Dated visuals you still think look amazing

Final Fantasy IX. One of the final PS1 games and an amazing showcase of how to push it to the limits.

Garou: Mark of the Wolves. Some of the finest and most fluid spritework in history, made in direct response to Street Fighter III.

I agree with a good half of the posts in this thread...

Tomb Raider 1 on PS1, the atmosphere seeps through the visuals. So good.

My jaw drop when I first picked up this game.. it was so damn beautiful and 60fps.. albeit it wasn't the same as the arcade.. but wow Sega pulled everything to get this game running the way it did on the Saturn..

I keep posting the same Ridge Racer Type 4 gifs every time a similar thread pops up, man it just looks so fucking great to this day. It just has a timeless aesthetic.

And to this day, it still has my favorite GUI design in any game. Readable, clean, unique and gorgeous. What more can you ask for?

The presentation in Type-4 puts most modern games to shame, really. And that MUSIC, too.

A streak-free polish, a perfectly cohesive package that only 90s Namco could provide.

The only acceptable answer. It's mindblowing to me that this game came out over 10 years ago and it still looks amazing, it's an art style that doesn't quit.

I'll also throw in Chrono Trigger.

X STRIKE IS THE HYPEST SHIT

Game looks even better in The Master Chief Collection too, Bungie did a great job visually with Halo 3 but I seem to remember critics bashing it in this regard?

Yeah I remember that. It wasn't technically impressive at release, but the game shines with its art direction/design and color palette above all.

Metal gear solid 2's tanker sequence still has not been exceeded in terms of rain effects. The rain actually looked and behaved like rain, swirling in the wind etc. Even the generally good looking modern games have rain that looks like falling toothpicks from the sky.

Chrono Cross in terms of presentation is the best game I've ever played. It looked amazing back in the day, and I still think it looks nicer than most games I play now

That was on the PS1. I can't even imagine how good it would look now with today's tecnology

Jaggies and blockiness welcome! Let's admire the games that managed to pull off beauty while being held back by the limitations of their systems.

I volunteer Panzer Dragoon Saga!

I can't find many screenshots to do it justice but i'm replaying the game at the moment and i'm stunned by what it can make the Saturn do. There are moments where it still looks astonishing today.

I just wanted to add this.. this scene is from zwei.. this is the first time you fly in the game... my jaw literally drop when I saw this.. the sunset... the music.. the atmosphere.. it was just amazing!!

I still believe that RRT4 is the most technically accomplished game I've ever played. Having owned a PS1 since launch, I got to experience the gradual improvement in quality in games. But still, even towards the end, most games still had the same PS1 quirks. Wobbly textures, polygon tearing, pop in etc.

Type 4 was rock solid. It felt like the world had been carved out of stone. No glitching. An incredible draw distance, unmatched by any other PS1 game. Everything in Gouraud shaded. Frame rate never dips. Beautiful use of lighting.

I also add World of Warcraft. While Blizzard is updating it's engine slowly with each patch and expansion, it still looks "dated", but damn does it still look good. I blame the comic look, which just ages so much better. Looking at it in 5 years it will still look great, while stuff liek Guild Wars 2 will probably look bad again.

Final Fantasy VIII/IX

Dragon's Lair.

MGS2.

Tekken 3 was a miracle on PS1 and still looks great to this day.

Sonic 1/2/3/ Sonic & Knuckles.

Broken Sword.

Virtua Fighter 5 is stunning on PS3 too.

Vagrant Story looks really great, but this will has always a place in the videogames museum as one of the most artistically cohesive games ever made. From the presentation, the FMV, the design of the course and ending in the music.

What a perfect package.
