A Gay, Mexican Teen Titan.

ivQTA.jpg

He's wearing pink, this is so you can tell that he is gay.

Read about this on Bleeding Cool the other day but just now got around to the reveal.

Name's Bunker and he'll be appearing in Teen Titans #3, powers unknown as of now.

“His real name is Miguel Jose Barragan. He was raised in a very small Mexican village called El Chilar. He was very loved by his family and the village as well — and they were as accepting of his homosexuality as they were to his super powers when they first manifested. To that end he grew up in an angst-free environment. He was born out of the closet and so he has a very refreshing outlook on life.”

“We wanted to show an interesting character [whose] homosexuality is part of him, not something that’s hidden. Sure they are gay people who you wouldn’t know are gay right off the bat, but there are others who are a more flamboyant, and we thought it would be nice to actually see them portrayed in comics. Did we go over the top, I don’t think so. I wanted you to know he might be gay as soon as you see him. Our TT is partly about diversity of ANY kind, [it's] about all kinds of teens getting together to help each other. It is a very difficult line to walk, will he be as I’ve read in some of the comments ‘fruity’? Not that I’m aware of. Will he be more effeminate than what we’ve seen before, the ‘typical’ gay male comic character, yes. Does it scare the shit out of me that I might inadvertently piss off the group I want to reflect in a positive way, you’re damn straight (pun intended!)”

Yeah, i dont know. I think he has a reason for the concern he presents (Brett Booth btw, co-creator) in the last bolded part. I get it that they want him to be this sorta pop-culture gay stereotype (wich im not saying its not real), but its a thin line to walk.

Also, its 2011, comics, i dont think there needs to be any sort of "proving" here.

Pretty ridiculous with the Miles Morales situation though, Marvel and DC competing for the "and suddenly: diversity" award.

How about just showing him as a non flamboyant average Joe, then in one scene have a crime interrupt his date with a man or whatever? Why you gotta do dis bullshit?

Because that would make too much sense and offend nobody.

because we don't see the flamboyant gay enough in TV and film.

Probably because they are amateur writers who think they might turn gay if they actually write a realistic gay character. You know, by accident.

So they just write them in a way it looks its supposed to be made fun off.

The following was what I first thought when this was shown in the other thread.

"If you didn't tell me he was gay I wouldn't have thought it. With the way most super heroes dress that outfit doesn't scream gay to me."

Just so everyone knows the writer (Scott Lobdell) is a hardcore republican who got into a fight with Ron Marz defending the Tea Party and has argued with Gail Simone because he believes this country should have the right to torture and water board pows.

Yeah i should have mentioned this

I agree it's a thin line to dance across, but there should be room for a whole spectrum of personalities with different sexual orientations.

I feel he doesn't need to be an average joe type. That seems to be the type everyone wants to make anyway to drill home the "he's gay but acts 'normal'!" point, but it should be fine to show other types too. Not everyone has to be "normal"!

Maybe he's flamboyant and he's into men that aren't. Then he can get into a relationship with a average joe superhero, and it'll be win-win, right? >_>

I hope they don't super screw this up.

well, at least i like the take on him never having issues for being gay, parents being accepting and all. I was ready for the typical shit.

Didn't Marvel already beat them to the punch when they had a gay couple in one of those teen based groups?

We have Anole and Greymalkin

Shatterstar and Rictor (though bisexual may be more apt here)

and then Ultimate Colossus

And Northstar but hes pretty stereotypical snarky bitch gay. Was Dakken ever confirmed as being bisexual/gay? Or does he just use people for his own amusement?

I can sort of understand the need to do things like this. Superhero comics are not a very healthy medium right now. Books are expensive relative to the content, the distribution model is kinda dumb and there is no real character progression. Most major story arcs just make the universe that much more ridiculous and unbelievable and then are rebooted. There's way too much focus on death and resurrection as well. The only way to freshen things up without screwing up their copyrights for potential movies is to add new characters or continue to do these ridiculous universe changing plot arcs.

The thing with adding new characters is that there are already so many white male superheroes and the point is to attract new audience to the books.

That being said, some of these new characters are ridiculous.

Oh that's nice. Gays are rarely portrayed as absurdly flamboyant, it's nice to see somebody breaking the mold.

I think Colossus in Ultimate X-Men was a perfect illustration of a gay character.

Actually in comics, you're right. I'm actually happy that this very real type is being featured for once. So far in comics, most heroes are a kind of nebulous regular guy that happens to like men! Which I can relate to since that would describe me, but there are no heroes for those gay guys that are a bit less masculine. There's no reason to be ashamed of who you are, and maybe this can be a great thing. Apollo and Midnighter, Obsidian, Hulkling and Wiccan are notable well written gay characters in my opinion, and some complained that Hulkling has earrings, saying that this reinforced stereotypes, as if there are no gay men with earrings. :lol

I was ready to hate Lobdell but so far he knocked it out the park with his Superboy #1. The ball is in his court now to do this justice. Proof is in the pudding.

And btw not sure this is a reaction to Miles, as Bunker (then known as The Wall) was known since SDCC. They didn't mention the gay thing, but the costume was the same.

that sucks. its hard to enjoy Ethan Van Sciver stuff after reading his FB/etc, kinda prefer to stay ignorant of writers/artists political stances where i can now. if it's not in their works, i feel like i don't always need to know.

Meh Chuck Dixon is pretty right winged, but he's dine some excellent work on Robin and Birds of Prey, etc. He'll, Gail is working pretty close with Ethan on Firestorm, and creatively they get along fine.

Yeah, reading in this thread it does seem that it is far from the norm. It's nice to get a good variety in representation, and it seems that this character is a step in this direction. Popular culture as a whole has had a bit less of an even skew on how gays have been represented, leaving me a bit bitter on the subject, but it's nice to hear that comics are being surprisingly progressive concerning the subject.

Good stuff!

shit, that was the same character? ha

maybe they still made him gay as a reaction, or who knows really, just another funny parallel if anything

and yeah: i dont disagree with you, but like i said in OP its a really thin line to walk. We'll see. At least they seem to know whats at stake.
