I thought some of his LGBT jokes were funny. His business friend throwing a dick on the table as an intimidation tactic and the joke that followed were hilarious to me. That said I probably wouldn't recommend watching the special to a trans friend of mine because I think she'd take it the wrong way and wouldn't approve of his saying tranny.

I think that bit was actually okay. I would say the main issue was probably in the second one with the gallery story and all the stuff that got tangled from that.

The concept of "That's funny, but also fucked up" isn't new to comedy.
Neither is the concept of "I thought that was funny at the time, but I didn't realize it further margianlized one of the most margialized groups in humanity, and that was probably a shitty thing to say."

Id like to hope everyone can understand why some people are offended.

Just like I'd hope posters can understand why some people weren't offended either.

Neither side is wrong here.

Its pretty obvious why some people aren't offended. Because it literally isn't about them and doesn't effect them in any way.

What I think is funny is that they think criticizing a joke is unmanly and childish (man up, panties in a bunch, "triggered" etc...)

When nothing might be more childish than openly bragging about how unoffended you are
Yo I swear. Like folks can't understand why the pronoun joke wouldn't sit well. Or why saying Tranny wouldn't sit well. Comedy is comedy, but when your comedy isn't funny...hey it ain't funny. 99.9% of his jokes here good to great. His Trans jokes just missed it.

Like I think Raw and Delirious are two of the funniest specials ever, they are also problematic in 2017. That was the 90s. Dave telling jokes that fit back then, but not now.

You just didn't get it, see what he really meant was trans people are strong and gangster, and deserve respect from everyone, and most certainly should be called by the correct pronouns.
He could have went with the Trans people are strong and gangsta af route, he started out that way! Then he just went downhill...

Sure trans people aren't as accepted as gay people yet. But if a comedian said "eww you gay? Nigga you sposed to like pussy!" People would have been fine with that 10 (edit maybe 20) years ago. Now? I think everyone would agree that's a stupid thing to say.

"You think you a girl? Eww I'm a call em like I see em BRO" is just as fucked up.

Well fortunately being offended isn't long term. You can sleep it off and be done with it. Eventually everyone is a target. If you can't handle it maybe his brand of comedy isn't for you?

Jesus fucking Christ

He made a joke using the word fag, shit was funny

He made more jokes talking about a gay friend that went by the wayside.

His trans jokes weren't funny.

If he made jokes that were funny, there would not be a blowup about it really

Wasnt there 3 Netflix specials coming?

Or am I mistaken

Third one is later this year.

Based on the posts I'm reading here that is not true at all.

I think the funniest part for me was when he talks about his son at private school. Describing it as crying like Tupac and saying "These kids keep fuckin' with me!" in the voice he made really cracked me up.

I nearly choked to death on my drink during that bit >.<

What Excelsior said below your post; it's so weird to see people acting like people who are criticizing Dave are somehow weak, when the actual situation is that a lot of people are strangely affected by the fact that the criticism exists in the first place.

Criticizing something is not being weak

Good lord so much macho bullshit
Nah excelsiorlef, you a pussy ass bitch who needs to go back to ya momma and get ya panties out of that windsor knot for crticizing a comedian for making jokes that not only weren't funny, but also are problematic.

idk I saw a lot of laughing faces in the crowd

Ugh. Guys. It's not that he makes fun of trans people. It's just that his rhetoric uses outdated stereotypes and terminology for trans people even when it's not the punchline of a joke.

Saying "tranny" and telling people he won't use their pronoun isn't funny, but it seems like some people misinterpreted some of the actual jokes. Like the poster earlier who was mad Dave was talking about trans women tricking men into bed, when the actual bit was about how ridiculous that mindset is, and was absurd to the point it involved two guys cutting their own dicks off and going to the club.

Blackface was probably a riot back in the day

The audience laughed, blackface is okay now

You're basically saying, "i know this is fucked up and offensive, but I love it! Wouldn't recommend to trans people though because it's really transphobic and shitty. Also I know how the joke should REALLY be taken, my silly trans friend will get bent out of shape for no reason, I know what should and shouldn't offend trans people better than her."

No, I just know my friend would be really sensitive to it and might take it the wrong way. Just like I wouldn't necessarily want a friend who was raped to see the bit about Cosby (he rapes, but he saves) even though I think it's hilarious. Some people have different thresholds for that shit.

I cant believe all the "comedy isnt for you" responses. I love comedy. I love dave chapelle. I call him out for shitty outdated transphobic language and now I should just skip all comedy? Really?

I did say earlier that someone didn't get that particular joke, that one was aight.

And even more assumptions

You guys are so good :')

Let's see. A bunch of trans people are standing up in this thread and saying its offensive. A bunch of non-trans people are standing up and saying "Nuh uh, no its not" Checks out to me.

Seriously. I like RedLetterMedia a lot, but if something's offensive, I'm going to say something.

I'm not trying to be macho. I get offended sometimes too. Certain comedians get under my skin. No one owes your feelings a hug when you're offended. That is a personal problem not something everyone else is required to address. Again feel free to sound off about it, just realize it's okay to have a difference of opinion.

How about we hear from ACTUAL transgender people here instead of a bunch of people yelling at each other about whether or not it's offensive to someone that they ARE NOT.
How can some of you think it's ok to lead a charge for a group of people you ARE NOT a part of.

Some of your brains might explode if a transgender member comes in here and says, 'That shit was funny.'

ok what about all the transgender members who have already said that shit isn't funny tho.

No one is telling people that they can't tell jokes, or that they can't like these jokes. Like, this thread is actively populated by people who are criticizing others for being offended by this joke. So please, focus your efforts on those people if you are worried about people ignoring the validity of people's opinions.

Who cares? We're talking about theoretical trans people right now!

So having loved ones who are trans doesn't give you any reason to speak up for them and be offended by derogatory speech about them? That's the same argument as "white people shouldn't be standing up for black people"

Also there are many trans people on GAF. So now they have to out themselves to you to make your argument valid? Get a clue.

...

Spoilers: A bunch of us are trans...

In fact trans folk are the ones taking charge here...

Well that is the risk of publically contributing your opinion a forum. Others may criticize those opinions because they dont align with their own. It happens no matter what the topic.

Because one speaks for all, right? Just like one black person should speak for all of us.

How can you claim you aren't being macho and then immediately connect criticizing the joke to needing your feelings being hugged....

Also I mean the irony of dismissing trans opinions the way you have and then calming you're just trying to say it's ok to have a different opinion is pretty funny...

Fair point.

Hey Dave, don't get on stage if you don't like criticism.

(also it'd be a fairer point if the criticism of our criticisms was bigger than "you're the real bigot" or "suck it up buttercup")

This is hilarious because you clearly haven't watched it as the Jenner stuff happens in the first special and Evilore is in the second one.

The Jenner jokes were in the LA special, Evilore was at the Texas one fyi.

Pretty sure that's in Age of Spin.

I did laugh at your faux outrage though. Some hilarious but sorry ass shit.

So as long as you support someone with horrible jokes at one show who proceeds to make those jokes at another show, it's okay? Gotcha.

"Faux outrage" though, really? Let's take a look at the front page of Off-Topic together.

I think the problem for me is that he just sounds old and kind of out of touch when talking about the subject. I kind of roll my eyes whenever anyone rolls out the 'hey, I'm on your side but..' spiel.
