Dear GAF, buy Sonic Generations. ...no seriously.

Why don't you explain what you think is wrong with it?

I've been playing through the challenges since my last post and I've gotta say it's not anywhere near as short as I made it out to be, just don't dismiss the challenges; they're actually pretty fun. Anyways, I'm going for 100% completion because the game is fun enough for that.
That's fine. I didn't find the challenges to be any fun. The rival stuff is good though, so more of that would have been welcome. Also, a good chunk of the levels (especially the last 3) were just plain badly designed, and should not have been included or replaced. Didn't like the flow of them at all.

It's a damn good game. At least give it a rent. Also, the "5 hours" of gameplay doesn't sound right to me. I've put way more than that into the game already and I've only collected about 1/3th of the red star rings and about half of the challenge stages.

Can I buy the american Sonic Generations on amazon.com and register it on european Steam?
If I can, then I would say it is totally worth it.

Gotta love the price difference.
30 Euro = 272 Swedish Kronor
30 US dollars = 197 Swedish Kronor

....Fuck you Steam, seriously.

Oh well, for 167 Kronor, I might as well take the chance. If it doesnt work, some lucky GAFer can have it.

Edit: Cant buy on american Amazon.
Game Downloads are only available to US customers

I really regret buying Uncharted 3 over Generations. I could trade it in next week but i'd rather support good Sonic games. So i'll trade it in for ES5 and get generations down the line.

Already bought it for £13 ish from GMG, and finding it well worth that.

The Modern stages still frustrate me slightly, but as each level (classic and modern) have so many paths, look so damn good at 1920 x 1080 and it really is smooth too.

It's the best Sonic game I have played since the Mega Drive and I thank Sega for finally putting a Sonic game on PC, especially at its budget pricing.

I loved the 3d of Sonic Adventure 2.
I am sad for anyone that despised it with a passion.

That is all I have to say. Looking forward to this game.

Go sell your hopefully like new copy of Uncharted 3 on eBay or Amazon for around the same price as you bought it. Don't trade it in, that's a waste of money.

Yes, there are big drops in Chemical Plant, but it also stays below 60 in lots of other places. Seaside Hill in particular, it dropped down to 33 at one point, and hovered around 45-50 for quite a lot of the area. I feel like my computer shouldn't really be struggling by any means with the game, and yeah yours shouldn't be either.

The result is that it's made me feel kind of ill on occasion because I'm really sensitive to inconsistent framerates. It's very regrettable.

Can you post what your setup is by any chance? I can't add anything since I haven't had a chance to finish downloading it to my PC yet but when people talk about PC ports it's pretty important to know what kind of setups everyone is running.

Is there a demo for the PC version? There doesn't seem to be one at steam.
There is no demo.

I've been mostly bitter and jaded about the shit Sega's done to the Blue Blur post-S3&K, but Generations was a very, very good game. Is it perfect? No. The controls aren't quite as tight as I'd like them to be, and some of the levels are a bit eh, but overall it's probably the best Sonic game in 17 years (excluding Colours, since I haven't played that one).

Edit: PC version is the way to go brah

The criticisms I have of the game center mainly on the full campaign, even with the optional challenge gates, is really short. Like, six hours or less short. At $30, I don't feel too burned. At $60, I probably would.

There's also the fact that this game is pretty clearly rushed. The lead up to the last boss is simply...jumping past the center parts of gears. The last boss himself is an audio/visual/gameplay mess that basically encapsulates everything terrible about modern Sonic at once. Planet Wisp dragged on forever and one world per game was clearly a time-saving measure considering how much thematic overlap there is. This was a game that needed to launch next summer or next winter, but as the generational (hehe) transition starts, Sega likely wanted the game out now.

All that considered, the game is still really fun. Like, I enjoyed it a lot. The platforming has some baffling lows, but also so dizzying highs. As shitty as the Sonic Colors stage was (despite having literally no reason to be besides padding), some other stages hit the nostalgia buttons just right while marrying them to modern standards for fun and excitement.

Honestly, had this game been given the actual time it deserves and was properly finished, there would be no question that this would be Sonic's "Mario Galaxy" moment. As it stands, it's just a fun game most of the time.

I'm convinced there must be something wrong with my PS3 or something, because the input lag made this game's demo pretty much unplayable for me, yet I haven't seen anyone else mention it.

Maybe I'll try the 360 demo.

Scoping at another forum, anything better then a phenom II/core2quad with a 550ti will max the game. some people are reporting trouble with anti aliasing on though

You may not be able to DL it via amazon but i'd be willing to bet you'd be able to register on steam. However, if it's not letting you buy on us amazon, that's a whole different story.

I caught the Quick Look for this on Giant Bomb and it might've just been them giving a bad chunk of the game but what I got out of that was a Chao being annoying and telling you with text on screen how to do everything, the boss fights looked janky, and they showed this modern Sonic stage that involved constantly hearing a metal detector beep while trying to find Knuckles buried and collecting coins from him.

Omochao can be turned off before you even start the game, and the game is better off for it.

Not sure which boss fight they showed, so I can't comment.

Optional mission you don't have to play to beat the game. You only have to play 1 out of 10 missions per each stage (either act) to move on, and some of the missions are as simple as "race a time trial ghost." You don't have to touch the friends stuff if you don't want to, as long as you're not going for every single bonus skill or every achievement.

Sorry OP, but no. Sega were dumb enough to release a demo, and that gave me every reason to skip this game.

I have to say though, the classic Sonic design is the best thing Sega has done in a very long time and he deserves a better game to be in. If they make an honest attempt at creating a sequel to the Genesis games, with no thought whatsoever to cater to modern fans, I'll be there day one.

I don't think that's gonna happen... ever.

I got the game off gmg for $17 bucks, 60fps@1080p and it's FUN to play, what more you want?

I played the demo and watched the quick look and I wasn't convinced. The classic levels were too horizontally spaced out and encouraged "just hold right" far too often. The 2D stages felt like 3D sonic regulated to the side perspective.

By a weird twist, the sidescroller sections of the modern sonic stages look to be closer to the level design of the actual classic sonic games (especially compared to the game's "classic" stage level design).

I don't care to play "classic" sonic gameplay with "modern" sonic design decisions. I don't care to experience 40seconds of actual classic gameplay embedded in modern sonic gameplay. I don't care experience yet another sonic game that the fans claim "this one is actually pretty good". I'm still recovering from unleashed. I didn't enjoy any of the demo of generations.

I'll just skip this one.

*I also seem to remember despising the double jump mechanic. I don't exactly remember what happens, though, as it's been a while since I played the demo.

I'm waiting until it's like £20 online. Doesn't take that long usually, and in the mean-time I've got Skyrim and Skyward Sword. Actually started playing S3&K again, so apparently I want moar Sonics.

Woaahh

Sonic Colors was great and this game also blows me away. They pretty much nailed the classic Sonic physics and modern Sonic feels about as good as Colors perhaps a bit more stable and less twitchy. Again, such an awesome game. I was playing Sky Sanctuary Act 1 just now, wow.

The 1080/60fps PC version is godly on my IPS monitor. Yeah Sonic fuck yeah yeah yeah

I'll bite at £17.99. The game does indeed seem to be good but other titles just have priority.

I rented it for $2 from Redbox and beat the majority of it. While I loved the game for the most part, I wouldn't spend $60 on it. I like how the challenges threw in a few new levels, but some of the acts were just cheap. And the last act as modern sonic took me 10 minutes to beat. That should never happen.

The critical path of the game is around 5 hours or less providing you aren't shit at the game but it'll take a lot longer to get all the red star rings and finish all the challenges and bosses on hard.

Game is crazy good though if you like Sonic. If you enjoyed Colours you'll love this and if you like classic Sonic but not so much recent games I'd still recommend giving this a go. Best modern Sonic gameplay ever. Looks like Sega have finally figured out how he should control in 3D.

Also, people complaining about price: Get it on the PC if you can run it. Not only is it cheaper (like all console ports should be) it also runs at a higher frame rate (again, like all console ports should) and looks amazing.

I bought the game yesterday on PC and I'm pleasantly surprised. It's also a very good PC port. It's baffling how many multiplatform games keeps getting delayed on PC or the developer completely forgets how to do PC-specific stuff, but this port is timely and good. I like that it's easy to swap between and configure just about any type of controller you can think of.

And the music is just absolutely amazing. I love all the transitions in the main hub. It reminds me of how LucasArts utilized imuse in Woodtick in Monkey Island 2. I thought I'd never hear music like that again.

I've already got Kirby Mass Attack and Kirby's Return to Dreamland to get through right now.
With Super Mario 3D Land and Rayman Origins coming out as well, I think this is the platformer that can't make the cut.

But, there's no double jump in this game...

I found the 2D section virtually unplayable in the latest demo, due to the needlessly jacked up speed, cluttered up and messily busy backgrounds, and sonic being way too close to the right side of the screen, giving me no time to react. Probably one of the most immediately un-fun things I've played this year.

3D Sonic level was pretty decent.

But yeah, a big, "No thanks" to me overall.

I had the same issue, but you'd be surprised how much a bump to 60FPS helps.

The PC version does.

If that's an option for you, I definitely recommend it over the console version.

Not really, unfortunately. I only have a laptop, and it's not built for gaming in the least.

Nothing happens when you jump while in the air? It's been so long since I played this that the particular issue I had with the controls might be escaping me.

I seem to remember that it was something related to the shield jumping style mechanic but the more I think back to specifics of a demo that left me thoroughly unimpressed the more I realize that the demo really didn't leave a large impression on me.

Just got done playing for about an hour. Pretty easy so far, but I'm guessing these challenge stages will help with that. Runs at 60FPS maxed out at 1080p on my PC without any slowdown that I've been able to notice.

One thing: I'm actually having fun right now. I can't say that about pretty much any other Sonic game I've played in the last 10 years or so. It's flawed fun, but still pretty fun. And graphically it's a pretty damn impressive game. The colors pop, it's fast, and smooth. We'll see where it goes from here but my first impressions are positive.

Game runs at 60fps for me most of the time, only slowdown is really on chemical plant for some reason, otherwise it's pretty well optimized.

Amazing game even if classic sonic is still not perfect, modern sonic is good fun for speed runs.

My 2 cents :

I don't want to play the EXACT Game as before .
why would i want the exact Green hill zone from the genesis area ?Can't i just play the original GHZ instead ? And that's why i don't understand some people complaining here ..Do you want to play the exact same levels , over and over again ? i sure don't . i want differences ..Something new even when they reuse the themes.

Raw gameplay has problems ( BUT IT CAN BE TWEAKED ) something like an hability to stop when you want is a huge plus for everyone who has different tastes .. i don't play sonic like my nephew and i know that everyone has his unique view on sonic but still . Would you have been ok if they just copy pasted the same thing ( level ) and be done with it ?

Do i see complains when mario kart give you the same layout for tracks but change the gameplay so that even then they play differently ? No.

From the start they said that they were going to reimagine the stages.. It's a very good patchwork.. I see complains from sone genuine fans ( or so they think ) that are so good at level and game design that even when sega adresses LOTS of complains ..they still complain

Congratulations .. Feel free to ignore everything that is not Exactly as you imagined ..i bet you play a lot of perfect games over the year ..

Do i have complains about sonic generations : YES
Do i think it's a pretty great game : YES

-NO playable friends
-Configurable gameplay
-No hub filled with humans with nothing usufull, simple gameplay stage selection
-lots lots of configuration ( music & skill )
-engine is stable and good
-lenghty for a sonic game
-no "boosting" the entire stage with modern sonic
-Sonic 1 medadrive included
-lot of replay value
-cutscenes are short
-extra challenges

BUt yeah "it's a bad game i will never buy this it's awfull , ect ect".
Congratulation you 3.

I played the demo on PS3 and the 30fps was tough on the eyes for classic Sonic, it didn't feel smooth at all.

Wonder if there's a PC demo I could try for 60fps.
