Dated visuals you still think look amazing

I came in to post Panzer Dragoon Saga lol. I think a lot of the first and second party saturn titles still look great. Panzer Dragoon Zwei, Saga, Shining Force 3, VF2, Virtua Cop, NiGHTS.

Don't know why but the vistas in GTA San Andreas still look good to me. I think the game had great atmosphere. Obviously not modern or anything, but I loved them

Chrono Cross in terms of presentation is the best game I've ever played. It looked amazing back in the day, and I still think it looks nicer than most games I play now

That was on the PS1. I can't even imagine how good it would look now with today's tecnology

My choice as well. Specially the first picture and the fight with
miguel

Eh, FFVII looks bad but Legend of Dragoon has aged even worse imo. It looks like dog shit. I'm currently struggling to get through it on my PSP, even though I loved it as a kid.

Policenauts

How does one even go about playing Snatcher or Policenauts nowadays?

You know I was always a proponent of art style and overall art direction being way more important than technical achievement when it comes to games aging well. This thread certainly backs that up but there's definitely an argument for technical achievement as well.

What do you mean a licensing mess? Did EA gets exclusive Star Wars?

This is up to LA/Disney for releases, and they already porting SNES SW to PS4.
I was under the impression that because it was exclusive to Nintendo when released and timed exclusives weren't so much of a thing that it would be a nightmare legally. Maybe also in terms of porting it.

Snatcher is available in English for Sega CD.

Policenauts is only available in Japanese for the PS1 and Saturn, but there's a fan translation patch available.

Magical Truck Adventure is one Model 3 game I wish people would talk about more often. It's very accessible and fun for all ages, but the game's also got a great aesthetic that hasn't dated much.

Sadly it's one of the hardest Model 3 games to emulate, but progress is continuing, and the fact that we can now play Cool Riders nearly perfectly gives me hope.

Rad Mobile is I think the pinnacle of Sega's Super Scalar tech. It's hard to believe it's made up entirely of sprites.
You'd be close to right if System 32 was actually Super Scalar tech, but it's not. System 32 boards used the RISC architecture while SEGA's previous boards used multiple Motorola X68k chips. The best-looking System 32 game is most likely OutRunners, but it's got competition from the likes of Hard Dunk, Arabian Fight, Dark Edge, SegaSonic the Hedgehog, SEGA's F1 racers, and Jurassic Park.

No emulation :<?
I mean I would legally buy a port of both games 100 times over, I just really want to experience them!

I stand corrected.

Rad Mobile still blew me away the first time I saw it tho. And I mean like a couple of years ago.

Well you can go down that route if you want to. :P

Classic Doom has the perfect mix of dated yet charming graphics to me. I really love the use of color and atmosphere being utilized by limited lighting and texture.

There's a looooot of posts on this thread that have misinterpreted the OP - the visuals, both technical and artistic, of both of these games are timeless, the opposite of dated. OP was referring to stuff that you love despite it looking objectively/technically bad - Panzer Dragoon being an absolutely perfect example.

Maybe rose tinted glasses, but I still think this game looks great.

I played the hell out of that PS1 demo disk.

The sequel didn't look as nice to me though.

I was obsessed with truck adventures. It was at our local chucky chesss when I was a kid and I played fhe shit out of it

Haha...

Even better than RL, sequel Rebel Strike (2003) managed to improve the lighting and texturing AND have the entirety of Rogue Leader rendered with improved visuals and playable in split screen co-op!

Retroarch SNES9X Next core, enable FX overclock-->40 or 60Mhz from core options.
Super smooth Starfox gameplay, like that Warioware Wii minigame.

Those screens are pretty amazing! To be fair, the new Battlefront doesn't seem THAT much better. Amazing when you think about it.

Nothing quite like the Infinity Engine.

This so much. Planescape especially is just fucking beautiful, the artsyle is both outrageous and serene. Everything from the color palette to the wide variety of locations for such a story-driven game make it an absolute wonder.

Super Mario Galaxy.

Metroid Prime.

In fact games from the PS2,Xbox,GC and Wii era still look pretty good, especially at higher resolutions.

If we count portables then some GBA/DS games have great sprite work, TWEWY , Mega Man and Castlevania come to mind , 3D wise 3DS and PSP games have low specs but can still be lookers, KIU, 3D Land, Zelda remakes REVelations, Kingdom Hearts,Final Fantasy etc.

Other than that, it would only be older PC games or SNES/Genesis, but i dont find them to look that appealing with some exceptions.

I came here to post Yoshi's Island, Garou, Metal Slug, Vagrant Story, Mega Man Legends and Soul Calibur. Seems like most of those have been covered (just skimmed the first 5~ pages of the thread) so:

Monster World IV for the Mega Drive (quoted for size)

And just look at this box!

Animetic Story Game 1: Card Captor Sakura for the Playstation

Moon: Remix RPG Adventure for the Playstation

Anything Shenmue II, basically. Other games that have aged with pride is Jet Set Radio (thanks to its art style, I guess) and Dead or Alive 3.

Too many games to list for me, many of them mentioned here, but this is one I've not seen yet. The Curse of Monkey Island.

DVLPKSy.png

Stunning game.

For 3D games, in general, the less per-pixel detail your art style has, the more likely it will hold up over time.

Conversely, the less per pixel detail you put into your art style, the less likely your game will be seen as a visual powerhouse upon release.

Sorry but that looks fugly. The engine for HL was really, really bad. Even when I played the game in 1997 or 1998, I didn't even think 'yep, this looks good'. It looked ugly then, and it looks ugly now.

Unreal, Quake 2/3, UT99 looked a lot better for their time.

Ugly ? You kidding me right ? This game used photorealistic textures for an impressive work, it was unbeleivable and outstanding in 1998.

The engine for HL was really, really bad.

You seriously mean that Quake engine extended look bad and wrote right after that Quake1/2 look better. Okay.

I'm still saying HL has incredible graphics and art direction for his time.

Resident Evil 3 is a nice little upgrade background on GameCube comapred on PS1 (Dreamcast/PC before ?)

It's very clean on CRT TV with RGB.

Virtua Fighter 4 on Naomi 2. We´re talking about a 2001 game with 14k polys per character.

virtua-fighter-4.jpg

Even the PS2 version stands well, despite having the geometry per character trimmed to the half (more or less 7k polys)

I really like how Earthbound and Mother 3 look, and I wish that series was wildly successful so we got more of those games. I would love to see that world rendered in 3D as well.

The Adventures of Batman & Robin - SNES
Its like the animation itself.

The water in wave race blue storm. Pretty good water for era but I love the dynamics nintendo puts in them. There's no comparison between the game once you use progressive scan.

PGR2&3
Soul Calibur
Metal Slug

All get honorable mentions from me.

Hmm thinking back on it I think the monster rancher games have held up nicely overall due to the monsters having simple designs

monsterrancher8.jpg

From the ps1 Monster Rancher 2.

The ps2 games look even better.
