- Light killing fake L that appeared on TV which only appeared locally so now L discovered where Kira was. How did Light, as smart and intelligent as he is, did he think it would be THAT easy to be rid of the greatest detective in the world? This was Light's 2nd biggest mistake.

This right here is the moment you have to get Light is psychopath. L for sure got that clear, he not only figured out his location and the basics of his method of killing but also he got a glimpse at what kind of person Kira was.

What I love about Death Note is how easily it is to sympathize with Light at the beginning. You have this magic thing that can kill anyone, how would you not use it to kill the "bad" people of the world? seems such an obvious thing to do, then Light's character slowly devolves into this deranged psycho and we see it for what he is, he never showed any remorse when killing innocent people. This is the first instance of someone "innocent" dying, the author drops that fake L was some murderer who was sentenced to death anyway, but this is just to ease us into his death and not put Light's sociopathy that much in the open, but then there are several instances we see the kind of person Light really is.

I get people rooting for him at the beginning, I don't get people rooting for him at the end when we have seen the kind of world he was building and the kind of person he was.

I had thought I remembered Light staying fairly "good" far longer, but last night I rewatched the first few episodes. He kills Ray Penber in just episode 4. For me, that was when he really crosses the line.

I'm in the camp that thought the manga ending was much better than what the anime came up with. The anime seemed to want the audience to sympathize with Light more, while the manga was very appropriately chaotic and allowed us to see Light completely break. Also, what was, in my mind, the big reveal of the story was completely skipped by the anime, which makes the ending much less interesting.

In the manga, right before Light dies you see a glimpse into the past during Ryuk and Light's first conversation. It reveals that very early on, Light figured out that there were no consequences to using the death note (like the whole heaven or hell thing), and that death was equal. Obviously this doesn't make Light a better person, but I think this revelations makes it really interesting to look back and think about how Light could have justified all the stuff he did in his head, and it gives you an interesting new way of framing the story.

I watched the first episode yesterday and Light comes off as a crazy and delusional by the end of it, wanting to be a god and kill evil people. That's great but... you're really stupid to think you can actually make that a reality, like a toddler unaware of pretty much everything.

You're gonna use wikipedia for this shit and just start jotting down names? You're crazy.

So when exactly do episodes get shitty?
After L dies
?

I'm getting the impression that people in this thread who hate the second part of the series have a profound misunderstanding of Light's character. 2 things in particular really.

1) Light is very clearly deranged from his earliest depictions. How are there people who don't see this? His exchange with Ryuk about what happens if you kill all evil people should have made that clear.

2) Light got way luckier than Near ever did in part 1. People shitting on the finale because of the factor fate played in it are missing how prevalent it has been since the start. Remember, his victory over L completely hinged on Rem falling in love with Misa, something he could not have possibly accounted for.

I understand the Near hate, but I liked how he was basically half of L the same way Mello was. He was intelligent sure, but he didn't have his boldness or willingness to play dirty. When Light pointed out the folly of him trying to win "honourably" I got chills (English dub was incredible btw).

Just watched episode 7 again. His conversation with Naomi, especially the very end, is just bone-chilling. I still like Light as a character, but damn he was cold-blooded.

He was practically getting off at the fact that he pulled it off. There was no reason for him to ask her if she wanted to go to the police after he wrote her name down other than to be a smug asshole.

No, he accounted for that. That's exactly how he came up with the plan relinquish the Death Note to begin with.

Ya, no, you're missing what I'm saying here. Rem falling in love with Misa was a complete fluke. These Shinagami see hundreds of thousands of humans live and die, and this one just happens to fall in love with the one human that could help Light win? Come on, even you can't pretend that's somehow something Light engineered.

Light was never a monster, he was boring as hell. During the memory loss arc he basically has no personality, he's a handsome bored guy who just happens to be very smart. This is why he's a well written character: he represents an average person, and an average person can't properly control such a powerful device. Ryuk even says that the Death Note is a curse. I really liked the anime ending because it made us pity Light, he was corrupted by a power that no one can control.

It was a complete fluke, but Light already knew Rem would do anything for Misa. When Light threaten to kill her with the Death Note, Rem threatened Light back. That there, Light realize Rem would do anything for Misa, even if it means killing herself to protect Misa. That's how he was able to use that to his advantage. when they get the Death Note back, he had a backup plan in case Misa forgot L's real name.
