Dear GAF, buy Sonic Generations. ...no seriously.

This thread gets my approval.

After like 13 years of fumbles or just plain crap, Sonic Team's finally made a great game (I'd say Colors was just good). From the gameplay to the soundtrack, they really put a lot of effort in this one. Nice to see a lot of people taking notice, especially here.

Only thing that worries me now is that they'll think we're completely satisfied now, and stop trying as hard next time. There still is room for improvement afterall (rolling physics).

Because the modern levels are actually beyond good this time? I didn't buy it for modern sonic either but I'm playing them more than the classic levels. They were a complete struggle in the past new gen Sonics but play like a dream in generations. I won't lie you still get your cheap deaths here and there but the game is good enough this time to the point where the deaths are bearable and actually make you think of other ways to pass those points.

The classic Sonic stages in generations are generally easier than the genesis classic games, so if you didn't like them cause they were too hard you might.
 
Ok, so I played a bit more today....

Man, I'm absolutely loving it. It hits those old Sonic notes (for me) so well. I haven't really enjoyed a Sonic game at all since Sonic Adventure 1 for Dreamcast, but this. The Act 1 stuff is well done, and the Act 2 stuff while not great is also growing on me. It feels like it's what Sonic Adventure should have become. Very, very pleased with the package.

i got into this big, long thing in the generations OT about how sonic fans shouldn't be recommending games like sa2 and unleashed to non-sonic fans. i don't think it sank in at all. anybody who told you to buy unleashed or sonic 4 is an idiot
 
I suppose I should post in this thread because it made me buy it for PC from amazon for $25...

I haven't played enough to really comment on gameplay, but the game looks absolutely gorgeous, really what your kid self expected a "next-gen" Sonic to look like. The game is definitely not friendly to keyboard controls on the PC, though.

The casino night pinball music puts them all to shame, and is easily the best thing to come out of this game.

Btw as of 1.0.2 the asstasstic framerate drops are still in the pc version.
 
A lot of fun, but I rented and finished it in 2 days. Could of been one if not for work. All in all a lot of fun with decent replay value but the problem is the extras should of been in the form of follow up acts for each of the worlds specifically the 3D levels. I'm not that interested in beating all the gates but some of the 3D levels were the highlight.

Honestly if I had to choose between Sonic Unleashed day levels and this entire game's 3D levels I would choose Sonic Unleashed (even with the god awful werehog stages). Just look at Roof top Run, it is the best 3D level in Generations easily. I wish the Unleashed day stages were just added in there like Savannah Citadel, Dragon Road, Arid Sands, Skyscraper Scamper, and Jungle Joyride Acts. All quality and the sheer amount of content beats Generations.

Honestly I rushed through the 2D old Sonic levels and while this is the best, most fluid well-paced Sonic console game in years, it fell short once again based on its premise.

I still just want a full game of Sonic Unleashed style Day levels. That's it, no gimmick, no time-travel (per se), and no friends.

So I say no, don't buy it. Redbox it. Maybe if you love it enough buy it for full retail but I can't see paying retail for this game as good of an attempt as it is.
 
The Classic stages in this are pretty sweet. Modern stages are largely forgettable, though. Which is the exact opposite of what I was hoping for, unfortunately.
 
Just wondering, did Sonic Unleashed receive a greatest hits on the PS3? Sorry for the OT but I'm checking out for a cheap copy of the game.
 
People seem to be overhyping this game a little too much...

Renting Sonic Generations next week after I send Arkham City back, buying Rayman Origins. Like the Highlander, THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE platformer of the year, and an average nostalgia-fest isn't going to cut it against the 60fps 1080p 4 player co-op 2d art content perfection. Especially since they'll be wheeling out Sonic games every year until the world ends regardless.
 
Yeah may pick it up on Steam one day. Pity WU fucking my install and I haven't been bothered to flatten/reinstall yet.
 
The core mechanic of the classic sonic games (rolling into a ball when going downhill to gain momentum) is absent in Sonic Generations. The games look similar, but the changes to the physics change the way the game is played.

For people turned off by the physics changes, check out Sonic Fan Remix, as it is very close to the genesis physics and looks amazing.

After you beat it once you can change the music to any of the 50 unlockable pieces covering pretty much every game in the series. All my stages are basically set to songs for either sonic CD or one of the sonic riders now. The sonic unleashed and sonic and knuckles levels have some pretty kickass music though. I love how they are remixed differently for the classic and modern sonics, while both are still remixes of the original.

I have the CE and it includes a gold ring that is numbered. Mine says 4670/12000, so it looks like they are pretty limited.
 
Well I AM a crazy Sonic fan and I'm saying GAF should buy Sonic Generations for all the reasons in the OP.

Loving the shit out of the PC version on Steam.

I love all of the Sonic games in the mainline franchise (save for 06) and I am being completely serious when I say this is my favorite game in the franchise.
 
I don't really consider myself a Sonic fan. This and Sonic and the Secret Rings are the only sonic games I actually liked since the classic days, with generations being the better of the two by far. First one I'd recommend to anyone, and not just to sonic fans, since Sonic CD.

Both unleashed and colors were really close to being that game, but fell short. Obviously unleashed had that warehog problem. Colors was just way to full of run really long fast segments where you barely have to do anything but hold forward or boring wisp puzzle elements, which slowed down the gameplay way to much for no good reason at all. I don't see why people think those puzzles a five year old could solve were fun and worth slowing down for. It really killed the replayability which absolutely key for a sonic game. When Generations has sonic slow down, its for classic platforming action which is how it always should have been. Colors was absolutely gorgeous, but that gameplay had some problems.

Even if you didn't like Unleashed or Colors I'd say definitely this game if you are craving a platformer. Your only other choice so far this year is Kirby and Nintendo really phoned it in for this years Wii and DS version. They aren't really bad games, just kind of bland and ok compared to how good and exciting generations is. Rayman looks ok too, but that looks like they are chasing NSMBW while Generations is doing its own thing.

Somebody, tell me, in the HUB world when you zoom out, does the framerate get all wanked up for you as well? The game runs at a smooth 60fps constantly at a resolution of 2560x1600. Except when I zoom out in the HUB, the framerate goes down to 20 or something. It's awkward, albeit it not exactly cumbersome as I rarely use it. :P
 
I played the demo and don't understand it. All I do is roll to the right at a faster than comprehendible speed. If ever I get hit or take damage, it's because I couldn't see it coming.

The Sonic games have always seemed terrible to me. There's no sense of direction and the level design feels erratic.

The modern level was a bit better, but it basically felt like one long QTE event.

GHZ is a pretty bad level in both formats. Other classic levels ratchet the potential to maintain top speed over distance down, and other modern levels have branching routes all over the place.

Chemical plant is pretty good at alternate routes
 
I have a soft spot for the first Sonic Adventure, despite how obviously flawed and at times broken, it is. But this is the first Sonic game since 1994 that I can honestly recommend. It's not perfect, but it's a really good platformer.

Ehhh.

One of the worst things the Sonic community can do is overhype small victories the games have as massive ones.

Crisis City is, at it's best, competent. At it's worst, it's full of bad platforming scripting and wonky enemy hitboxes combined with an aesthetic that only serves to remind you of the lowest, incredibly recent, point in the series. And also makes very little sense story-wise. "Oh yay, we restored this city to being a post-apocalyptic wasteland where everyone is dying! WE'RE SO AWESOME."

To be fair, it's the most interesting level from that awful game. But yeah, still fucked up. Makes even less sense that since Crisis City in 06 was prevented in the future it came from anyways. Hahahaha.


Also, Crisis City Act 1 was cool, just not Act 2.
 
Didn't like Crisis City. If I were to mention my favorites (for each generation), I'd pick Greenhill Zone, Speed Highway (though I like City Escape too), and Rooftop Run.

No, the classic section was kind of cool but the modern version was awful. That, Perfect Chaos and the final boss are truly terrible moments that bog the game down.

I thought they were fine to good until Egg Dragoon and the terrible, TERRIBLE final boss.

Edit: So I guess I liked one, tolerated another, and hated the rest.
