Dated visuals you still think look amazing

01.JPG
Ocarina of Time, it and Majora's Mask felt more solid and readable than virtually anything else on the N64. The dynamic lighting is a big part of how it all holds together so well, and it's still impressive how colour and shadow is used in some parts.

Rollercoaster Tycoon is also a thing of beauty, especially considering how crazy low the system requirements were, even back when it came out.

Dragon Quest VIII and Rogue Galaxy.

I really hope Dragon Quest VIII gets a remaster in HD one day, and no the 3DS/iOS versions don't count.

I cant find a good picture but the Wonderland world in Kingdom Hearts amazed me.
I don't know why they just made the world square rooms and clearly painted the backgrounds on the walls. I figured it was either graphic limitations or was for style, but regardless it still has a great unique look to it.

FFVII (outside of the character models), FFIX, FFXII, Silent Hill 3, Ico, and Shadow of the Colossus. Wind Waker is still incredible, obviously.

Final Fantasy 9 - PS1.

The art backgrounds in that game still amaze me. For a PS1 game it was a spectacle and truly still is.

Seconding Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Looks amazing to this day.

Also, I really like the way Ace Attorney looks. Fantastic for a GBA game, though it's hard to find GBA screenshots (since DS shots are far more abundant and not that different looking).

Lastly, the Fire Emblem GBA games.

Even the maps are beautiful in their graphical simplicity.

WoW, FFIX, FFXII, Chrono Cross, Unlimited SaGa, Final Fantasy Tactics A2. There are tons of other games I could post, but my memory fails me right now.

Can't post pics atm, but will edit them in asap.

DooM: Many times imitated, but the original duology exists at the top in sheer excellence.

Star Control II: A multimedia masterpiece. Arguably the best of it's time.

WTF. I love Dr Slump. Did this get a western release??

Nah, Japanese release only. I'd love to see someone translate it now that there's a possibility that we'll see PSone games with trophies. That seems like a good opportunity for games that were only released in Japan to finally see a western release.

The Donkey Kong Country games. No matter how many times people go on about ugly they look, I still think they look fantastic to this day.

Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive. Why why WHY nobody doesn't make games which look like this??

Yes! YES! That game was so much fun and at the same time nearly frustrating hard.
I miss these games. Desperados and Commandos were amazing looking games with nearly endless ways to play the maps. Good old times...

Speaking of Commandos, I still think Commandos 2 looks amazing. And that game is also from 2001 (like Star Wars:Rogue Leader or Resident Evil Remake...what happend in that year? Lol.)

I had forgotten about this series. Never got to play it but as a kid I remember seeing some videos of it and I always thought of it as a naughty game. Seems I wasn't completely out of line :D

It's naughty for it's day but it's mostly suggestive with a touch of visual stimulation. A little lesbian action to move to plot forward of course.

It's my #1 game that needs to be remade.

Yes! Every map is pretty much a piece of art.

I could be mis-remembering but didn't Disney help with the animation?
Double Fine did an interview with one of the devs, a while back. Basically, Disney gave them classical animation frames, and they had to "get them" into the game. Depending on their tools, either scan them in and edit them manually, or literally redraw them on a pixel basis.

I;m still hoping that this ends up as one of the PS1 games that I'll be able to play on the PS4 via their new, shiny emulation. Gorgeous at the time and I spent a lot of time playing it.

The sequel was developed by Crystal Dynamics but I didn't enjoy it half as much as the original.

Pandemonium - PS1 - 1996

EDIT:
Also from Toys For Bob, who made Pandemonium. :)

MGS1. Though polygonal, the textures are basically pixel art which look striking and I think beautiful scaled up. It really plays to the ps1's strengths rather than trying to do "realistic" visuals. Maybe they'd say it was supposed to be realistic but the art style remains strong.
