I'm an Atheist (but my family doesn't know), so I am still stuck going to (Catholic) church with them every Sunday. During the priest's sermon, he was talking about how people "want it all", and "take more than they give". Then he throws this winner of a quote out there:
"Our government certainly is doing more taking than giving. We are $14 trillion in debt and they want to raise the debt ceiling! If your kid is in debt, you should tear up their credit cards."
There is not a facepalm image in the world capable of describing this.

That's part of my personal problem with the whole thing. The way it was taught in my family was pretty much "This is something everyone just does. There are no other options or choices." Obviously, this is why I'm afraid to tell them the truth.subversus said:you know when I read something like this I wonder if all problems US facing last 10 years is due to some horrible social disease which isn't visible from outside and everybody inside tries to ignore. I mean religion sounds really perverted. It's just like some cult or another party you have to join. That's totally not what religion is about but if people percieve such state of things as right I wonder what's going on in their minds.

I guess you could say it's considered the norm, especially in the Catholic Church. It may also be partly where I live (Texas, right in the fucking Bible Belt). I agree that it is strange, and I really wish it was considered strange. My parents would probably never understand because they always wanted to raise Catholic children, etc. I have a friend in a similar situation as me, she hasn't told her family either, but one day she heard her sister tell her mother she didn't believe in God anymore and her mother threatened to kick her out of the house if she ever said anything like that again. Sadly this kind of thing is commonplace around here.subversus said:are they norm among religious people? I read a lot of posts on GAF like "I'm afraid to tell my parents that I don't believe in Jesus". That's always sounds strange because religion should be voluntarily. You can't fake faith to yourself and if there's no faith then what's the point?
edit: it's sounds almost as strict as some Iranian stuff.

How did this turn into a discussion on religion?

That was my fault for making that post about what the priest at my family's church said about the debt ceiling. I didn't intend to derail the thread.ReBurn said:Maybe they're leading by example and showing people how to compromise.

That sounds pretty awful and a-Biblical. I went to a campus youth ministry in college for a few years, and one of our number decided he was an atheist. It made us sad, but we didn't start hating him, or bombarding him with... I don't know, arguments. I'm sure he had a discussion with the youth leaders, but he still attended our end of the year get to together, where we said bye to all the graduating seniors, (including myself.) It was a little awkward, but we still had a nice time.Hylian7 said:I guess you could say it's considered the norm, especially in the Catholic Church. Then dump the blame on them. I'm not advocating default, but I would take them to task, even as much as going on TV and explaining exactly what they are doing. Sadly, I have the feeling that Obama will take what he can get within reason.
Where is LBJ when you need him? He would have had the tea party coming out announcing they are raising taxes.

They'd cower while talking to LBJ and then just run back and continue spouting the same bullshit on TV and on the senate/house floors.
MiDNiGHTS said:Not to mention he had large Democratic majorities in both chambers of Congress while Obama could be stopped by any one Senator at any time using the new filibuster that has made a 51 seat majority one that's more for show and 60 seats the real majority.
