Days Gone E3 2017 Gameplay

Here is the video of some of the alternate path
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z06ar3MC3wI

Man, that's awesome. It's really cool that they're showing different ways to approach the missions and different weather. I'd really like to see more messing about with physics in the environment (ie. logs rolling down hills to crush enemies or block their path, or that kind of thing), as that'd give a very clear idea of what kind of playground Bend has created to do stuff in.

Looks cool. But man, at the end they straight up blanked that comment about the story and how the world got the way it is... At least give us a "Well, you'll have to wait and see!" or something to acknowledge the guy, ffs. Instead they give us an awkward silence, simultaneously making the poor guy look like a sap and making it seem like they don't have a story worth talking about...

To people saying this will be sent out to die alongside TLoU2: what is your reasoning exactly? Both are set in a zombie apocalypse and have a dark tone, but it seems like they appeal to quite different types of player.

TLoU2 - stronger characters/story (more emotive and convincing), linear progression, confined combat arenas (with a focus on survival rather than empowerment), environmental puzzles

DG - non-linear progression, sandbox gameplay (including horde system), characters/story not necessarily a focal point (but still potential for interesting enemy/NPC encounters)

Obviously the above is mostly guessing based on what we know from TLoU and what's been shown of both new games, but do you get the general idea? I feel like they both have their own angle, as well as the potential to be fun/successful.

Will have to check that alternate path vid everyone is talking about. Game looks fantastic, but dint get the "can't wait" feeling from the on-stage demo, would rather wait for price drop. Melee combat which was completely QTE, and that enemy AI while setting traps, not sure if that was deliberately dumbed down. That bear at the end looked interesting, they should have shown that mini boss fight too.

Cool to see how dynamic it seems from the alternate gameplay, I was feeling it to be a bit scripted off the stage demo.

I think the demo could have used a voice over like the old Red Dead demos where they emphasise the different options and such. I think Rockstar is definitely the best at showing the options of an open world game in a trailer

Also was hoping it was this year, but it's Bend's first game on this scale and glad Sony are giving it the time it needs

wow at that alternate footage. They really should have used that in the conference.

Yeah I mean it's essentially The Walking Dead: The Game so it's going to have a ton of mainstream appeal.

Yeah was about to say this is what that Walking Dead: Daryl game was supposed to be. Crossbox & Motorcycle ready lol

yeah, this was a case where they should have had this video with all the different approaches to a scenario explained by a dev on stage

As a guy with the motorcycle the motorcycle riding in the game makes me laugh. Tooling about in the woods in near pitch black offroad on a cruiser type bike would not end well.

The gameplay demo was certainly far better than the trailer at the conference, but I'm still pretty ambivalent about this game. General zombie burn out I suppose...

Any clear footage of the alternate path gameplay? They sort cut out a lot if to show the directors talking (not sure if intentional or not).

Looking at the alternate path makes it clear that it is at least a semi open world game and not linear like some were guessing. I am also guessing this "dynamic events" that happen in the world that Gavin was talking about will be similar to those RDR or GTA events that happen when you are traversing the world. Good, keep the world alive, but nothing spectacular. Also a fun way to differentiate itself from TLOU is that animals are infected here as well, whereas TLOU is only people (AFAIK). It is also exciting that this might be the first AAA open world zombie game, at least that I'm starting to care about.

Now some extra nitpick complaints after seeing the alternate path:

- Why can't you go prone? I mean if I want to stay on top of that hill and snipe all those thugs, I should be able to. If I want to sneak around, going prone would add to the gameplay. COD4 did prone position and how it affects your shooting way back in the days. MGS allowed you to move while prone way back in the days. This complaint is valid for other games as well.
- Why can't I drag and hide the bodies? After stealth killing someone, I want to hide their bodies in the bushes or whatever so I can sneak past them and not alert the guards. Same problem that TLOU had. MGS did this pretty well and it's been ignored since then. Also a complaint for other games as well.
- AI is still dumb as shit. This is an overall gaming complaint, but damn if the AI is not stupid. You make noise and one guy goes up, following a predetermined line. No one else in the group is even paying attention even though they heard it as well. That....is not how people would react. Same thing with the trap and the rock. People wouldn't be oblivious to it even if just one person checks it out. Plus the pre determined line for other NPCs to go there was pretty obvious. I remember them saying how awesome the AI was in KZ2 and then the same was said for TLOU and the AI was just as dumb as other games in both of them.
- Lack of multiplayer game here sucks, especially a co op mode. A horde mode would be pretty awesome here. I remember having tons and tons of fun with RDR zombie multiplayer. Maybe for a sequel, but it's still disappointing here.
- MC is still bland, and after GTAV, I think I want and expect to play with multiple characters nowadays on open world games like this
- Are there any non white people in this world?

Why do they keep showing the less interesting (but still cool) paths during the actual conferences? I recall reading about an alternate path take on the 2016 demo and finding that much more interesting and unique. The alternate paths we see in the PlayStation Live interview's much more interesting too. Well, either ways, I'm very excited for the game. It looks and sounds like a ton of fun. Not much yet for the story, but I'd love to learn about what happened too, and about the different types of freakers and their ecosystem.

Don't like the UI (or would "HUD" be the correct term?) design, though. Looks really bland to me.

I'm starting to wonder what the appeal of TLOU is? Nobody seems to ever say this, but without the characters, wouldn't that also be seen as a generic zombie apocalypse game? But people are clamoring all over each other (like Freakers outside a Walmart) for Part 2. Does no one want TLOU for its game? Or is it just the story. That seems like a major dichotomy to me. Surely those people can't be sick of this genre?

Anyway, a world that wants to dynamically kill you, is enough of an identity for this game. So I hope this is the case. It's intriguing that these "zombies" aren't actually dead, and what that could mean in regards to a possible cure.

Also, they have a 30 minute slot at E3 tomorrow (10am Pacific - 6pm in good old England...no one ever does here), so hopefully we'll get to see the alternate demo uninterrupted.

P.S
Someone please make a gif of Deacon's confused face, it's a winner.

Huds are usually a WIP this far.

Ah, good point. No release date in sight, so it must still be fairly early then.

The primary appeal was the world for me. It's really well done and very believable thanks to the numerous side stories they crafted via the artifacts (was that what they were called? the notes and whatnot) scattered throughout the world. The beautiful environments totally helped make it such an immersive experience too. And the music. The characters, their relationships, and the story itself contributed as well. The actual gameplay was fantastic, but nothing particularly special. Although, of course, it all worked so well together, which made scavenging for parts and crafting traps, weapons, etc. so much fun.

I'm hoping that Days Gone will have side stories too, whether it's in the form of side quests or through artifacts and the like. Or both. Post-apocalyptic (Horizon Zero Dawn being another example) settings just seem ripe for this kind of storytelling. Speaking of which, hmm, I never thought about side quests for Days Gone before. Sure hope there won't be much fetch quests. With that motorcycle, though... Oh well.

That alternate path video is awesome!! I thought it would just be about the player taking some other route, but those weather effects made it look like a different game...no wonder its taking a long time to develop. Looks like the game will have lot of replay-ability....or broken promises like No Man's sky?

This part looked pretty fantastic apart from the way the sun glares momentarily through the trees.

From last year's demos and screenshots which looked a bit sparse, I didn't expect it to be this thick and lush within the forest.

edit: sparse probably isn't the right word, more like an empty shell.

they need to release this footage, I dont want to say its better than what we saw but it sounds like it shows way more variety and of the world that being the machanics as well. Please release this soon, you grab way more attention with it

Im sure they will. We should be getting this gameplay footage and also Spider-Man alternate approach and the Uncharted: The Lost Legacy gameplay demo in the coming weeks.

Looks thoroughly unimpressive and bland - well not graphically.

It's kinda like Sony saw the success of TLOU and greenlit the first game that had the same sort of style.

If its a more survival, RPG based game that just killing hordes of zombies all the time, Im in. And from what Ive read and watched about the alternative footage, its looking like that.

Will be keeping up on the news on this one

The two directors for this seem like such nice guys though. Esp the bigger dude.

they really do. And its awesome to see how passionate about this project they are, John Garvin has been at Sony for 20 years, yet he still extremely excited and humble. Love their vibes
