Debate Thread: Why is Valve making L4D2 instead of continuing L4D1 DLC?

Someone should start a counter-campaign where members pledge to purchase two copies of the game and gift one of them at launch. It'd be great if that list outnumbered the boycotters.
do you support every publisher who pushes out yearly releases like this? valve is great, but acting like activision/EA sucks nomatter who it is.

I buy games I find worth buying, I care very little about their release schedules. I definitely do not buy games as an "investment", so while free content is nice and all it's not essential.

It quite likely sold just as well on PC
No doubt, but this is also the first valve game that really picked up steam on consoles. Personally I was surprised, since I did not think the game lent itself to a controller very well at all. What I'm sayin is that with L4D, though obviously still available on pc, Valve will be putting a higher priority on the console experience than they have with their past titles. Every bit of orange box was a PC game that - "oh by the way..." - ran on a 360.

And i think that's fine. It's not like valve is gonna forsake PC gaming, so if they want to leverage one of their franchises into the console space as well, I certainly wouldn't harbor any grudges. It'd be pretty smart on their part.

I thought that petition was dumb, but cut out the parts of my earlier post that said as much, since this was a different thread.

If the games are good, I really don't care if they take 1 year or 3 years to come out.

Valve has earned so many cool points with me that I'm happy to give them the benefit of the doubt in a case like this. Actually, I don't even need to give them the benefit of the doubt, because I'm perfectly happy with the level of content in the first game and the 130 or so hours I've gotten out of it. So I say bring on the sequel.

My only slight concern is the impact it might have in terms of splitting the community, but that won't keep me from buying the game day one.

That seems like a non-issue since this isn't really a competitively played game and playing it with strangers isn't fun.

That's not true. Playing with friends is definately better, but I've played with many strangers and had good experiences.

Yeah, like I said it's just a slight concern. As long as most people on my Friends list move over (which I'm sure they will), it won't impact me.

If this was add on and it was like 20 quid then I would be totally content with spending that, but 40 quid (or pounds for whose who do not know what quid means) is steeeep.

Gonna wait for a sale.

i already know some of my friends will get it and others won't.

some were expecting valve to act like valve and support their product heavily. others don't care.

both opinions are valid and neither opinion is worth bashing and slining mud at (that locked thread about 10k boycotters was pathetic, GAF).

im not the biggest fan of the game anyway but i certainly wont pay over £10 for it, may never get it if the mod content for the 1st one is good enough

L4D1 is a broken game. Corner turtling, toteming in corners, unlimited ultra-fists. Adding these new maps with the gauntlets and updated events structure that fixes these problems would make the original maps seem even more broken and they wouldn't get played anyway.

I could see this being an expansion deal only if they repair all of the first game's maps so the crescendo events aren't in static positions anymore. As it is, everyone just totems in a corner and is invincible.

Yes because clearly Valve intends to release Left 4 Dead 3 next year.

Oh.

Wait.

That boycott is the most hilarious thing to come out of this announcement. Even more hilarious than the people bitching about paying for a glorified beta.

It is simply impossible to play any multiplayer game without a mic.

I wouldn't say that's true in terms of "any" multiplayer game. I generally wear a headset when I play TF2 and stuff but it's extremely rare I ever actually say anything to anyone and primarily the only game-relevant chatter you hear is along the lines of "Spy's Demo." Once in a blue moon you might hear a Medic coordinate with his Heavy for an Uber.

Left4Dead, though, I would say yeah - headset is a must. It's a much more personal game that requires a great deal of coordination between you and your teammates. By its very nature you start calling out ammo, enemies, etc. You might be able to skim by on just using the voice presets, but yeah, voice chat in Left4Dead makes things a lot easier.

Oh, but it's fun Sciz. It's fun!

:lol

I can't even remember the last time I used a mic in L4D.

I don't have any issue with Valve releasing this game so soon. So Valve didn't make another Counter-Strike where the same people can play the same game on PC for 10 years. I bought L4D for 20 bucks anyway, on sale, a week after it came out--buying a second iteration will not be a bank-breaking investment.

People should be excited for this! More L4D is good in my book, even if I have to pay for it.

:lol @ the "boycott".

the l4d 'community' sucks. it's been a while since i've had a good experience with a random group. it's all about the GAF L4D crew (and occasional pub stomp) :D

im okay with yearly releases if theyre worth it. but this sounds more like an expansion than a new game.

so far the only thing that sparks my interest is that one of the voice overs is done by someone on The Wire.

Do your expansions always have more original content than the game they're expanding?

I just hate that L4D1 is being dropped in terms of support. I really wanted it to get more than just the survival pack and SDK. I'm in the "buying L4D2 when it's on sale" camp, I guess because so far a lot of the stuff really does look like it's just mods/reskins. Melee weapons are pretty underwhelming looking so far, fire ammo is good but not great, the new guns are the same as the old ones, but with new models. And the Charger seems pretty shitty considering the awful skills of the people playing it at E3.

I mean, I like the look of the campaigns and the look of the new survivors, but that's stuff the SDK could mod in.
