouble I'll just get the DLC on PS3 and wait on a Steam sale.

Well from what I saw the E3 demo was only one boss fight that was part of the new content that's still probably being optimised.

We're also apparently ignoring anything said in later interviews or by the Namco guy QA'ing this that has a build that sounds like it's all the content that said:

The build I have isn't final, in fact it looks different to the videos from the E3 (I didnt attend this year). The game allows graphic resolution changes, AA, options and that's it from what I can remember. It plays identical to the console version using the Xbox controller but looks alot better due to 1080P res. No texture options from what I could see, but they still look great. With the increased res you tend to notice the background detail a lot more, especially when the frame rate is a lot more fluid. Console version chugs a lot at times.

Guys I can only give feedback on the build I have and whle that interview states it has problems, when I played it the game was silky smooth in most areas. The CPU on the system is a i7 930 @2.8gh and vid card was ATI 5700 series (not sure which one). A pretty average to low end system by today's standards. There we some frame rate issues but you tend to notice these when the game drops below 60fps.

This one is definitely going under "let other gaffers take the dive and go from there".

I have +100hrs on the PS3 version, so I'm not in a hurry, but I hope to god that this thing is at least decently optimized. As much of a garbage platform/DRM GFWL is, I can deal with that but if this thing will only run slightly better than consoles (which isn't much) on decent hardware, then I'm just gonna stick with getting the $15 dlc whenever that drops.

Yes, but the game will still utilise GFWL, and there's no getting around that as it's used for MP. As far as Steamworks integration is concerned, the best that can be hoped for is achievements and cloud saves.
